Kisan Diwas

Every year, India observes Farmers' Day or Kisan Diwas on December 23. Farmers are the driving force of the country's economy and deserve to be honoured. The day also celebrates the birth of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh, who started as a farmer before earning his seat in the government. This day aims to promote awareness of the importance of farmers and their valuable contribution to the overall social- and economic development of the nation.
Chaudhary Charan Singh is a remarkable testimony to the fact that, despite having humble beginnings and living a plain lifestyle, one can go on to do great things. Kisan Diwas is celebrated on December 23 to honour the anniversary of this great man's birth.

National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 every year. This date marks the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. In 2012, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day to honour the life and achievements of Ramanujan.
He was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu in a humble Iyengar Brahmin family.
Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician and is considered one of the greatest Indian mathematicians of all time.
During his short but impactful lifespan, Ramanujan worked on theorems that seemed impossible to solve. He is known for the work he did in the areas of continued fractions, Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series and functional equations of the zeta function.
On May 2, 1918, he became a fellow of the Royal Society in London, one of youngest people to receive such an honour. Ramanujan died on April 26, 1920 at the age of 32.

International Human Solidarity Day

International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD) is observed annually on December 20 across the globe to celebrate the ideal of unity in diversity. IHSD highlights the goal of the United Nations and its member states to create awareness about poverty and the need to reduce poverty in independent nations. As part of the UN's Sustainable Development agenda, IHSD is promoted by the World Solidarity Fund and United Nations Development Programme.
As per the United Nations Millennium Declaration published on September 18, 2000, the word 'solidarity' was added to the UN as one of the fundamental values that are to be essential for international relations.
On December 20, 2002, the UN General Assembly introduced a World Solidarity Fund to help counter global poverty. This got included in the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) trust fund in February 2003. To commemorate the above day, the UN declared December 20 as International Human Solidarity Day.

Goa's Liberation Day

Goa Liberation Day is celebrated annually on December 19 to mark the anniversary of the state gaining independence from the Portuguese. Goa was liberated by Indian forces in 1961 after 450 years under Portuguese domination. In 1510, the Portuguese colonised a number of locations in India, but by the end of the 19th century, they had only succeeded in retaining colonies in Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, and Anjediva Island. Small-scale protests marked the beginning of the Goa Liberation Movement, which aimed to overthrow Portuguese colonial rule in the region. Goa Liberation Day also honours the state's accomplishments in the tourism industry as well as the fact that it has the highest per capita income of all Indian states and union territories.
Goa continued to be ruled by the Portuguese for 14 years after India achieved freedom in 1947. Goa's struggle for freedom gained confidence when India declared independence, sparking a number of protests and demonstrations. India, therefore, attempted to recover Goa through diplomatic means in a peaceful manner.
The Portuguese surrendered after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's then-Prime Minister, deployed armed forces. The 36-hour military action, code-named "Operation Vijay" meaning "Operation Victory," included strikes by the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Air Force. The coastal state was freed on December 19, 1961 and became a Union Territory of India.

International Migrants Day

Every year on December 18, the world marks International Migrants Day, a day set aside to recognize the important contribution of migrants while highlighting the challenges they face.
In 1997, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began celebrating and promoting December 18 as the International Day of Solidarity with Migrants. This date was chosen because it was on December 18, 1990 that the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
Building on this initiative, December 18 with support from Migrant Rights International and the Steering Committee for the Global Campaign for Ratification of the International Convention on Migrants' Rights and many other organizations – began late 1999 campaigning online for the official UN designation of an International Migrant's Day, which was finally proclaimed on December 4, 2000.
The United Nations proclamation of the International Migrants Day is an important step, offering a rallying point for all those concerned with the protection of migrants. The UN invited all UN member states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to observe this day by disseminating information on human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing experiences, and undertaking action to ensure the protection of migrants.
