MIT Professor Wins Top AI Award for Cancer, Drug Research

  • Regina Barzilay , a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor using computer science to detect cancer and discover new drugs won a new $1 million award for artificial intelligence.
  • The world's biggest AI society awarded its top prize to Regina Barzilay, a professor at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
  • Barzilay is a breast cancer survivor whose 2014 diagnosis led her to shift her AI work to creating systems for drug development and early cancer diagnosis.
  • Her early diagnosis tool has been tested in multiple hospitals, including Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital and others in Taiwan and Sweden.
  • She's the inaugural winner of the new annual award given by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and funded by Chinese online education company Squirrel AI.
  • It's meant to elevate AI advancements to the level of a Nobel Prize or computer science's Turing Award, while also highlighting AI research that benefits society.

Nobel Winners to Get $110,000 More as Prize Money Increased

  • Winners of the prestigious Nobel prizes this year will receive an extra 1 million crowns ($110,000), the head of the foundation which oversees the awards said.
  • Prize money will increase to 10 million crowns this year.
  • "The decision has been made due to the fact that our costs and capital are in a stable relation in a completely different way than previously," said the head of the Nobel Foundation Lars Heikensten.
  • Dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel left around 31 million crowns - about 1.8 billion crowns in today's money according to the Foundation - to fund the prizes, which have been awarded since 1901.
  • The prize amount has varied over time, starting at 150,000 crowns and reaching 1 million crowns in 1981.

  • Emmy Awards 2020 were hosted live by Jimmy Kimmel from an empty Los Angeles Staples Center. The nominees tuned in from their homes in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. The winners collected their trophies from home this year The Emmys has become the first big awards show to take place amid the pandemic.
  • Popular sitcom Schitt's Creek wons most awards in a single season by a comedy series. He took home seven Primetime awards and nine Emmys in the comedy categories. The family saga series Succession took home five awards that also include best drama series at the 72nd Emmy Awards. Thus a new record is set.
  • Euphoria's Zendaya became the youngest winner for best lead actress in the drama series category.

  • The Emmy Award recognises excellence within areas of television and emerging media. These awards are administered by three sister organizations – International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Regional Chapters.

12 Teachers Awarded Under AICTE's First-ever Visvesvarya Best Teacher Awards 2020

  • A total of 12 faculty members of AICTE-approved institutes received the first-ever Visvesvarya Best Teacher Awards 2020.
  • The awards were conferred by Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on the eve of Engineers Day. The event was organised in the virtual mode due to the pandemic.
  •  The Minister said that the awards have been introduced to identify extraordinary teachers and recognise their excellence, best practice, and innovation in the field of higher technical education at the national level for degree and diploma institutions.

Udit Singhal Named in UN's List of 2020 Class of Young Leaders for Sustainable Development Goals

  • Udit Singhal, an 18-year old Indian boy has been named by the United Nations in the list of 2020 Class of Young Leaders for Sustainable Development Goals. It is a highest-profile recognition opportunity for the youngsters who are leading efforts on the world's most pressing issues.
  • He has been named to the 2020 Class of 17 Young Leaders for SDGs. Udit Singhal is the founder of Glass2Sand, a zero-waste ecosystem that has been addressing the growing problem of glass waste in Delhi.
  • The 2020 Class of 17 Young Leaders included the representatives from Bangladesh, Australia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Columbia, China, Egypt, Ireland, India, Nigeria, Liberia, Senegal, Peru, Pakistan, Uganda, Turkey, and United States.

Indian-origin Writer Avni Doshi's Novel Shortlisted for 2020 Booker Prize for Fiction

  • Burnt Sugar, Indian-origin writer Avni Doshi's debut novel about love between mother and daughter, is among six books shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize for Fiction. The winner will be announced on November 17, 2020.
  • The shortlisted authors each receive £2,500 and a specially bound edition of their book.
  • The winner will receive a further £50,000. The shortlist was selected from 162 submitted books published in the UK or Ireland between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020.
