MoD Clears Acquisition Proposals Worth Rs. 13,165 crore

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) at a meeting accorded approval for procurement of 25 advanced light helicopters (ALH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under Buy Indian scheme.
  • The copters will cost Rs. 3,850 crore. The decision comes a day after an ageing Cheetah helicopter crashed near Patni Top in Jammu and Kashmir killing both pilots. The single-engine Cheetah helicopters are based on the 1950s' designed Alouette Aérospatiale 315B Lama of France and are produced by HAL. The ALH is twin-engine helicopter and is based on latest technologies.

France, Greece Sign Defence Agreement

  • France and Greece announced a multibillion euro defence deal, including Athens' decision to buy three French warships as part of a strategy to boost its defense capacities in the Eastern Mediterranean amid recurring tensions with longtime foe Turkey.
  • President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a defence and security strategic partnership in a joint news conference in Paris.
  • It will help protect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity of both states. Greece will purchase three French frigates to be built by defense contractor Naval Group in Lorient, in western France. The three-way strategic defense alliance announced by Australia, the UK and the US came as a shock to French officials.

DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight Test of Akash Prime Missile

  • A new version of the Akash missile was successfully flight-tested from the integrated test range at Chandipur in Odisha.
  • The missile —'Akash Prime' — intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target mimicking an enemy aircraft in its maiden flight test.
  • As per DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy, Akash Prime system will further boost the confidence of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force as the Akash system is already inducted and now getting improved with more lethal missiles.
  • The Akash Prime is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the DRDO and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
  • The Akash SAM was developed to replace the Russian 2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful) missile system, currently in service.

Czech Republic Buys Israeli Spyder Air-Defense Weapon

  • The Czech Ministry of Defence has signed a deal to acquire the Spyder surface-to-air missile systems made by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The contract is worth 13.69 billion koruna (US$627 million.
  • As per Czech Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar, the purchase would enable Prague to replace its outdated, Soviet-designed 2K12 Kub surface-to-air systems with modern military technology.
  • Under the contract, the Czech defense industry will take part in the program, supplying products and services worth more than 30 percent of its value.

India, Oman Ink Pact to Boost Maritime Security Cooperation

  • India and Oman inked an agreement for exchange of white shipping information and to boost maritime security cooperation in reflection of growing cooperation between the two sides. The pact was signed by Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and his Omani counterpart Admiral Saif bin Nasser bin Mohsen Al-Rahbi in Muscat.
  • The Indian Navy cooperates with the Royal Navy of Oman on many fronts that include operational interactions and training.
  • Both navies have been participating in the biennial maritime exercise Naseem Al Bahr since 1993. This exercise was last conducted in 2020 off Goa and the next edition is scheduled in 2022.

Pakistan, China Launch Joint Anti-terror Exercise

  • Troops from China and Pakistan launched a joint anti-terror exercise as part of SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS).
  • The opening ceremony of the Joint Anti-Terrorist Exercise (JATE)-2021 was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Pabbi in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
  • JATE was conducted with a view to practice and master various drills and procedures involved in Counter Terrorism operations including Cordon & Search, Compound Clearance, Close Quarter Battle and medical evacuation.
  • The exercise is aimed at enhancing synergy and interoperability among Special Services and Law Enforcement Agencies of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries for combating international terrorism, practice mechanisms to respond to a crisis situation and capacity building of the forces.

Lt. Gen. Khanduri is Next Western Command Chief

  • Lieutenant General Nav K Khanduri was appointed as the next General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Chandimandir-based Western Command.
  • He is the first officer from the Army Air Defence to be elevated to the rank of Army Commander. Lt Gen Khanduri will take over from Lt. Gen. RP Singh who superannuates on October 31.
  • Earlier, Lt. Gen. Khanduri has served as the General Officer Commanding, 33 Corps in the north-east and as Director-General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Management, at Army Headquarters. Commissioned in December 1983, he is an alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College and the National Defence Academy.

Defence Ministry Places Order for 118 Arjun Mk-1A Tanks

  • The Defence Ministry sealed a contract to procure 118 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) Arjun for the Indian Army at a cost of Rs. 7,523 crore. The Defence Ministry placed the order for the Arjuna Mk-1A tanks with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, Chennai.
  • The MBT Mk-1A is a new variant of Arjun Tank designed to enhance fire power, mobility and survivability, infused with 72 new features and more indigenous content from the Mk-1 variant.
