Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) or Non-Resident Indian Day is observed by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The day is celebrated on January 9 to highlight the role of the Indian diaspora across the world and their contributions towards the country's progress. The celebration highlights the commitment of the Government of India to maintain and strengthen its ties with the overseas Indian community.
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed on January 9 because it is on this day in 1951 that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa. He contributed greatly to the cause of India's struggle for freedom against the British and came to be known as the "Father of the Nation."
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was established in the year 2000, but was first celebrated officially in 2003, in New Delhi. Initially, the day was celebrated annually till 2015, following which the event became a biennial.
  • A particular city is chosen, by The Ministry of External Affairs chooses a city to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations and for the year 2023, Indore was chosen to host the event, which will run from January 8 to 10.

World Day of War Orphans

  • The World Day of War Orphans is observed on January 6 every year. The day aims to raise awareness about children who have been orphaned due to wars. The objective of the day ensures to voice out the predicament of war orphans and highlight the emotional, social, and physical challenges children face while growing up.
  • The World Day of War Orphans was initiated by the French organization, SOS Enfants en Detresses. UNICEF estimates that there are nearly 9,00,000 children in the Northeast, all of whom have been seriously affected by the war, either through a lack of education, food, shelter, or direct injury.
  • The theme for World Day of War Orphans 2023 was "Standing Up for War-Affected Children".

  • In remembrance of the birth of Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille, January 4 is marked as World Braille Day. The day also recognizes that people with visual impairments should have the same access to human rights as everyone else.
  • The date for the event was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via a proclamation in November 2018. The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4, 2019.

Global Family Day

  • Observed every year on January 1, Global Family Day is celebrated to start the New Year with a message of peace and unity among people.
  • The idea was coined in November 1997 after people were inspired by a book titled 'One Day In Peace – January 1, 2000,' which was released by the United Nations. It was the same time when the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. Following this in 1999, UN members also received an invitation to formally celebrate the first day of the year as 'Global Family Day'.
