Lt Gen Manoj Kuma Mago to Head National Defence College

Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Mago took over as the Commandant of National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.
Lt Gen Mago, who hails from Ludhiana, was commanding the 10 Corps at Bathinda before being given the assignment at NDC that entails evolving a strategic culture among the country's senior-most officials of the military, the civilian bureaucracy and the Indian Police Service. Lt Gen Mago, who passed out of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, was commissioned into 7th Battalion of the Brigade of Guards in 1984. He later commanded 16 Guards.

NCC to be Introduced as General Elective Credit Course

Recognizing the importance of NCC in shaping the youth of the country, University of Jammu issued a notification to incorporate NCC as a "General Elective Credit Course" under the Choice Based Credit System. This is in line with NEP 2020 from the upcoming academic session 2021-2022 of the University, with the objective of harnessing the full potential of NCC's capacity in youth development.
The syllabus of NCC adopted by University of Jammu for Senior Division/ Wing will be covered in 300 lectures over a three-year duration, in addition to two camps of 10 days each for becoming eligible to appear in the NCC 'B' and 'C' certificate examinations.

IIT and AIIMS Jodhpur Develop 'Talking Gloves' for the Differently Abled

Innovators from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Jodhpur have developed low-cost 'talking gloves' as a joint initiative. The gloves have been developed for people with speech disabilities.
The gloves use the principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning(MI) to automatically generate speech that will be language independent and facilitate the communication between people with speech disabilities and people without any speech disability. The device costs less than Rs. 5000.

IIT Roorkee Completes 175 Years of Existence

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, which began its journey in 1847 as the first engineering college in the British Empire, completed 175 years.
The institute launched two major projects on the 175th foundation day– a 1.3 PetaFLOPS supercomputing facility as part of the national supercomputing mission and SCADA-based Smart Energy Management System, which will establish an integrated monitoring analytics and control centre for systems ranging from energy assets to transport, water, and waste.
The institute also launched its initiative of the creation of research capacity by engaging with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) around IIT Roorkee and inviting children from schools to visit IIT Roorkee to enhance the exchange of knowledge and experience with the fascinating facts, research culture, how the future could be, and what all career options they can explore.
In September 2001, the university was declared an institute of national importance, bypassing a bill in Parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.

Collins Dictionary Picks NFT as Word of the Year

Collins Dictionary chose the term NFT as its word of the year after surging interest in the digital tokens that can sell for millions of dollars brought it into the mainstream.
NFT is short for non-fungible token. Collins defines it as a unique digital certificate, registered in a blockchain that is used to record ownership of an asset such as an artwork or a collectible.
Experts at Collins, based in Glasgow, Scotland, chose NFT because of its meteoric rise in usage, up 11,000% in 2021.
The Oxford English Dictionary's publisher, had chosen 'vax' as its word of the year, as interest in vaccinations spiked over the past 12 months.

Supporting Andhra's Learning Transformation (SALT) Project

Government of Andhra Pradesh, Union government and the World Bank have signed legal agreements for a loan of $250 million for the "Supporting Andhra's Learning Transformation (SALT) project".
SALT project aims to improve the quality of learning for more than 50 lakh students in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The project was launched with a five-year limit, starting from 2021-22.
SALT is the first of its kind innovative project to train teachers, facilitate State-level assessment and establish an effective education management & information system. It would help in providing universal access to quality education in the state. It will also support Andhra Pradesh in fulfilling its vision of transforming government schools into vibrant institutions which will focus on foundational learning for children.

Bengal Govt. Partners with Edtech Start-up to Drive Digital Learning

The West Bengal government and an Edtech start-up announced a strategic partnership to drive digital learning and career development programmes across the state.
The partnership with the start-up, Schoolnet, will help provide an online e-learning platform in Bengali, Geneo eSekha', to students from classes 5 to 10.
The pupils of state-run and government-aided schools will be able to access the portal through the official website of West Bengal's School Education Department.
In addition, Schoolnet will be providing a multi-lingual career guidance portal to the School Education Department especially for students from Classes 9 to 12 for future career advancement.
