Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, 2020

  • The Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology has been jointly awarded to Harvey J Alter, Charles M Rice and Michael Houhgton. The scientists have been awarded for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus.
  • The Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology is the first of six prizes that are to be announced in coming days. The other Noble Prizes to be announced are in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics.
  • The Prize Money of 1,118,000 USD for the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine also comes with a gold medal. The prize money was recently increased to adjust inflation.
  • In 2019, the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to scientists Peter Ratcliffe, Gregg Semenza and William Kaelin for discovering how the body cells sense and react to low oxygen levels.
  • Hepatitis C virus spreads through blood-to-blood contact. This can occur through injection drug use, transfusions and needlestick injuries. Also, the virus can spread from a mother to her baby. The virus does not spread through superficial contacts.
  • No vaccine has been discovered against Hepatitis C. There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. They are administered in India under Universal Immunization Programme. Three injections are provided in a gap of six to twelve months.
  • No vaccine has been discovered against Hepatitis C. As of 2017, around 71 million people world wide have been infected with Hepatitis C.

Swach Bharat Awards 2020

  • The Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Skekhawat presented the Swachh Bharat Awards, 2020. The awards were given under cleanliness categories and drinking water category.
  • The awards were presented under three categories namely Swachh Sundar Samudayik Shouchalaya, Gandagi Mukth Bharat and Samudayik Shouchalaya Abhiyan.
  • The following states and blocks won first prize under Swachh Sundar Samudayik Shouchalaya category
  • Gujarat won the first prize under Swachh Sundar Samudayik Shouchalaya category at state level.
  • The Tirunelveli of Tamil Nadu got the first prize at district level
  • Kharchrod block in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh received the first position at block level
  • The Chinnanur village of Tamil Nadu bagged the first prize a Gram Panchayat level
  • Under the Samudayik Shouchalya category, the following won the prizes
  • Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh were the best performing states under this category
  • Prayagraj and Bareilly won the best performing districts
  • Under the Gandagi Mukt Bharat Mission, Telangana and Haryana were awarded the first prizes.

Robert Lewandowski Named UEFA Men's Player of the Year

  • Robert Lewandowski was named UEFA men's player of the year following a superb season in which he won the treble with Bayern Munich. Lewandowski was at the Champions League group-stage draw in Geneva to receive the award, just weeks after Bayern won the 2019/20 edition of the competition. The Poland striker, who scored 55 goals in 47 games as Bayern also won the Bundesliga and German Cup, saw off Bayern team-mate Manuel Neuer and Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne to win the award.
  • Lewandowski also picked up the award for best forward in last season's Champions League after amassing 15 goals in 10 games. In one match against Red Star Belgrade he needed just 14 minutes to score four times.
  • The 32-year-old was also top scorer in the Bundesliga last season with 34 goals, equal to a goal a game in the 18-team league.
  • It was the fifth time he claimed the award for the highest number of goals in the German top flight since arriving at Bayern from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

Adil Hussain Bags Best Actor Award at Indo-German Film Week

  • Actor Adil Hussain has bagged the Best Actor award at the Indo German Film Week in Berlin, for two of his recent performances - Pareeksha and Nirvana Inn. Prakash Jha directed Pareeksha while Vijay Jayapal had helmed Nirvana Inn.
  • Adil was most recently seen as Buchchi - a rickshaw-puller making all efforts to ensure best education for his child in Prakash Jha's film. Nirvana Inn is yet to release. Adil wrote in two separate tweets, "Thrilled to have received the Best Actor Award for the role of Buchchi Paswan in Pareeksha @Pareeksha2020 at the #IndoGermanFilmWeek in Berlin last night. Thank You for this recognition. I share this Award with dearest @prakashjha27 . And of course with the entire team."

India's Sehgal Foundation Selected Co-runner up for Citizen Diplomacy Award

  • India's Sehgal Foundation has been selected as a co-runner up of the prestigious Citizen Diplomacy Award for its human rights and women's empowerment work in rural Indian communities.
  • The award will be presented by Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Aaron Ringel during a virtual ceremony.
  • The fourth annual Citizen Diplomacy Award will be presented to Mohamed Amin Ahmed, founder, chairman and executive director of "Average Mohamed." Along with Sehgal Foundation, Tempe Sister Cities is the other co-runner up of the prestigious annual award.
  • Ahmed was selected for his grassroots work on countering violent extremism by engaging audiences in meaningful discussions about true Islamic values and institutions, democratic ideals and civil society.
  • Tempe Sister Cities was selected as a co-runner up for its unique approach to citizen diplomacy incorporating traditional student exchanges and community outreach.
  • The Department of State's Bureau of Global Public Affairs launched the Citizen Diplomacy Award in 2017 to celebrate the significant, beneficial contributions of US citizens and organisations to furthering the US foreign policy objectives and strengthening relationships around the world.

Kerala Tourism Bags PATA Grand Award

  • Kerala Tourism's internationally acclaimed 'Human by Nature' campaign has bagged the prestigious PATA Grand Award 2020 for marketing.
  • The award, one of the three PATA grand awards, gives a stimulus to the tourism industry in the State that is in a crisis for over six months due to the pandemic. The awards were announced at a virtual presentation ceremony in Beijing.
  • The event was attended by Minister for Tourism Kadakampally Surendran; Secretary, Tourism, Rani George; Tourism Director P. Bala Kiran; PATA Chief Executive Officer Mario Hardy; and Macao Government Tourism Office Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes.
  • 'Human by Nature' was a marketing strategy to revive tourism that was hit by the 2018 floods and the Nipah outbreak. Showcasing culture and daily life of the people, it was conceptualised and scripted by Stark Communications. The campaign had helped Kerala Tourism achieve record growth of 17.2% in tourism arrivals in 2019, the highest in 24 years.
  • The PATA Gold Awards 2020 attracted 121 entries from 62 organisations and individuals worldwide. The winners were selected by a committee of 16 personalities from various destinations.
  • This year's awards recognised the achievements of three Grand title winners and 21 gold awards.
