India and Russia Joint Venture Starts Production of Kalashnikov AK-203

  • The Indo-Russian joint venture for the manufacturing of Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles is a testament to the strong partnership relations between the two countries. The move to manufacture these rifles in India through a joint venture not only lends greater firepower to the Indian armed forces but also serves as a significant step in strengthening military-technical cooperation between the two nations.
  • The Kalashnikov AK-203 is now being produced in India through a joint venture between Russia's Rosoboronexport and India's government-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) under the brand name "Kalashnikov India" in Korwa, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The facility has the capacity to produce 750,000 rifles per year.
  • The Kalashnikov AK-203 is a type of assault rifle that is designed and manufactured by the Kalashnikov Concern, a subsidiary of the Russian Rostec State Corporation. The AK-203 is part of the AK-200 series of rifles, which are based on the traditional AK-47 design but feature modernized and updated components.

Sri Lanka, US Conducts Joint Exercises to Maintain Free Indo-Pacific

  • Sri Lanka and the US is conducting a week-long joint military exercises to prepare for disaster relief and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, amid China's increasing military manoeuvring in the strategic region.
  • The US Navy and Marine Corps commenced exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT)/Marine Exercise (MAREX) Sri Lanka 2023 with the Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force in Colombo.
  • This is the fifth CARAT/MAREX exercise between the US and Sri Lanka, and this year includes participants from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Maldives National Defence Force.
  • CARAT/MAREX Sri Lanka is a bilateral exercise between Sri Lanka and the US designed to promote regional security cooperation, maintain and strengthen maritime partnerships, and enhance maritime interoperability.

Pankaj Kumar Singh Appointed Deputy NSA

  • Retired director general of the Border Security Force (BSF) Pankaj Kumar Singh was appointed as deputy national security adviser (NSA).
  • Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, was appointed on a re-employment contract for a period of two years.
  • Singh retired as BSF chief on December 31, 2022.
  • When Singh took charge of the BSF on August 31, 2021, he had created history of a son and a father holding the top post of a paramilitary force during their services.
  • His father and retired IPS officer of the 1959-batch, Prakash Singh, had also headed the BSF from June, 1993 to January, 1994.

The 21st Edition of Naval Exercise 'Varuna' between India and France Begins

  • The 21st edition of the bilateral naval exercise between India and France commenced on the western seaboard.
  • Initiated in 1993, the exercise was christened 'Varuna' in 2001 and has become a hallmark of IndiaFrance strategic bilateral relationship.
  • This edition of the exercise will witness participation of indigenous guided missile stealth destroyer INS Chennai, guided missile frigate INS Teg, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I and Dornier, integral helicopters and MiG29K fighter aircraft.
  • The French Navy is represented by the aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, frigates FS Forbin and Provence, support vessel FS Marne and maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique.
  • The exercise is being conducted over five days from January 16 to 20 and will witness advanced air defence exercises, tactical manoeuvres, surface firings, underway replenishment and other maritime operations.

Indian Army to Hold Mega Exercise with African Countries in March

  • The Indian Army will hold a mega multilateral exercise with militaries of around 40 African countries in March with an aim to significantly expand two-way military engagement.
  • In the last few years, India has been focusing on ramping up overall defence and strategic ties with the African continent amid China's growing attempts to expand its influence over the countries.

ICG Ship 'Kamla Devi', Last Vessel of FPV Series, Commissioned

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship 'Kamla Devi', the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) designed, built and delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd to the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is officially the fifth and last vessel of the series of FPVs designed and built by GRSE as per the specifications of the Indian Coast Guard.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is 48.9 meters long and 7.5 meters wide with a displacement of 308 tonnes. With three engines and water jets, she is capable of a top speed of 34 knots and an endurance of over 1,500 nautical miles. She also has an Integrated Bridge System and is fitted with a 40/60 gun as the main armament.
