US Travel Predicts Turnaround in Second Quarter of 2021

  • The environment for travel will begin to change significantly in the second quarter of 2021, according to the latest projections from the U.S. Travel Association.
  • Adam Sacks, president and CEO of Tourism Economics said that with vaccination of a large segment of the population by the second quarter, "that sets the stage for a strong leisure travel summer." He also said that after Labor Day, business and group travel will begin to recover, although those markets will take longer to return to 2019 levels.

MSC Temporarily Pauses Mediterranean Cruises

  • MSC Cruises has announced that it will temporarily pause the operation of MSC Grandiosa later in December and move the planned restart of MSC Magnifica to January because of the severe restrictions put into place by the Italian government in order to curb COVID-19.
  • In its efforts to combat the pandemic ashore, Italy is nearly completely restricting the movement of residents between towns and cities between December 21, 2020, and January 6, 2021. The new decree has caused the cancellation of three future planned voyages of MSC Grandiosa and three sailings of MSC Magnifica.
  • MSC Grandiosa will temporarily pause sailing seven-night voyages on December 20, 2020, in Genoa, Italy. The ship will then resume Western Mediterranean cruises on January 10, 2021, also from Genoa.
  • MSC Magnifica was due to restart 10-night voyages in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean on December 18, 2020, from Genoa but will now begin sailing on January 15, 2021, following the cancellation of three previous sailings.
  • MSC Cruises has put into place a comprehensive health and safety protocol that has worked effectively, protecting its guests, crew and communities that the ships visit.

Tribals Turn Scenic Village into Tourism Destination

  • Tribals of Pedalabudu village, near Araku Valley, with the help of government agencies have set up an ecotourism village on three acres of land.
  • The Pedalabudu Ecotourism Society, comprising the Kondo Dora and Bagatha tribes have developed this new destination in Padalabudu village.
  • The Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Paderu, has provided Rs. 85 lakh for the project. The tribal villagers, whose lives mostly revolve around farms, markets and cultivation, are now looking to turn their village into a tourist destination.
  • The purpose of this facility is to provide accommodation for tourist in a peaceful environment close to nature. The 'Giri Grama Darshan' will be another attraction for tourist visiting the Araku Valley.

Odisha to Promote Homestay Tourism

  • The Odisha government on Monday decided to promote homestay facilities at nature trails and eco-tourist spots to attract tourists to remote areas of the state. At a high-level virtual meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary A K Tripathy, it was decided that homestays would be supported from the 2021-22 fiscal for a period of ten years.
  • Places like Diamond Triangle Buddhist Circuit (Ratnagiri Udayagiri Lalitgiri), Onkadelli in Koraput district, Khola, Gupti, Dangmala and Bhitarkanika national park in Kendrapara district, Daringibadi, Belghar in Kandhamal, and Simlipal, Pithabata, Jashipur in Mayurbhanj have been prioritised for development of homestay facilities in the first phase. The other locations include Tikarpada, Satakosia in Angul, Magalajodi, Chilika in Khurda district and Dhodrokusum, Zero point in Bargarh district.
  • Around 80 homestay providers at these places would be incentivised each year with financial support.
  • Each homestay unit can let out 1-6 rooms (up to 12 beds) to guests. The rooms must be located in the premises where the owner or his family members normally resides. The owner or his family should be directly involved in providing hospitality to the guests.
