Temperate Sub-Neptune Found Orbiting Nearby Red Dwarf

  • Using data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and several ground-based telescopes, astronomers discovered and confirmed a sub-Neptune exoplanet near the habitable zone of TOI-2285 (also known as TIC 329148988), an M-dwarf star located 137 light-years away in the constellation of Cepheus.
  • NASA's Kepler space mission revealed that planets with sizes between the Earth and Neptune (sub-Neptune-sized planets) are abundant in close-in orbits around stars other than the Sun.
  • Precise radius measurements for these planets have found that the 'hot' sub-Neptune-sized planets are classified into two populations: one is hotter and smaller planets and the other is cooler and larger planets, which are often referred to as super-Earths and mini-Neptunes, respectively.

  • But they will instead aim to launch on November 3, which "would have Crew-3 arriving at the space station later the same day.
  • The "Crew-3" team will spend six months on the orbital outpost and conduct research to help inform future deep space exploration and benefit life on Earth.

Hubble Observes Red Giant Star CW Leonis

  • CW Leonis, which is located 400 light-years away in the constellation of Leo, is a carbon star — a luminous type of red giant star with a carbon-rich atmosphere.
  • Also known as IRC +10216 and LEDA 1427054, it has an orange-reddish color due to its relatively low surface temperature of 1,260 degrees Celsius (2,300 degrees Fahrenheit).

France Launches Military Communications Satellite "Syracuse 4A"

  • France has successfully launched a state-of-the-art satellite namely 'Syracuse 4A' into orbit which was carried off by Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, in French Guiana. It is designed to allow France's armed forces across the globe to communicate swiftly and securely. The satellite can survey its close surroundings and move itself to escape an attack.
  • Syracuse IV produces a throughput three times higher (1.5 Gbit/sec) than Syracuse III by operating in two bands: X and Ka. Three satellites are to be placed in orbit: the second in 2022 and the third on an unknown date. The total cost of the Syracuse IV programme is EUR3.6 billion (nearly USD4.2 billion). Syracuse IV is the first French military satellite with the ability to detect other satellites that are trying to gather information from it or to destroy it.
