National Solidarity Day

India commemorates National Solidarity Day on October 20 to honour the soldiers who fought during the Sino-Indian War of 1962. This significant day marks the national integrity displayed by India in its conflict with China.
The Sino-Indian War, also known as the China–India War, occurred from October to November 1962. On October 20, 1962, China launched a devastating attack, resulting in India's defeat and territorial losses, notably Aksai Chin. In 1966, a committee elected by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi established October 20 as National Solidarity Day to honour soldiers and their families who sacrificed in conflicts.

World Statistics Day

World Statistics Day is celebrated is celebrated every five years on the 20th of October. The day is dedicated to create awareness about the significant role of advanced, reliable, and good quality statistics in the development of global nations. The United Nations General Assembly established World Statistics Day on October 20, 2015. The main of observing this day is to highlight the huge achievements of national statistical systems, and to foster the importance of statistics in various aspects of society.
At its 41st Session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20 October 2010 as World Statistics Day (Decision 41/109).
Acknowledging that the production of reliable, timely statistics and indicators of countries' progress is indispensable for informed policy decisions and monitoring implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, the General Assembly adopted on June 3, 2010 resolution 64/267, which officially designated October 20, 2010 as the first ever World Statistics Day.
In 2015, with resolution 96/282, the General Assembly decided to designate October 20, 2015 as the second World Statistics Day, stated un.org.

World Osteoporosis Day

World Osteoporosis Day is a global healthcare event observed every year on October 20, followed by various awareness campaigns and activities to promote the early diagnosis of osteoporosis, its treatment and preventive tips for strong bones. The campaigns are mainly focused on encouraging people to take preventative measures for their bone health to avoid any risk of osteoporosis and associated complications in the future.
This year (2023) the World Osteoporosis Day theme is 'Build Better Bones', intending the significance of leading a bone-healthy lifestyle as the foundation for strong bones and fracture-free future.
World Osteoporosis Day was launched on October 20, 1996, by the United Kingdom's National Osteoporosis Society with the collaboration of the European Commission. Since 1997, this awareness day has been organised by the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on 17 October. The day is dedicated to create awareness and promote global measures for the prevention of poverty.
According to un.org, the observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to October 17, 1987. On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. Through resolution 47/196 adopted on December 22, 1992, the General Assembly declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and invited all States to devote the Day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution.
The theme of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2023 is 'Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All'.

World Anaesthesia Day

World Anaesthesia Day is celebrated on October 16 each year to commemorate the first successful demonstration of diethyl ether anaesthesia by William T. G. Morton on October 16, 1846. This groundbreaking discovery revolutionised medicine and made surgery possible for millions of people around the world.
On October 16, 1846, Dr. William T. G. Morton made history by using ether as anaesthesia during surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. This was the first time a patient underwent surgery without feeling any pain. It marked the start of using ether for surgeries, showing it was effective and emphasising the importance of the right anaesthesia dose for safe practice. Dr. Morton is seen as a pioneer in modern anaesthesia.
The theme for World Anaesthesia Day 2023 is 'Anaesthesia and Cancer Care', highlighting the critical role of anaesthesia in cancer care and calls for the expansion of anaesthesia services to improve outcomes for cancer patients.

World Food Day

World Food Day is observed every year on October 16. The day is dedicated to create awareness about the importance of healthy diet, and highlight the challenges faced by millions of people across the globe due to lack of access to healthy food.
World Food Day was established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1979 to commemorate its establishment in 1945. Its main agenda is to overcome the food related challenges faced by millions of people worldwide.
Dr. Pal Romany, the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food, proposed the creation of World Food Day in November 1979.
The theme of World Food Day 2023 is 'Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind'. This theme was chosen to highlight the importance of water in our lives. Water is a precious resource that not only helps in producing food but also supports livelihoods.

International Day of Rural Women

International Day of Rural Women is celebrated on 15 October every year. The day is dedicated to the millions of women who live in remote, rural areas. It is to celebrate and highlight their achievements and contributions towards rural development and agriculture.
In the year 1995, the Fourth World Conference on Women was conducted in Beijing, China, and the main topic of discussion was the empowerment of women. It was when the UN suggested that 15 October could be observed as International Day of Rural Women to appreciate the contribution of rural women in agriculture, food production, and food safety.
It was on December 18, 2007 when the UN declared that October 15 would be observed annually as International Day of Rural Women worldwide. Since then many countries globally observe and celebrate the strength and achievements of rural women despite the struggles and the stereotypes.
The theme for International Day of Rural Women 2023 is 'Rural women confront the global cost-of-living crisis'.

World Students' Day

World Students' Day is celebrated on October 15 every year on the birth anniversary of the late aerospace scientist, teacher, and former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. This occasion is celebrated nationally in India every year to acknowledge the efforts of Kalam towards students and education. Kalam is fondly remembered as "People's President," and his birthday is commemorated as Students' Day.
He was known for his love and dedication toward students and his focus on promoting education. Hence, in his honour, India announced his birth date, October 15, to be observed as World Students' Day.

World Standards Day

World Standards Day, celebrated on October 14 every year, raises awareness about the need for the global standardization of products and its importance to the world economy. On this day, members of the International Electrotechnical Commission (I.E.C.), the International Telecommunication Union (I.T.U.), and the International Standards Organization (I.S.O.) pay tribute to the concerted efforts of thousands of experts around the globe who formulate the voluntary technical agreement (an agreement among countries, institutes, and people as to what a product or process is, what it should look like, and what it should do or accomplish) published as the International Standards.
October 14 was specifically chosen to mark the date, in 1946, when delegates from 25 countries first gathered in London and decided to create an international organisation focused on facilitating standardisation. Even though ISO was formed one year later, it was not until 1970 that the first World Standards Day was celebrated.
Each year, ISO, IEC and ITU determine a theme of the World Standards Day based on a seminal issue relevant to standardization. The theme of this year's (2023) celebration is – 'Shared Vision for a Better World – Standards for Sustainable Development Goals'.
