PM Modi Launches National Learning Week

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Karmayogi Saptah'-- National Learning Week, with the exercise seeking to impart fresh impetus towards individual and organisational capacity development for civil servants. The 'Mission Karmayogi' was launched in September 2020, and it has made substantial progress since then. It envisions a future-ready civil service rooted in Indian ethos, with a global perspective.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness about the people struggling and living in poverty worldwide. It is also a day to recognise all the efforts that are underway on various levels for the eradication of poverty across the world.
  • The United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 47/196, formally recognised October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 1992. This recognition was a call to the international community to strengthen its resolve in eradicating poverty and advancing human dignity and human rights for all.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is 'Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment Acting together for just, peaceful and inclusive societies.'

World Anaesthesia Day

  • World Anaesthesia Day is celebrated annually on October 16 to mark the significance of plays in modern medical care. It also serves as a reminder to recognise the work of anesthesiologists, who are essential for hassle-free surgeries.
  • On October 16, 1846, American dentist and physician William Thomas Green Morton conducted the first-ever diethyl ether anaesthesia experiment at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. It was given to remove a tumour in the jaw. This was the first time in history that a patient underwent surgery without feeling any pain.
  • The theme for the World Anaesthesia Day 2024 is 'Workforce Well Being'.

World Food Day

  • World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, serves as a global call to action in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
  • The member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organisation established World Food Day in November 1979 at the organisation's 20th General Conference and called for the observance of World Food Day on October 16, 1981. This decision was ratified by the UN General Assembly on December 5, 1980 and urged governments and international, national and local organisations to contribute to celebrating World Food Day. Since 1981, World Food Day has been held every year.
  • The theme for World Food Day 2024 is 'Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.'

International Day of Rural Women

  • The International Day of Rural Women is celebrated annually on October 15.
  • The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on October 15, 2008. This new international day, established by the General Assembly in its resolution 62/136 of 18 December 2007, recognises the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.

World Students' Day

  • World Students' Day in India is celebrated on October 15. This day honours the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, who is renowned for his contributions to education and his inspirational role in empowering students.
  • It was the United Nations that designated October 15 as a day to celebrate Dr. Kalam's birthday as World Students' Day, symbolising his legacy and encouraging the values he championed.
  • The 2024 theme, 'Empowering Students to be Agents of Change', emphasises responsibility, perseverance, and the role of education in societal transformation.

World Standards Day

  • Observed annually on October 14, World Standards Day recognises the invaluable contributions of the thousands of experts who create voluntary standards to ensure that products and services meet expectations, making everyday life safer and more enjoyable.
  • World Standards Day traces its origins to 1946, when delegates from 25 countries met in London and decided to establish an international organisation dedicated to promoting standardisation. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) was formed the following year, but it wasn't until 1970 that the first World Standards Day was officially celebrated.
  • This year, the theme for World Standards Day is "Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for the Changing Climate." This theme focuses on the importance of collaboration to achieve shared goals, particularly in the matter of climate change.
