International Day of the Girl Child

  • The International Day of the Girl Child, commemorated globally on October 11, stands as a testament to the world's commitment to recognising and uplifting the rights, voices, and potential of girls everywhere.
  • At the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the first time in history. This plan was the most progressive blueprint ever proposed for advancing the rights of not only women but girls. The Beijing Declaration is the first to precisely call out girls' rights, according to the United Nations.
  • On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognise girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
  • The 2024 International Day of the Girl theme is 'Girls' vision for the future'. This year's (2024) theme conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls' voices and vision for the future.

World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10. This global observance aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilise efforts in support of mental health care worldwide.
  • World Mental Health Day was founded in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), led by Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter. This was first observed on October 10 when 12 countries participated. The goal of this day is to spread awareness, reduce stigma related to mental health and mobilise global support.
  • The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 is 'It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace'.

World Sight Day

  • World Sight Day is an annual event observed on the second Thursday of October (In 2024 it was observed on October 10), aimed at raising awareness about eye health and visual impairment worldwide. Organised by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), World Sight Day brings attention to the growing need for access to eye care services and encourages governments, organisations, and individuals to prioritise the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairments.
  • World Sight Day was established in the year 2000 by the IAPB as part of its "VISION 2020: The Right to Sight" initiative. The initiative was a collaboration between the World Health Organisation (WHO) and IAPB, aimed at eliminating preventable blindness by the year 2020. The first observance of World Sight Day marked the beginning of a long-term strategy to fight global vision impairment.
  • The theme for World Sight Day 2024 is 'Children, love your eyes'. It emphasises the significance of safeguarding eye health and vision, raising awareness about vision impairment and blindness, and promoting proper eye and vision care.

World Post Day

  • World Post Day is celebrated annually on October 9 to raise awareness about the role of the postal sector in our everyday lives, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.
  • This day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. The UPU was founded in Bern, Switzerland, as a global organisation to streamline international mail services and create a unified postal system, making it easier for countries to exchange mail.
  • The year 2024 marked 150 years of the UPU, and the world celebrated World Post Day with the theme '150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations'.

Indian Air Force Day

  • Every year on October 8, India recognises Indian Air Force Day to honour the servicemen and pilots who have sacrificed their lives for the nation and to commemorate the establishment of the Indian Air Force (IAF). This year (2024) marks the 92nd celebration, which took place at Marina Beach in Chennai, featuring an airshow.
  • The Indian Air Force was established on October 8, 1932, as an auxiliary force under British rule. Initially, it consisted of a limited number of aircraft and personnel. The first official flight took place on April 1, 1933, marking the beginning of its operational journey. Over the decades, the IAF has transformed into one of the world's most formidable air forces, playing crucial roles in military operations and humanitarian missions.
  • The theme for Indian Air Force Day 2024 is "Bhartiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar" (Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant). This theme reflects the IAF's commitment to self-reliance and modernisation, aligning with India's vision for a robust defense capability.
