In a First, CLAT to be Conducted Twice in a Year

  • The Consortium of National Law University (CNLU) announced the dates to conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2022-23. For the first time, CNLU will conduct the CLAT for the years 2022 and 2023 in the same year. This is the first time that CLAT will be conducted twice in the same year.
  • CLAT 2022 will be held on May 8 while CLAT-2023 will be held on December 18, 2022. The consortium has also reduced the counselling fees from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 30,000. For reserved category candidates, the counselling fees will be Rs. 20,000.

CBSE Brings in MCQs for 1st Term Examination

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) finalised a new pattern for the board examination for the first term of Class 12 and Class 10, which will begin on November 16 and November 17, respectively. The first term will have multiple choice questions and the exam duration will be 90 minutes. According to the CBSE, this time, the students will be given 20 minute-reading time instead of 15. Every question will have four options, and the student has to encircle the correct one. They have been given the option to appear in the examination centre of their choice as due to Covid many of them were displaced. Many students are still at their native places, while their schools are at other locations.

BHU Gets New VC

  • Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain, director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, was appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
  • A Padma Shri awardee, Prof. Jain will hold the office for a period of three.
  • Jain served on the faculty of IIT Kanpur for 35 years from 1984-2019. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Roorkee (1979), and Masters (1980) and Doctoral (1983) degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.

National Achievement Survey Conducted Successfully

  • As per initial estimates shared by the Ministry of Education, nearly 96 per cent schools in 24 states and 92 per cent students participated in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conducted across the country.
  • The survey was conducted in different mediums of instruction as available in the sampled schools.
  • The survey, which assesses the competencies developed by the students at the grade levels of third, fifth, and eighth, is conducted every three years. The survey was last conducted in 2017 and was scheduled to take place in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, it was postponed until this year.

IIT Kanpur Develops Web-based 'Green' Monitoring System for Ganga

  • An Indo-US project has spurred Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to develop a web-based system to monitor the "health" of the Ganga.
  • The project has been jointly sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF).
  • The low-cost, multi-parameter, water quality monitor named Niracara Svayamsasita Vedh Shala (NSVS) consists an array of sensors and auto sampler on a stationary platform, which is semi-submersible, all-weather, robust and perfectly stable.
  • The "Aquatic Autono¬mous Observatory" would enable in situ monitoring, real-time data transmission and web-based visualisation of Ganga.

IIT Bombay Team Wins $250,000 XPrize, Elon Musk Foundation Grant at COP26

  • Four students and two teachers from IIT Bombay won a grant of $250,000 (approximately Rs. 1.85 crore) for the new-age technology at the Sustainable Innovation Forum at COP-26 in Glasgow.
  • The grant came from XPRIZE Foundation in collaboration with Elon Musk Foundation. XPRIZE is the global leader in designing and implementing innovative competition models to solve the world's grandest challenges.
  • The team created a tri-modular technology that can capture carbon dioxide from point sources of emission and transforming them into salts. It is the only team from India to win this award.
