Rajnath Singh Presents Gallantry and Meritorious service medals to Indian Coast Guard

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented gallantry and meritorious service medals to Indian Coast Guard personnel at the Investiture Ceremony held at National Stadium Complex in the national capital. Singh said that the Indian Coast Guard was started with 4-6 boats, and today, with more than 150 ships, and 66 aircraft, it holds an important place in the world's best maritime forces.

Estonia Buys Blue Spear Missiles for Coastal Defense

  • Estonia's military will receive the Blue Spear missile system to improve coastal defense under a new contract signed with Proteus Advanced Systems, a joint venture of Israel Aerospace Industries and ST Engineering Land Systems.
  • The contract was made through the Estonian Centre for Defence Investment, a military procurement organization set up by the country's Defence Ministry.
  • The deal is a result of a partnership established about two years ago to market the surface-to-surface missiles for coastal protection, either from land or sea, as a way to maximize each company's foothold in the sector. Development of the missile was announced in July 2020.

Discussions with US Underway on S-400 Missile Defence Deal

  • India said that discussions are going on with the US on the S-400 missile defence deal, a day after US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman expressed unease over New Delhi's procurement of the Russian weapons system.
  • Sherman said that any decision on possible sanctions on the S-400 deal will be made by President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
  • The issue of India procuring the S-400 missile system from Russia figured in Sherman's wide-ranging talks with Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and both sides hoped to find a way out on the issue through dialogue.
  • The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for the purchase of S-400 missile defences from Russia.

Lt Gen Anjum is New Pakistan ISI Chief, Replaces Lt Gen Hameed

  • In a surprise military shake-up, the Pakistan Army announced that the powerful spy agency ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed has been appointed as Peshawar Corps Commander, a crucial position in view of the Taliban's takeover of neighbouring Afghanistan.
  • Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum was appointed as the new Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in place of Lt Gen Hameed, who was transferred as Peshawar Corps Commander.
  • The ISI chief is appointed by the Prime Minister but as part of a tradition he executes this power in consultation with the Pakistan Army chief.
  • The post of ISI chief is considered one of the most important in the Pakistan Army, which has ruled the country for more than half of its 73 plus years of existence and has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

Jamwal Assumes Charge as ADG of BSF's Western Command

  • Narinder Singh Jamwal assumed charge as Additional Director General of Border Security Force's (BSF) Western Command, Chandigarh.
  • Prior to this, he was serving as Inspector General at BSF's Jammu Frontier.
  • BSF's Western Command is responsible for the peace time management of the border with Pakistan from Jammu and Kashmir in the north to Rann of Kutch in the south.
  • Jamwal had joined the BSF in 1984 as an Assistant Commandant (Direct Entry).
  • He has held important assignments both in command and staff, including a tenure in BSF Headquarters in New Delhi, and attended several training courses in India and abroad.

A.K. Chawla Inaugurates Naval Communication Network Satellite Data Centre

  • Vice Admiral A.K. Chawla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, inaugurated Naval Communication Network Satellite Data Centre, a state-of-the-art facility, at the INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti.
  • The Admiral said that the satellite data centre would provide a tremendous boost to the communication throughput of the Indian Navy.
  • This was was another milestone towards the seamless network-centric operations of the armed forces.

JIMEX: India, Japan 3-day Bilateral Maritime Exercise Held in Arabian Sea

  • The fifth edition of India-Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX, between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force, was held in Arabian Sea. Indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, under the command of Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, represented the Indian Navy in the three-day exercise. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force was represented by JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral IkeuchiIzuru, Commander Escort Flotila - 3 (CCF-3). In addition to ships, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integral helicopters and MiG 29K fighter aircraft also participated in the exercise.
  • The aim of JIMEX-21 was to develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations.
  • JIMEX series of exercises commenced in January 2012. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in September 2020.
