Algerian Author Wins Top Arab Fiction Prize

Algerian author Abdelouahab Aissaoui has won the 13th International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) with his novel "The Spartan Court."
Backed by the UK's Booker Prize Foundation, IPAF is financed by Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism.
"The Spartan Court" was chosen from a shortlist of six novels.
Aissaoui will receive $50,000 and funds will be provided to translate the book into English.

Indigram Labs Foundation Announces Winners of its Smart Village Program - 'Adhunik Gram'

Indigram Labs Foundation, a leading agri-tech focused incubator, has announced the winners of its smart village program - 'Adhunik Gram', an initiative to empower agribusiness in rural India.
The winner was IndusTill FarmeTech Pvt. Ltd. which won a cash prize of Rs 1 Lakh. The 1st runner up was Urdhvam Environmental Technologies Pvt. Ltd. which won a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and the 2nd runner up was Impagro farming solutions Pvt. Ltd. which won Rs. 30,000.

Zoya Akhtar Honoured With IIFTC Tourism Impact Award 2020

Asia's largest film tourism event - 8th India International Film Tourism Conclave (IIFTC) honored the cult filmmaker - Zoya Akhtar with IIFTC Tourism Impact Award 2020 for her outstanding contribution to the world tourism through her cinema.
The award was presented by Naheed Nenshi - Mayor of Calgary, Alberta (Canada) at a glittering award ceremony held recently in Mumbai.
While addressing the media about Zoya Akhtar winning the award Harshad Bhagwat - Promoter of IIFTC Awards said, "Zoya Akhtar set the trend in the film tourism space with her 2011 classic 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' shot in Spain, following it up with 2015 comedy-drama 'Dil Dhadakne Do' shot in Turkey. She has single-handedly promoted tourism of these counties through her films making her a well-deserving winner."

Indian-Origin US Author Wins 2020 PEN/Hemingway Award

Indian-origin American author Ruchika Tomar has been named the winner of the prestigious 2020 PEN/Hemingway Award for her debut novel 'A Prayer for Travelers' which the judges described as a "remarkable piece of writing, astute in style and structure".
Tomar, hailing from California, is currently a lecturer at Stanford University.
The award, honouring a "distinguished" first novel, includes a USD 25,000 prize and a month-long Residency Fellowship at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, a retreat for artists and writers, valued at USD 10,000.

Probability Experts Awarded Abel Maths Prize

The Abel Prize for mathematics was awarded to Israeli-American Hillel Furstenberg and Russian-born Gregory Margulis, both probability experts, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters said.
The pair were honoured "for pioneering the use of methods from probability and dynamics in group theory, number theory and combinatorics," the Academy said in a statement. Furstenberg, 84, is affiliated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, while Margulis, a decade younger, is at Yale University. Furstenberg and Margulis invented so-called random walk techniques, or a path consisting of a succession of random steps. The study of random walks is a central branch of probability theory. The pair used the technique "to investigate mathematical objects such as groups and graphs, and in so doing introduced probabilistic methods to solve many open problems," the statement said. Their work "has opened up a wealth of new results" in diverse areas of mathematics and "brought down the traditional wall between pure and applied mathematics".
Born in Berlin, Furstenberg and his Jewish family fled Nazi Germany for the US just before the start of World War II. After starting his career at top universities like Princeton and MIT, he left the United States for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1965 and stayed there until his retirement in 2003.

Paramananda Majumder Conferred the Moghai Ojah Aaward

Eminent researcher and writer Dr. Paramananda Majumder was presented the 10th Moghai Ojah Award at a function held at the auditorium of Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium. He was awarded for his significant role in raising issues of public interest and society's betterment. Majumder compiled the first book on the life and works of folk musician Moghai Ojah. The award recognized his invaluable contribution in bringing dhol maestro Moghai Ojah and his magnificent skill of playing the dhol back to the public domain by compiling a book on him. Moghai Ojah award: The Moghai Ojah award was instituted in 2011 by the Jorhat district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP). The award is annually presented on 15 March, on the death anniversary of Ojah. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.21,000, a citation, a gamosa, a seleng chadar, and a memento.
