Goldman Environmental Prize 2020

  • An indigenous leader from the Ecuadorean Amazon is one of the winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize, which recognises grassroots activism.
  • Nemonte Nenquimo was chosen for her success in protecting 500,000 acres of rainforest from oil extraction.
  • She and fellow members of the Waorani Indigenous Group took the Ecuadorean government to court over its plans to put their territory up for sale.
  • Their 2019 legal victory set a legal precedent for indigenous rights.
  • For Nemonte Nenquimo, protecting the environment was less a choice than a legacy she decided she had to carry on.
  • The Goldman Environmental Prize is a prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world's six geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. The award is given by the Goldman Environmental Foundation headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is also called the Green Nobel.

Indo-Japan Cooperation Wins OECD MAP 2019 Award

    • Indo-Japan cooperation has won the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mutual Agreement Procedure 2019 Award for highest agreement ratio for a pair of jurisdictions for transfer pricing cases.
    • The Award to India-Japan Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP) cooperation demonstrates India's commitment to provide tax certainty and efficacious dispute resolution mechanism for the Japanese companies.

Malayalam Film 'Jallikattu' is India's Official Oscar Entry

  • Malayalam film Jallikattu, directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, has been selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards. Jallikattu is the third Malayalam film after Guru (1997) and Adaminte Makan Abu (2011) to be chosen as the country's official entry for the Oscars.
  • The selection was made by a fourteen-member committee of the Film Federation of India, from a shortlist of 26 films.

Para-athlete among Indian Women on BBC's Top 100

  • Indian para-athlete and current para-badminton world champion Manasi Joshi and climate activist Ridhima Pandey are among four Indian women to be included in the BBC 100 Women 2020 list.
  • The list, which celebrates inspirational and influential women across the globe from high profile names to unsung heroes, also includes 82-year-old Bilkis Bano for leading a peaceful protest against the new citizenship law and Isaivani for breaking male domination in the field of Tamil Nadu's Gaana singing.
  • In a year of unprecedented turbulence, this year's theme is 'How Women Led Change in 2020'.
  • The worldwide list includes Sanna Marin, who leads Finland's all-female coalition government; Michelle Yeoh, star of the new Avatar and Marvel films; and Sarah Gilbert, who heads the Oxford University research into a coronavirus vaccine; as well as Jane Fonda, a climate activist and actress.
  • For the first time, this year's list will see the 100th spot left blank to honour all the women who made an impact and a sacrifice in this extraordinary year and allow our audiences to fill it with someone meaningful to them. 

Global Award for Pilibhit Tiger for Doubling Tiger Population

  • The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) and the Uttar Pradesh Forest department have bagged the first-ever international award, TX2, for doubling the number of tigers in four years against a target of 10 years.
  • PTR was the first to receive the award among 13 tiger range countries.
  • It achieved this goal in just four years from 2014, when it had 25 tigers which went up to 65 in 2018.
  • The award was virtually presented to the principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) of the state, Sunil Pandey, by UNDP's (United Nations Development Program) head of ecosystems and biodiversity, Mindori Paxton.

Vatayan Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' has been awarded the Vatayan Lifetime Achievement Award, on November 21, 2020.
  • The Vatayan award has been given to Pokhriyal for his excellent contribution to the literary works of India.
  • The Education Minister has been a recipient of many respected awards in the field of literature and administration including the Sahitya Bharati Award by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Sahitya Gaurav Samman by Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, among others.
  • The Vatayan International Awards are presented by the Vatayan-UK organisation in London to honour poets, writers, and artists for their works in the respective fields.
