UN Congress on Crime Prevention Begins in Japan's Kyoto

  • The 14th UN Convention on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice was held in the Japanese city Kyoto.
  • This year's event was held in a hybrid format. Key issues related to criminal justice, strategies of crime prevention and international cooperation in promoting the rule of law and preventing all forms of crime were discussed.
  • This is the first time that Japan hosted the congress since 1970.

International Women's Day

  • International Women's Day is celebrated on 8th March around the world. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights.
  • After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day in New York City on February 28, 1909, German delegates Clara Zetkin, Käte Duncker, Paula Thiede and others proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference that "a special Women's Day" be organized annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the feminist movement in about 1967. The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1977.
  • Commemoration of International Women's Day today ranges from being a public holiday in some countries to being largely ignored elsewhere. In some places, it is a day of protest; in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood.
  • The earliest Women's Day observance, called "National Woman's Day", was held on February 28, 1909, in New York City, organized by the Socialist Party of America at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel.
  • The theme for International Women's Day 2021 is 'Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world'.

India Commemorates 'Chabahar Day'

  • India commemorated 'Chabahar Day' on 4th March on the sidelines of the Maritime India Summit 2021 being held.
  • Ministers from Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan participated in the virtual event.
  • The location of the Chabahar Port has strategic advantage and high potential to provide connectivity among India, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, and boost trade. 

National Safety Day

  • National Safety Day is observed on March 4 every year to commemorate the foundation of the National Safety Council, which aims to raise awareness about safety measures that need to be undertaken to prevent accidents and mishaps.
  • The objective of the day is to renew the commitment of employees and the public to work safely and ensure the integration of a safe and sound work culture and lifestyle.
  • National Safety Day was observed for the first time in 1972, on the foundation day of the National Safety Council.
  • National Safety Council is a non-profit, self-financing and tripartite apex body at the national level.

World Wildlife Day

  • On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in its resolution UN 68/205, decided to proclaim 3 March, the international day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) on the planet raise awareness and benefits fauna and flora in 1973, as World Wildlife Day, which was proposed by Thailand, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world's wild fauna and flora.
  • World Wildlife Day in 2021 was celebrated under the theme "Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet", as a way to highlight the central role of forests, forest species and ecosystems services in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, and particularly of Indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.

Land Ports Authority of India Celebrates its 9th Foundation Day

  • The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) celebrated its 9th Foundation Day on 1st March 2021. The Land Ports Authority of India or LPAI is a statutory body working under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India is responsible for creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing border infrastructure in India. It manages several Integrated Check Posts all across Borders of India.
  • LPAI was set up by Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010 of Parliament of India on 1 March 2012.

Modi Inaugurates Second Edition of Maritime India Summit 2021

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 'Maritime India Summit 2021'.
  • Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the second edition of the summit via video conferencing.
  • Prime Minister also launched an e-book of maritime vision 2030, which is aiming to make the Indian maritime industry at par with the top global benchmark in the next 10 years.
  • The three-day summit, had ministers from eight nations, over 50 global CEOs and more than 160 speakers which include 115 international speakers from 24 nations.
  • The Maritime India Summit 2021 was organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on a virtual platform. 

Yoga Festival Begins in Rishikesh

  • The International Yoga Festival began with nearly 400 yoga enthusiasts participating in the event.
  • Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function, Uttarakhand Agriculture Minister Subodh Uniyal said that yoga activates positive energies inside human body.

World Hearing Day

  • World Hearing Day is a campaign held each year by Office of Prevention of Blindness and Deafness of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • Activities take place across the globe and an event is hosted at the World Health Organisation on March 3. The campaign's objectives are to share information and promote actions towards the prevention of hearing loss and improved hearing care.
  • The first event was held in 2007. Before 2016 it was known as International Ear Care Day. Each year, the WHO selects a theme, develops educational materials, and makes these freely available in several languages. It also coordinates and reports on events around the globe.
  • The theme of the campaign for 2021 is Hearing Care for All. 

Harsh Vardhan Inaugurates Global-Bio India 2021

  • The Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Science & Technology, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, inaugurated the second edition of Global-Bio India-2021 on March 1, 2021. This is a three-day event was organised from March 1 to March 3, 2021 under the Theme– 'Transforming Lives' along with the tag line 'Biosciences to Bio-economy'.
  • The Global-Bio India event marked the participation of more than 5000 delegates, 1000 start-ups and 200 exhibitors. It was also to be participated by the academia, researchers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, policy leaders, investors, enablers, regulators, medium & large-scale industry and other organizations to facilitate acceleration of innovation ecosystem in India. It organised 24 knowledge sessions to emphasize the role of multiple allied sectors for the growth of Biotechnology in India.
  • The Global-Bio India event was organised with the aim of providing India the recognition of an emerging Innovation Hub and the bio-manufacturing hub globally. It facilitated Biotech innovation ecosystem, Make in India and India's investments for the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative and global networking & collaborations.

World Civil Defence Day

  • World Civil Defence Day is observed on 1st March every year, all over the world. The theme of World Civil Defence Day 2021, is "Civil Defence and a first aider in every home." celebrated on 1st March 2021. This day was incorporated in 1990 by the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO).
  • The day marks the entry into force of the ICDO Constitution as an intergovernmental organisation in 1972 and has two main purposes:
  • The attention of the world public the vital importance of Civil Protection and of raising awareness of the preparedness for, and prevention and self-protection measures in the event of accidents or disasters.

Zero Discrimination Day

  • Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations. The day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all the member countries of the UN. The day was first celebrated on March 1, 2014, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27th February of that year with a major event in Beijing.
  • Zero Discrimination Day 2021 is dedicated to taking action to end the inequalities surrounding income, sex, age, health status, occupation, disability, sexual orientation, drug use, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and religion that continue to persist around the world.
  • The report mentions that inequality is growing for more than 70% of the global population. This is not only exacerbating the risk of division but also hampering economic and social development. Unfortunately, the inequalities worldwide have been deepened due to COVID-19, which is hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest.
  • Even vaccines against COVID-19 are becoming available, there is great inequality in accessing them. The report then states that many intellectuals have equated this to vaccine apartheid.

Saras Aajeevika Mela-2021 Starts at Noida Haat

  • The Saras Aajeevika Mela 2021 is underway at Noida Haat. The fair was inaugurated by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar. It will continue till 14th March. The fair remains open from 11 AM to 8 PM daily. More than 300 rural self-help groups and craftsman from 27 states are participating in the Mela which is being by the Ministry of Rural Development.
  • Addressing the gathering, Mr. Tomar said that the Ministry of Rural Development is working to include more women in Self Help Groups (SHGs). He said these SHGs played a vital role in increasing family income and improving quality of life.
