Telangana State Agricultural University Vice Chancellor Praveen Rao Wins Dr. MS Swaminathan Award

V. Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Professor Jaya Shankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU), won the 7th edition of Dr. MS Swaminathan Award for the period 2017- 2019. The award will be conferred on him in June 2020. The award was constituted by Retired Indian Council of Agricultural Research Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL).
The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a citation.
The Award Selection Committee was held under the Chairmanship of RS Paroda, former Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The Selection Committee selected Praveen Rao for the award recognising his contributions in the fields of agricultural research, teaching, extension and administration.
Praveen Rao handled 13 research & 6 consultancy projects on micro irrigation in India, Israel and South Africa.

PV Sindhu Wins BBC Indian Sportswoman of Year

Indian badminton player PV Sindhu won the inaugural BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award following a public vote.
The shortlist of five contenders also consisted of sprinter Dutee Chand, boxer Mary Kom, wrestler Vinesh Phogat and para-badminton player Manasi Joshi.
In 2019, Sindhu became the first Indian to win badminton World Championship gold in Basel, Switzerland.
She is considered a medal prospect at this year's Olympics in Tokyo.

President Awards Nari Shakti Puraskar of WCD Ministry

President Ram Nath Kovind gave away the Nari Shakti Puraskar to 15 women in Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of International Women's Day.
The awardees are 103 year old athlete Mann Kaur, Indian Air Force's first women fighter pilots Mohana Singh, Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvedi, Farmers Padala Bhudevi and Bina Devi, Artisan Arifa Jaan, Environmentalist Chami Murmu, Entrepreneur Nilza Wangmo, Automotive research professional Rashmi Urdhwardeshe, Lady Mason Kalavati Devi, Twin Mountaineers Tashi and Nungshi Malik classical vocalist Kaushiki Chakroborty and 98 year old Karthyayini Amma who topped the literacy exam in 2018. Another awardee 105 year old Bhageerathi Amma could not travel to Delhi to recieve the award.
The National Award is given annually to individuals, groups, institutions in recognition of their exceptional work towards the cause of women empowerment, especially for vulnerable and marginalized women.

2020 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards

Veteran theatre director and teacher Barry John was chosen for Lifetime Achievement honour for 2020 at the upcoming Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META).
The 76-year-old, mentor including Shahrukh Khan, Manoj Bajpayi, Mira Nair and Lillete Dubey, will be conferred upon with the award on March 19 along with the winners of the 15th META festival.
Born and educated in the UK, John, who has lived and worked in India since 1968, was founder-director of Delhi''s most acclaimed company, "Theatre Action Group". Brain behind the CBSE curriculum for theatre, he was also on the faculty of the National School of Drama (NSD), where he taught and directed actors like Anupam Kher, Pankaj Kapoor, Anu Kapoor, Surekha Sikri and Manohar Singh.

Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2019

World champion shuttler P. V. Sindhu was named Sportsperson of the Year at the fourth Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2019 in New Delhi.
Rio Olympic silver medallist Sindhu, who won the world championship gold at Basel, Switzerland, last year also bagged the Unbreakable Spirit of Sports award.
Former India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia was given the Lifetime Achievement award, while hockey legend and three-time Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh Sr. was honoured with the Icon of the Century award.
National badminton coach Pulella Gopichand won the Mentor of the Year award, while former shooter Jaspal Rana was recognised as the Coach of the Year.
Sindhu bagged a hat-trick of awards when she was named as the Badminton Player of the Year in female category, while B. Sai Praneeth got the recognition among male shuttlers.
India's first world championship silver medallist pugilist Amit Phanghal won the recognition among male boxers while Lovlina Borgohain bagged the award among female boxers.
