Shobha Sekhar Receives "The Medal of the Order of Australia"

Indian Musician Shobha Sekhar, the founder of Kalakruthi a music organisation in Australia received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on the Queen's Birthday 2020 for her service to Indian music and dance.
Shobha Sekhar is a management graduate and an artist based in Montreal. She works as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne. She was trained by DKP, DK Jayaraman and K V Narayanaswamy.
She started the Kalakruthi in 1994 affiliated with The Music Academy, Chennai and has been training many aspirants of Carnatic music. She has conducted several concerts in Australia and all around the world.
The Medal of the Order of Australia is awarded to the individuals contributing to their community or to Australia globally or domestically.

Sony World Photography Awards 2020

Sony World Photography Awards announced its winners for the year 2020. The Sony World Photography Awards received more than 345,000 images from 203 countries and territories, submitted for its four competition categories: Professional, Open, Youth and Student.
Photographer Pablo Albarenga from Uruguay was declared the grand prize winner of the Photographer of the Year title for his series 'Seeds of Resistance'.
In the Open competition, UK's Tom Oldham won the first place for Black Francis - a black and white portrait of Pixies frontman Charles Thompson.
Greek Student Ioanna Sakellaraki was chosen as Student Photographer of the Year 2020 for her series Aeiforia, which captures solar panels, wind turbines and battery farms on the Greek island of Tilos - the first in the Mediterranean to run almost entirely on renewable energy.
Hsien-Pang Hsieh emerged as the overall winner in the Youth competition for his image 'Hurry', which appears to show a street performer walking in a hurry while he is, in fact, standing still.

Grammys Rename "Urban Contemporary" Category

The organisation behind the Grammy Awards announced a number of changes to its category names, including changing "urban contemporary" to "progressive R&B."
The Recording Academy's move comes amid growing criticism in the music industry over the term "urban" that has long generalised genres including hip-hop and R&B but which many believe belittles the innovation of black music.
The renamed category "is intended to highlight albums that include the more progressive elements of R&B.
In its rechristening announcement, the academy also said it would change Best Rap/Sung Performance to Best Melodic Rap Performance.
The academy did not completely drop "urban:" it remains in categories including the newly titled field "Best Latin Pop or Urban Album."
The Recording Academy also changed its controversial but prestigious "Best New Artist" award, removing the eligibility requirement that capped a specified number of releases.

NASA Honours Renjith Kumar with "NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal"

Renjith Kumar, Engineer from Kerala and Indian Entrepreneur based in Virginia is honoured with NASA's highest form of recognition for a non-governmental individual "NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal" for his service to NASA through executive leadership, engineering contribution, technical excellence and customer satisfaction.
The "NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal" is given for the non-governmental individuals or individuals who are not a part of government employees during the performed service who provide a level of excellence supporting or impacting the success of NASA's missions and contribution in NASA's advancement of United States interests.
R. K. Chetty Pandipati was the first Indian to win this award in 2002.

Asia's Version of Nobel Prize Awards Cancelled

The Ramon Magsaysay awards, regarded as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize, have been cancelled this year due to the global pandemic. This is time third time that the annual awards have been disrupted in six decades.
The Manila-based foundation that hands out the awards said that it has no choice but to cancel the awards this year "with the COVID-19 pandemic practically immobilising the world." The awards were also cancelled due to a financial crisis in 1970 and a disastrous earthquake that hit the Philippines in 1990.
The awards are named after a popular Philippine president who died in a 1957 plane crash and honour "greatness of spirit in selfless service to the peoples of Asia."

Hindu Group Wins Two International Media Awards

The Hindu Group has won two awards at the International News Media Association (INMA) Global Media Awards 2020. This year, the competition received 922 entries for 16 categories from 262 news brands in 44 countries. The winners were announced in a global broadcast recently. The awards were given under Group 1 representing regional/local brands and Group 2 representing global/national brands.
In Group 1, The Hindu secured the first place for its campaign 'Cadbury Sweet Kondattam' for Client Mondelez India for 'Best Idea to Acquire or Retain Advertising Clients'. In Group 2, The Hindu Group secured the second place for its 'Stay home. Stay vigilant.' campaign for 'Best Initiative in Response to Covid-19'.

Javed Akhtar Wins 2020 Richard Dawkins Award

Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar won the 2020 Richard Dawkins Award for critical thinking, holding religious dogma up to scrutiny, advancing human progress and humanist values.
Akhtar has become the first Indian to be given the honour, which recognises distinguished individual from the field of science, scholarship, education, or entertainment, who publicly proclaims the values of secularism and rationalism and upholding scientific truth.
The award is named after world-renowned English evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Actor-comedian Ricky Gervais received the honour last year.
