BRICS CCI's 2nd Edition of Annual Direct Tax Summit & Awards 2020

BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI) organised the 2nd edition of Annual Direct Tax Summit & Awards 2020 in New Delhi in union with Achromic Point an international consulting firm. The Award aimed to resolve the issues related to direct tax and its implications. Dharampal Satyapal Limited won the award for Best In-house Direct Tax Team of the year.
The key topics discussed includes key amendments vide Budget 2020, India's tax litigation scenario and way forward, penalty and prosecution provisions under Income tax law, India's take on taxation of digital economy, cross border investments, structuring and transactions (key provisions), Black Money Act, Benami Law and Money Laundering laws – Government tightening the rope.

International Judicial Conference in New Delhi

International Judicial Conference was held in New Delhi on 22nd February. The conference was addressed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The topic of the one-day conference was "Judiciary and The Changing World".
Also, the theme of 'Gender Just World' was introduced at the conference.
They discussed the changes made by GoI to bring gender equality including recruitment of women in military service, changes in the selection process of fighter pilots, and the freedom to work at night in the mines.
The need for technology to deliver speedy justice was emphasised. The government made an effort to connect every court of the country to the e-court Integrated Mission Mode Project.
So far, 1500 obsolete laws have been abolished in the country. Also, many new laws to strengthen the society have been enacted.
Centre established National Judicial Data Grid, in order to make court procedures easier.
The synergy of artificial intelligence (AI) and human conscience is expected to give further impetus to judicial processes in India.
Distinguished Judges of the Supreme Court and various High Courts, Eminent lawyers and delegates from overseas also took part in the Conference.

Central Excise Day in India

Central Excise Day in India is celebrated on February 24. The holiday was established to recognise the contribution of the Central Board of Excise and Custom. The Board is a government agency responsible for administering matters relating to customs, central excise, service tax, and narcotics.
The Central Board of Excise and Custom is one of the oldest government agencies in India, it was established in 1855 as the Customs and General Excise department. Currently it operates under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. It is responsible for collecting excise duty, service tax, customs duty and narcotics duty, preventing smuggling and drug trafficking.
Central Excise Day is celebrated on February 24 to mark the enactment of the Central Excise and Salt Act in 1944. The holiday aims to honor the contribution of the Central Board of Excise and Custom to the country's economy and to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of its employees.
This professional holiday is celebrated across the country with seminars, workshops, educational and cultural events, awareness programs, competitions, and award ceremonies. The most outstanding employees of the excise and custom department are rewarded with special prizes for their service to the Indian government.

President to Inaugurate 'The Huddle'

The fourth edition of 'The Huddle', The Hindu's annual thought conclave, was held at the ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru on February 22 and 23.
President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the audience as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the conclave on February 22. The keynote address was delivered by the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Over the two days, The Huddle features 15 sessions and 32 speakers, showcased some of the best minds from the world of politics, business, academics, sports, entertainment and the arts. The sessions are designed to be interactive, and they take place before an invited audience.
From its launch in 2017, The Huddle has been designed to expand the space for democratic debate and provide an opportunity for speakers and members of the audience to interact formally and informally.
This year (2020), The Huddle is powered by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd.(HCCB), in association with the Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan governments.

International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21st February. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to promote the awareness of language and cultural diversity all across the world. It was first announced by UNESCO on November 17, 1999. Since then it is being celebrated every year. The date represents the day 21st February 1952 when four young students were killed in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, because of Bengali and Urdu language controversy. Languages are the most powerful way to preserve and develop culture and to promote it all across the world. Because of this unfortunate incident, International Mother Language Day is celebrated in all over the world, while it is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

TN and Karnataka to Observe Jayalalithaa's Birth Anniversary as 'Girl Children Protection Day'

Karnataka government will celebrate former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's birthday as 'State Women Children Protection Day' on February 24, said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
"Our State government will celebrate former CM J. Jayalalithaa's birthday on February 24 as State Women Children Protection Day, as she had worked for women and children and had launched many schemes for them," said Palaniswami in the State Assembly.
To honour the late leader's memory, the government will implement five new schemes, including a Rs. 2 lakh assistance by way of bank deposit, for the welfare of destitute girl children, the Chief Minister added. Hailing Jayalalithaa for her pioneering initiatives like the 'Cradle baby scheme' aimed at preventing female infanticide, he said such novel initiatives were continuously being implemented by the government.

World Day of Social Justice

World Day of Social Justice is observed on 20th February to raise voice against social injustice and to remove barriers regarding gender, race, inequality, religious discrimination, etc. It also highlights the social injustice done throughout the world and to look into the solutions and improvements.
On 26th November, 2007, the UN General Assembly declared 20^th February as the annual World Day of Social Justice. In 2009, this day was first observed.
The theme of World Day of Social Justice 2020 is "Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice". It focuses on social justice as it is the global mission of the UN to promote the development and human dignity.
