Rajnath Singh Lays Foundation Stone for Naval Communication Station in Telangana

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a new Very Low Frequency (VLF) Station of the Indian Navy. The station, located at the Damagundam Reserve Forest in Vikarabad, Telangana, will cover 2,900 acres and is expected to cost Rs. 3,200 crore.
  • The new facility is designed to enhance the Indian Navy's communication capabilities, allowing for reliable and secure transmission over long distances. The Defence Minister highlighted its importance, noting that it will serve as a strategic asset, crucial for effective command and control in challenging maritime environments.

Indian Navy to Soon Induct First Home-grown Multi-purpose Vessel 'Samarthak'

  • The first of two multi-purpose vessels being built by Indian conglomerate Larsen and Toubro (L&T) for the Indian Navy was launched at the firm's Kattupalli shipyard, near Chennai. The ceremony was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. The ship has been named 'Samarthak' which means 'supporter' and is synonymous with the multi-dimensional role that the platform is expected to perform.
  • Launching is the ceremonial event where the ship is moved from the dry dock to the water for the first time. Henceforth, the ship will undergo sea trials where its various systems and sub-systems will be tested. Usually, the ships are formally inducted (commissioned) into the Navy after several months and phases of rigorous testing at sea.

Centre Appoints S. Paramesh as New Indian Coast Guard Chief

  • The government appointed S. Paramesh as the new chief of the Indian Coast Guard. Paramesh had been serving as the acting Director General following the passing of his predecessor, D. G. Rakesh Pal, last month.
  • With over three decades of service, Paramesh has held various significant positions both on land and at sea. He is a graduate of the National Defence College in New Delhi and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. His career is marked by numerous achievements and a strong record of performance.
  • Specialised in Navigation and Direction, Paramesh has commanded major vessels like the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar and the Offshore Patrol Vessel Vishwast. His notable staff roles include Deputy Director General of Operations and Coastal Security, Principal Director of Operations at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, and Chief Staff Officer of Operations at the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters in Chennai.

Centre Approves New Missile Testing Range in Andhra Pradesh

  • The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of a new missile testing range in Nagayalanka, Andhra Pradesh. This move is aimed at strengthening the country's defence capabilities, particularly in testing tactical missile systems.
  • As per reports, the new facility will support testing of surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank missiles, and other projects under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

INS Talwar in South Africa Participate in IBSAMAR VIII Naval Exercise

  • The Indian Navy's frontline stealth frigate, "INS Talwar", docked at Simon's Town and is participating in the "eighth edition of IBSAMAR", a joint multinational maritime exercise involving the Indian, Brazilian, and South African navies. The exercise, scheduled from 06 to 18 October 2024, aims to enhance interoperability and strengthen naval ties between the three nations.
  • IBSAMAR VIII focuses on Blue Water Naval Warfare, including surface and anti-air warfare drills. The exercise underscores the commitment of the participating nations to a peaceful maritime domain and the promotion of a secure maritime environment.
  • The "harbour phase" of IBSAMAR VIII will involve a series of professional engagements, including damage control and firefighting drills, aviation safety lectures, joint diving operations, and interactive sessions on ocean governance. There will also be cross-deck visits, sports interactions, and special forces training, fostering close bonds and improving operational collaboration between the navies.

Army Commanders' Conference in Sikkim: Focus on Security amid China Tensions

  • The Second Army Commanders' Conference of 2024 was held in October in a hybrid format at a forward location in Gangtok, Sikkim. This significant gathering united senior leaders of the Indian Army and assessed the overall security situation, brainstormed conceptual issues, and strategised for future challenges.
  • The conference is being held in two phases. The first phase ran from October 10-11, 2024, in Gangtok, while the second phase is scheduled for October 28-29, 2024, in Delhi.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered the keynote address at the Gangtok venue, where he outlined emerging security challenges facing the nation and the Army's strategic responses.
