Bangladesh Observes National Mourning Day

Bangladesh observed the National Mourning Day with heavy hearts amid various programmes, marking the 45th death anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – the architect of the country's independence -- was assassinated along with most of his family members at the dawn on August 15, 1975 by a cabal of army personnel under a deep-rooted conspiracy against the country and its independence.
His two daughters -- Sheikh Hasina, now the Prime Minister, and Sheikh Rehana -- survived the massacre as they were abroad at that time.
People from different walks of life commemorated the black day with grief and sorrow of losing the great leader and founder of independent Bangladesh. The day was a public holiday.

UK Marks 75th Anniversary of Victory over Japan Day

The UK marked the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, with a national moment of silence and service of remembrance, as well as tributes paid by world leaders.
Victory over Japan was declared on 15 August 1945, when the emperor Hirohito addressed his people and told them to stop fighting. The formal surrender of Japanese forces came on 2 September that year; the date traditionally commemorated by the US.

World Organ Donation Day

World Organ Donation Day is observed on 13th August to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and motivate people for donating organs after death.
The day provides an opportunity to come forward and pledge to donate their organs after death which will save the lives of various people. About organ donation, there are myths and fears in people's minds due to a lack of awareness.
Organ donation is retrieving a donor's organ like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas after the donor is deceased and then transplanting into another person who is in need of an organ.

International Youth Day

International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12th. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.
In 1999, the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
The first International Youth Day was observed on 12 August, 2000.
International Youth Day gives an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young peoples' voices, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement. The commemoration will take the form of a podcast-style discussion that is hosted by youth for youth, together with independently organized commemorations around the world that recognize the importance of youth participation in political, economic and social life and processes.
The theme of International Youth Day 2020, "Youth Engagement for Global Action" seeks to highlight the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced.

World Biofuel Day 2020

World Biofuel Day is observed annually on August 10 to raise awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. The day honours the research experiments by Sir Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel(inventor of the diesel engine) who ran an engine with peanut oil in 1893. In India, the day has been celebrated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas since 2015.
The day highlights various efforts made by the Government in the Biofuel sector.
On the occasion of the day, a webinar was organised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, with the theme "Biofuels towards Atmanirbhar Bharat".

Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. This event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection. It was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994, marking the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was first pronounced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples (1995–2004). In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade, from 2005–2015, with the theme of "A Decade for Action and Dignity".[1] People from different nations are encouraged to participate in observing the day to spread the UN's message on indigenous peoples. Activities may include educational forums and classroom activities to gain an appreciation and a better understanding of indigenous peoples.
By resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

PM Launches 'Gandagi Mukt Bharat', a Special Week-long Campaign to Free India of Garbage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched "Gandagi Mukt Bharat", a week-long campaign for 'swachhata' in the run-up to Independence Day.
During this week, each day till August 15 will have special 'swachhata' initiatives in urban and rural India to re-enforce the 'jan andolan' for 'swachhata'.
PM Modi launched the campaign while inaugurating the Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra (RSK) which is an interactive experience centre on the Swachh Bharat Mission at the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti at Rajghat in New Delhi.
The RSK is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and was first announced by the Prime Minister in April 2017, on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha.

Nagasaki Day 2020

The 9th August of every year is observed as Nagasaki day all over the world to promote peace and to create awareness about the hazards of nuclear weapons. The 9th August 2020, Marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan.
On 9th August 1945, three days after the bombing on Hiroshima, The United States dropped the Atomic bomb code named "Fat Man" over the city of Nagasaki, Japan which instantly killed around 74,000 people.
The survivors of the atomic bombing developed various illnesses and cancer due to the exposure to high level radiation.
Tomihisa Taue, the mayor of Nagasaki read the Peace declaration on the ceremony on 9th August 2020 and he urged the global ban on nuclear weapons.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the event along with the survivors and their family members.
During the event, the message of António Guterres, United Nations Secretary General was read by his undersecretary, Izumi Nakamitsu.
