Sixth National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed on 7th August every year to honour the handloom weavers in the country. This year (2020) the 6th National Handloom Day is celebrated.
In July 2015, the Union government had declared 7th August as National Handloom Day with an aim to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry. On 7 August, 2015, the first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai.
To commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, 7 August was chosen as National Handloom Day. Swadeshi Movement was launched on 7 August, 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British Government. The objective of the movement was also to revive domestic products and production processes.

Hiroshima Day

Bells tolled in Hiroshima as Japan marked the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the world's first atomic bomb.
But memorial events were scaled back this year because of the pandemic.
On 6th August 1945, a US bomber dropped the uranium bomb above the city, killing around 140,000 people.
Three days later a second nuclear weapon was dropped on Nagasaki. Two weeks later Japan surrendered, ending World War Two.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the mayor of Hiroshima joined bomb survivors and descendants in the city's Peace Park.
The park is usually packed with thousands of people for the anniversary, But attendance was significantly reduced this year, with chairs spaced apart and most attendees wearing masks.
A moment's silence was held at 08:15, the exact time the bomb was dropped on the city.

New York Indian Film Festival 2020

Nivin Pauly won the Best Actor award for Moothon at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). While Sanjana Dipu won Best Child Actor for her role in the movie, Moothon also won an award under the Best Film category.
The film has been scripted by Mohandas and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who aided in penning its Hindi dialogues. Nivin Pauly features in the lead, with Sobhita Dhulipala, Roshan Mattew, Shashank Arora, Harish Khanna, and Omkaar in supporting roles.
Meanwhile, actor Garggi Ananthan won Best Actress honour for her lead role in Run Kalyani. Geetha J's Malayalam film is cantered around the protagonist Kalyani, a young woman who works as a cook while also taking care of her ailing aunt.
Achal Mishra won the Best Director Award for his film Gamak Ghar. Tailing Pond, a 2019 documentary directed by Saurav Vishnu won Best Documentary at the festival.

US Coast Guard Day

Coast Guard Day is held every August 4 to commemorate the founding of the United States Coast Guard as the Revenue Marine on August 4, 1790, by then-Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. On that date, U.S. Congress, guided by Hamilton, authorised the building of a fleet of the first ten Revenue Service cutters, whose responsibility would be enforcement of the first tariff laws enacted by the U.S. Congress under the U.S. Constitution.
The U.S. Coast Guard received its present name through an act of the U.S. Congress signed into law by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on January 28, 1915 that merged the Revenue Cutter Service with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, and provided the nation with a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws.

World Sanskrit Day

World Sanskrit Day, also known as Vishvasamskritadinam is an annual event focused around the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit that incorporates lectures about the language and is aimed to promote its revival and maintenance. It is celebrated on Shraavanapoornima, that is the Poornima day of the Shraavana month in the Hindu calendar. The Sanskrit organisation Samskrita Bharati is involved in promoting the day. In the year 2020, this day is celebrated on August 03.
The only Sanskrit newspaper in the world is called 'Sudharma'. The newspaper has been published since 1970 from Mysuru in Karnataka, and is also available online, given the fact that Sanskrit is said to be the most computer-friendly language.
Besides being the celebration of the language, the day essentially speaks of the importance of learning and knowing it, despite it being not as widely spoken as in ancient times. The day aims to educate younger generations of the history and the significance of the language. In schools and colleges, students who are learning the language, take part in many cultural programmes and competitions.
