Pankaj Kumar Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer, took over as the new director general (DG) of the Border Security Force while his batch-mate Sanjay Arora assumed charge of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Singh, from the Rajasthan cadre of the IPS, has been serving as the special DG of the country's largest border guarding force that mans over 6,300 km of Indian boundary with Pakistan and Bangladesh and has about 2.65 lakh personnel.
Arora, who was serving as the special DG in the CRPF till now, will head the about 90,000 personnel strong mountain-warfare trained ITBP.
Indian Navy's First Exercise with Algerian Navy
The navies of India and Algeria carried out a maiden naval exercise off the Algerian coast, in reflection of growing maritime cooperation between the two sides.
Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Tabar and Algerian naval ship ANS Ezzadjer were part of the maritime partnership exercise that took place.
The exercise enabled the two navies to understand the concept of operations followed by each other, enhanced interoperability and opened the possibility of increasing interaction and collaboration in the future.

India and Germany Conduct Joint Maritime Exercise in Gulf of Aden
Navies of India and Germany carried out a joint exercise, which included helicopter landings and search and seizure operations, in Gulf of Aden near Yemen. The Indian Navy's frigate 'Trikand' exercised with German frigate 'Bayern' in the Gulf of Aden.
The exercise included cross deck helo (helicopter) landings and visit board search and seizure operations. INS Trikand is deployed in the Gulf of Aden region for anti-piracy patrol.
The exercise between Trikand and Bayern on the latter's Indian Ocean leg of Indo-Pacific Deployment 2021 enhanced interoperability and facilitated exchange of best practices between partner navies in maritime domain.
Taiwan's Makes Last-minute Request for Seahawk Helos
Taiwan's government is seeking funding for a long-delayed plan to acquire shipboard anti-submarine helicopters from the United States, as it announces an increased defense budget for the forthcoming fiscal year.
As per reports, the Ministry of National Defense is aiming in the 11th hour to include funding to buy Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.
The news comes as Taiwan's government approved a $16.89 billion defense budget for the next fiscal year, which runs from January 1 to December 31, 2022. The figure is a 4 per cent increase from the previous fiscal year.
Taiwan wants to acquire up to 10 MH-60Rs spread over a number of years, and will also include weapons such as Mk 54 torpedoes, Hellfire air-to-surface missiles and guns.

Mahindra Defence Systems Bags Contract from Indian Navy
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd said that group firm, Mahindra Defence Systems Limited (MDS) has bagged a contract worth Rs. 1,349.95 crore for manufacturing of Integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare Defence Suite (IADS) for modern warships of Indian Navy from the Indian government.
Competitive bids from Indian companies were invited by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through open tender wherein the systems fielded were put through detailed trials at sea to prove their capability.
Mahindra Defence would be supplying 14 IADS systems for the Indian Navy warships.
IADS is high-end underwater equipment that uses the latest technology along with a complex array of sensors, designed to detect and protect warships from underwater threats.
India and Kazakhstan Joint Training Exercise 'KAZIND-21'
India and Kazakhstan kicked off a 13-day military exercise with a focus on counter-terror operations in mountainous terrain. The "KAZIND-21" exercise is being conducted at a Kazakh training node in Aisha Bibi in Kazakhstan from August 30 to September 11.
The exercise provides an opportunity to the Armed Forces of India & Kazakhstan to train for counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operation in the mountainous, rural scenario under UN mandate.
From the Indian side, personnel from the Bihar regiment of the Indian Army are participating in the joint exercise. The Kazakhstan army is represented by a company group.

NSG Commandos Undertake Counter-terrorist Drills
Multiple cities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and the National Capital Region hosted synchronised commando drills as part of a national mock exercise being carried out by the counter-terrorist force National Security Guard (NSG) to check its response time and reaction to hostage and hijack-like situations.
The third edition of the week-long annual exercise called 'Gandiv' was launched at these locations by the NSG from August 22 and concluded on August 28.
Gandiv was the name of Arjuna's bow in Mahabharata.
The exercise covered potential targets in the NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat depicting multiple cities, multiple targets scenario cumulatively covering about 30-35 targets.
China, Pakistan, Thailand and Mongolia to Hold Military Exercise
The militaries of China, Pakistan, Mongolia and Thailand will take part in a multinational peacekeeping exercise to be organised by the People's Liberation Army in the country's central Henan province next month.
The four countries will take part in the first multinational peacekeeping live exercise "Shared Destiny-2021" at the combined-arms tactical training base of the PLA in Henan's Queshan County from September 6 to 15.
All the four countries will dispatch more than 1,000 troops to participate in the drills, involving units of infantry, fast response, security, helicopter, engineering, transportation and medical services.
The scenario of the exercise is joint operations of multinational peacekeeping forces and the exercise will be held in a close-to-real battlefield environment set in accordance with the international, professional and realistic combat standards.

Rajnath Singh to Commission Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Vessel Vigraha
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission offshore patrol vessel Vigraha of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in Chennai.
The ship will be based in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and operate on the eastern seaboard under the operational and administrative control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).
The 98-meter vessel, with a complement of 11 officers and 110 sailors, has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro Ship Building Limited.
The vessel is fitted with advanced technology radars, navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery capable of operating in tropical sea conditions.
25th Malabar Exercise
Indian Navy participated in the sea phase of Exercise Malabar in August 2021 along with the US Navy (USN), Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The 25th edition of ex-Malabar was hosted by the US Navy in the Western Pacific.
Malabar Exercise commenced in 1992 between India and the United States.
In 2015, the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) joined Malabar as a permanent member.
The 2020 edition witnessed the participation of the Royal Australian Navy.
The Indian Navy's participation includes INS Shivalik and INS Kadmatt and P8I patrol aircraft. The US Navy was represented by USS Barry, USNS Rappahannock, USNS Big Horn and P8A patrol aircraft.
The Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force was represented by JS Kaga, Murasame and Shiranui, in addition to a submarine and P1 patrol aircraft. The Royal Australian Navy was represented by HMAS Warramunga.
The Malabar-21 witnessed complex exercises including anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare drill, and other manoeuvres and tactical exercises.
