India, Australia Firm Up Air-to-Air Refuelling Arrangement for Military Aircraft

  • India and Australia firmed up an arrangement to enable the air forces of the two countries to carry out air-to-air refuelling, a move expected to increase the Indian military's reach in the Indo-Pacific region. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Australian counterpart Pat Conroy MP announced the arrangement at a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a regional security conclave in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos.
  • Under the arrangement, the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) air-to-air refuelling aircraft -- the KC-30A multi-role tanker transport -- will be able to refuel Indian military planes.

Bharat NCX 2024 Fortifying India's Cyber Defence

  • The Bharat National Cyber Security Exercise (Bharat NCX 2024), a landmark initiative to fortify India's cybersecurity resilience, was inaugurated in New Delhi at a high-profile ceremony organised by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) in collaboration with Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU). The 12-day exercise, which concludes on November 29, is a critical step in preparing India's cybersecurity professionals and leadership to tackle evolving threats with advanced cyber defence, incident response capabilities, and strategic decision-making.

Indian Army Successfully Concludes Multi Agency Disaster Relief Exercise 'Sanyukt Vimochan 2024'

  • The Indian Army successfully conducted the Multilateral Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, 'Sanyukt Vimochan 2024'. General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff attended this significant event which showcased India's disaster response readiness.
  • The exercise conducted by the Konark Corps of Southern Command of Indian Army, was conducted over two days November 18 to 19, 2024 at Ahmedabad and Porbandar, Gujarat. The inaugural event of the exercise at Ahmedabad featured a Table Top Exercise, focusing on the theme of 'Cyclone in Coastal Region of Gujarat'. Representatives from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), Meteorological Department and FICCI attended the event along with Indian Armed Forces officials. The second day witnessed Multi-Agency Capability Demonstration held at Chowpatty Beach at Porbandar on 19 November 24.

Japan Agrees to Provide its Integrated Antenna System, UNICORN, to the Indian Naval Ships

  • A Memorandum of Implementation was signed at the Embassy of India, Tokyo between Govt of India and Govt of Japan, for co-development of UNICORN mast for fitment onboard Ships of Indian Navy.
  • The MOI was signed and exchanged between the Ambassador of India to Japan, H.E. Sibi George and Mr. Ishikawa Takeshi, Commissioner of Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) under Japan MoD in a ceremony at Tokyo.
  • The Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) is a mast with Integrated Communication systems which will help improve the stealth characteristics of Naval Platforms.
  • The Indian Navy is pursuing the induction of these advanced systems which will be co-developed by Bharat Electronics Limited in India with Japanese collaboration.
  • When implemented, this would be the first case of co-development / co-production of Defence Equipment between India and Japan.

  • The Indian Army showcased its aerial might with a remarkable 27-helicopter Elephant Walk in Arunachal Pradesh near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as part of the Armed Forces Exercise Poorvi Prahar 2024. The exercise underscored the Army's readiness and capability to deploy its aviation assets in high-altitude areas critical to India's strategic interests.

Indonesia and Australia Hold joint Military Drills

  • The Indonesian and Australian militaries held joint combat drills off Indonesia's main island of Java with about 2,000 troops training in air, maritime, amphibious and land operations.
  • They participated in a live-fire exercise near Banongan beach of East Java's Situbondo district with tanks, artillery, infantry and attack helicopters, a joint landing operation and a non-combat evacuation used for a disaster.
  • The four-day Keris Woomera 2024 exercise highlighted the cooperation between the countries strengthened by the signing of the Australia-Indonesia Defense Cooperation Agreement.

Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise 'Sea Vigil-24'

  • The Indian Navy will conduct the fourth edition of the pan-India coastal defence exercise, 'Sea Vigil-24', from November 20 to 21, to test the readiness of the coastal security, and will see the involvement of six ministries and 21 organisations and agencies.
  • The exercise will focus on strengthening the security of coastal assets like ports, oil rigs, single-point moorings, cable landing points and critical coastal infrastructure, including the coastal population. This year, the participation by other services (Indian Army and Indian Air Force) and the planned deployment of a large number of ships and aircraft have enhanced the tempo of the exercise.
  • Originally conceptualised in 2018, Sea Vigil was designed to validate and enhance measures to bolster coastal defence in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Gyan Shakti: South Western Command's New Think Tank in Jaipur

  • To strengthen Rajasthan's defence industrial base, the Army's Jaipur-based South Western Command established a think tank named 'Gyan Shakti'. The initiative aims to provide a platform for discussions and collaboration between the armed forces, industry, state government, and academia on matters related to defence and security at both regional and national levels.

MHA Greenlights CISF's First All-Women Unit

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved the creation of the Central Industrial Security Force's (CISF) first-ever all-women battalion. This historic move aims to promote gender equality and inspire more women to contribute to the CISF's mission of securing the nation's strategic assets.
  • This move encourages women to join the CISF's mission to protect India's strategic assets.
  • The battalion will undergo specialised training to perform various roles, including VIP security, airport security, and Delhi Metro duties.
  • CISF is a part of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and primarily provides security to government institutions and vital installations.
  • Over time, the force has diversified to handle VIP security, airport security, and other specialized duties.
  • CISF was set up on March 10, 1969, under an Act of the Parliament of India with an initial strength of 2,800 personnel.
  • It became an armed force of the Republic of India on June 15, 1983, following a separate Act of Parliament.

BDL Signs MoU with Russia's Rosoboronexport for Collaboration on Pantsir Air Defence Systems

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia's Rosoboronexport (ROE) to collaborate on the Pantsir air defence missile-gun systems.
  • The agreement was signed by BDL's Chairman and Managing Director, A. Madhavarao (Retd), and Kovalenko German, Deputy Director General of the Naval Department at ROE, during the 5th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) subgroup meeting in Goa. The Pantsir-S1 system is a mobile, short-range air defence system equipped with both missile and gun capabilities.

DRDO's Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile Passes Maiden Flight Test

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of its Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM), the Ministry of Defence announced.
  • The maiden flight took off from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
  • During the test, all sub-systems performed as per expectation and met the primary mission objectives. The missile performance was monitored by several range sensors like Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System and telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path.
