World Elephant Day

  • World Elephant Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to raise global awareness about the protection and preservation of elephants.
  • World Elephant Day was first observed in 2012; initiated by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark, along with the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand. Since its inception, the day has grown into an internationally recognised event that focuses on the urgent need to protect African and Asian elephants.

International Youth Day

  • International Youth Day is observed on August 12 every year. It is celebrated to mark the contributions of the youth in the development of society alongside understanding the challenges faced by them.
  • The United Nations declared in 1999 that August 12 would be the annual International Youth Day. It was based on a suggestion to the UN General Assembly made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon on December 17, 1999. It was first celebrated on August 12, 2000, and since then, the day has been used to educate the general public.
  • The theme of International Youth Day 2025 is 'Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond'.

World Biofuel Day

  • Every year World Biofuel Day is observed on the 10th of August.
  • World Biofuel Day is observed to honour Sir Rudolf Diesel for his research experiments. In the year 1983, he successfully ran a diesel engine with the help of peanut oil by predicting that vegetable oil would replace fossil fuels in the next century to fuel various mechanical engines. Biofuel was an innovative discovery as it created a renewable energy source and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Nagasaki Day

  • Nagasaki Day is observed on August 9 to remember the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. It was a day for solemn remembrance of nuclear warfare and its awful effects, allowing the cause of world emergency, nuclear disarmament, and ensuring that such a tragedy never occurs again to take front stage.
  • Three days after Hiroshima was bombed, on August 9, 1945, the United States dropped the atomic bomb codenamed "Fat Man" on Nagasaki.
  • More than 74,000 people were killed instantly by the blast, and millions more suffered injuries and exposure to radiation, furthering their long-term pain.

  • Quit India Movement Day is observed on August 8 each year.
  • Quit India Movement Day is observed in India to commemorate the launch of the Quit India Movement on August 8, 1942, by the INC. The movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi at the AICC session in Bombay, which marked the start of a nationwide civil disobedience campaign to overthrow the foreign rule in India.

National Handloom Day

  • National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year. This day recognises the importance of handloom weavers to the nation's economy and culture. India's handloom sector boasts a rich cultural heritage. India's artisan community has kept traditional crafts alive by reimagining them in fresh, contemporary styles that appeal to today's consumers.
  • The Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905 had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers. In 2015, the Government of India declared August 7 as the National Handloom Day, commemorating the momentous occasion.
  • The first National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.
  • The theme for National Handloom Day 2025 is 'Handlooms – Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation'.
