Go Electric Campaign Launched in India

  • Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways along with R. K. Singh, the Union Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, launched the "Go Electric" Campaign to spread awareness on the benefits of e-mobility and EV Charging Infrastructure as well as electric cooking in India.
  • The Go Electric Campaign is an initiative aimed at reducing the import dependence of our country in the coming years and has also been projected as an important step towards a cleaner and greener future. The campaign is aimed at creating awareness at PAN-India level and is expected to boost the confidence of Electric Vehicle manufacturers.

Cabinet Approves PLI Scheme for Telecom Sector

  • The Union Cabinet approved a Rs. 12,195-crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for domestic manufacturing of telecom and networking products such as switches, routers, radio access network, wireless equipment and other internet of things (IoT) access devices.
  • The core component of this scheme is to offset the huge import of telecom equipment worth more than Rs. 50,000 crore and reinforce it with 'Made in India' products, both for domestic markets and exports. Currently, India imports over 80 per cent of its telecom and wireless networking equipment.
  • With the inclusion of telecom equipment manufacturing under the ambit of PLI schemes, the total number of sectors under such programmes stands at 13. All the sectors included under the various PLI schemes are mostly labour-intensive and aim to attract global manufacturing giants into the Indian manufacturing space.

  • PM Modi on February 18, 2021, launched 'Mahabahu-Brahmaputra' and laid the foundation stone of the Dhubri Phulbari bridge via video conferencing. Prime Minister also performed Bhūmi pujan for the construction of Majuli Bridge.
  • While sharing the news of various projects in the state, PM Modi in a tweet mentioned that it will be a landmark day for the development journey of Assam as the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra initiative will be launched.
  • The Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Mansukh Mandaviya; the Minister of Roads Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari; the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma; the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and DoNER Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh were present during the event.

Cabinet Nod to Juvenile Law

  • The Union Cabinet approved amendments to the juvenile justice law to increase the scrutiny of child care institutions and enhance the role of district magistrates to ensure the set-up works in the best interests of children.
  • District magistrates (DMs) along with additional district magistrates (ADMs) will monitor the functioning of various agencies under the JJ Act in every district.
  • Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said that a bill in this regard would be brought in Parliament to amend The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015, that will expand its purview.

Mamata Banerjee Launches Scheme to Provide Meal at Rs. 5 to Poor People

  • Ahead of the assembly election in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee virtually launched the 'Maa' scheme under which her government would provide a meal at a nominal cost of Rs. 5 to poor people.
  • They will get a platter of rice, Dal, a vegetable and egg curry for Rs. 5, she said adding that the state government will bear a subsidy of Rs. 15 per plate.
  • Self-help groups will operate the kitchens from 1 pm to 3 pm every day and such kitchens will be set up everywhere in the state gradually.
