Kritika Pandey Wins 2020 Commonwealth Short Story Prize

  • Kritika Pandey won the 2020 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. The 29-year-old received the coveted honour for her short story, 'The Great Indian Tee and Snakes', which centres around an unlikely friendship struck at the background of a tea stall.
  • She is a 2020 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Master of Fine Arts for Poets and Writers.
  • Every year, The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is awarded for the best unpublished short fiction. It should range from 2,000-5000 words in English. Any Commonwealth citizens aged 18 years and above is eligible for it. This year, the prize received over 5000 entries from 49 countries. The judging panel is well represented, with each representing five regions of the Commonwealth.

Government to Release Commemorative Stamp of Former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao

  • Government announced that it will release commemorative stamp to honour former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao after celebrating his 100th birth anniversary. He is regarded as the 'Father of Indian Economic Reforms'.
  • P. V. Narasimha Rao served as 9th Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996.
  • He is the only non-Gandhi who completed a full term as Prime Minister. He was also the 1st Prime Minister of the country to hail from South India.
  • It is a limited-issue postal stamp to commemorate a place, event, person, or object of historical importance. This stamp is owned by collectors and sold privately through auctions and online.

MyGov Corona Helpdesk Bags Two Awards at CogX 2020

  • AI enabled MyGov Corona Helpdesk bagged two awards under categories (1) "Best Innovation for Covid-19 – Society" and (2) "People's Choice Covid-19 Overall Winner", at the CogX 2020, which is a prestigious Global Leadership Summit and Festival of AI & Emerging Technology held annually in London. The awards were won by Technical Partner of MyGov, JioHaptik Technologies Limited.
  • MyGov is the world's largest citizen engagement platform, which facilitates two-ways communication between the government and citizen and facilitates participatory governance in India, the world's largest democracy. In the fight against Covid-19, MyGov, JioHaptik Technologies Limited and WhatsApp team collaborated to develop AI enabled MyGov Corona Helpdesk in the record time of 5 days including weekend.
  • CogX is one of the world's largest events on AI, held annually in London with over 15,000 participants in attendance from the highest levels of business, government, industry, and research. The Cogx Awards are given out to the best-of-the-best in AI and emerging technologies across the world. After a rigorous evaluation, Indian chatbot 'MyGov Corona Helpdesk' was chosen among hundreds of entries that made a difference to society during the pandemic.

Rangarajan Gets Lifetime Achievement Award on Statics Day

  • Former Reserve Bank of India governor C. Rangarajan was conferred with the lifetime achievement award 'Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics' for his contribution to statistics on the occasion of Statistics Day.
  • In his acceptance speech, Rangarajan highlighted the importance of credibility of official statistics.
  • Besides heading RBI and the Prime Minister's Advisory Council, Rangarajan was chairman of the National Statistical Commission, set up in 2000 to review the statistical system.

Popstar Beyonce Receives Humanitarian Award

  • Twenty-four-time Grammy winner Popstar Beyonce received the Humanitarian Award at 20th edition of annual BET Awards 2020, for her long standing philanthropic work, including her COVID-19 relief efforts. The event was held virtually for the 1st time in June 2020.
  • Rapper Lil Wayne gavee tribute to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash outside Los Angeles on January 26 along with his daughter and seven others.
  • Wayne Brady honoured Little Richard, who died of bone cancer on May 9.
  • Nicolas Johnson, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, and D-Nice were recognised as 2020 Shine A Light honourees.
  • Assa Traore, French anti-racist activist were honored with the BET International Global Good Award.
  • BET, the American award show was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

Prof. P.V. Sukhatme National Award

  • Dr. Arvind Pandey, former Director National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Dr. Akhilesh Chandra Kulshreshtha, Ex-Addl. Director General, MoSPI, Government of India were jointly given the Prof. P.V. Sukhatme National Award in Statistics 2020 for their lifetime contribution in the field of Statistics The winners of 'On the Spot Essay Writing Competition' for Post Graduate Students on the subject relevant to Statistics organized at All India level were also felicitated.

Skipping Sikh Honoured For Raising Funds For UK's National Health

  • A British Sikh, who became a social media star as the "Skipping Sikh" after he took on skipping and fundraising for the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) during the coronavirus lockdown, has been awarded the 'Points of Light' honour by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
  • Rajinder Singh from Harlington in west London, began filming exercise videos earlier this year, bringing together over 250,000 viewers on YouTube, encouraging people to remain active and raising over 12,000 pounds for NHS charities.
  • The award, in recognition of Mr Singh's fundraising efforts and spreading the simple message of "health is wealth" and "stay active and stay happy", marks the 1,410th such award.
  • Points of Light are outstanding individual volunteers and people making a change in their community, who are honoured every weekday by the UK prime minister to recognise their inspirational volunteer work.

Gulabbai Sangamnerkar and Madhuvanti Dandekar to get Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Maharashtra Culture Minister Amit Deshmukh announced that Vithabai Narayangaokar lifetime achievement award 2018-19 will be conferred upon the senior tamasha (folk art) artist, Gulabbai Sangamnerkar and Sangeetacharya Annasaheb Kirloskar musical theatre lifetime achievement award will be given to Veteran theatre actress-singer Madhuvanti Dandekar.
  • Both the awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a citation and a memento.
  • Gulabbai Sangamnerkar started to work in the field of Tamasha from the age of 9.
  • She has appeared in some Hindi films & has also performed some songs in the Lata Mangashekar's album, 'Ajolchi Gaani'.
  • Madhuvanti Dandekar's theatre career spans more than 5 decades. She has performed in 25 Marathi stage musicals.
