Indo-Nepal Joint Military Exercise Surya Kiran-XV

  • The 15th India-Nepal joint military exercise Surya Kiran began in the Himalayan border town of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, India. The previous edition of the Exercise Surya Kiran was conducted in Nepal in 2019. The exercise was called off in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The approximately 48-hour exercise will see the participation of at least an infantry battalion from each country's national army. The purpose of the drills is to improve inter-operability with regard to counter-insurgency operations in mountainous terrain. The exercise will also feature academic discussions on subjects ranging from humanitarian disaster relief to high altitude and jungle warfare.

Army to Launch UAV-based Digital Intelligence System

  • To overcome the functional limitations of ground-based electronic intelligence gathering equipment, the Army has launched a project to develop an airborne system that can be mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
  • Operating height is of great importance as the range and capability of electronic signal capturing equipment, when placed on an elevated platform, enhances manifold. Termed as an elevated platform for gathering intelligence through electronic support measures (ESM), the project is being executed by the Army's Military College of Telecommunication Engineering at Mhow, near Indore. The ESM gather intelligence through passive "listening" to radio transmissions or electromagnetic radiations and the data so generated can be used to assess the enemy's activity.

New Security Partnership for Indo-Pacific

  • US President Joe Biden administration has announced a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific. Security partnership was done between Australia, United Kingdom and United States.
  • This security grouping called AUKUS will focus towards advancing strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Officials noted that the trilateral grouping was security focused and is different but complementary to arrangements like the Quad.
  • The central feature of this partnership comprises of a trilateral 18-month effort in order to help Australia in acquiring nuclear powered submarines which are quieter, more capable as compared to their conventional counterparts.
  • AUKUS will also involve a new architecture of meeting and engagements between three countries.
  • It also involves the cooperation across emerging technologies like AI, quantum technologies as well as undersea capabilities.

Defence Ministry Constitutes High Level Expert Committee to Review NCC

  • The Ministry of Defence has constituted a High-Level Expert Committee, for a comprehensive review of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Former Member of Parliament (MP) Baijayant Panda is the Chairperson of the Committee. The 15-member committee also includes cricketer MS Dhoni and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra as members.
  • Terms of Reference of the Committee:
  • Suggest measures to empower NCC cadets to contribute more effectively towards nation building
  • Propose ways for gainful engagement of NCC Alumni for the betterment of the organisation
  • Recommend best practices of similar international youth organisations for inclusion in the NCC curriculum.
  • The NCC is the largest uniformed organisation that aims at developing character, discipline, a secular outlook and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens. It also aims to create a pool of organised, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life.

Navy Gives on Lease Passenger Variant Dornier Aircraft to Mauritius

  • The Navy has handed over a Passenger Variant Dornier (PVD) aircraft on lease to the Maritime Air Squadron of the National Coast Guard, Mauritius.
  • The aircraft was presented to the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) at an official ceremony.
  • Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner of India to Maldives Nandini K. Singla observed that MSN 4059 had been leased to the MPF by the Indian Navy on gratis basis to support the current increased load of air operations.

South Korea Carries out its First Underwater-launched Missile Test

  • South Korea has carried out its first underwater-launched missile test, hours after rival North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea.
  • President Moon observed the test of a domestically built submarine-launched ballistic missile.
  • The missile fired from a 3,000-tonne-class submarine flew a previously set distance before hitting a designated target.

India Takes Part in SCO Joint Military Exercise in Russia

  • India is participating in the sixth edition of multinational military exercise organised by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Russia's Oregon.
  • The Indian military contingent comprising an all arms combined force of 200 personnel including 38 personnel from the Indian Air Force is participating in the exercise Peaceful Mission -2021. The Indian contingent was inducted to the exercise area by two IL-76 aircrafts.
  • The aim of the exercise is to foster close relations between SCO member states and to enhance abilities of the military leaders to command multi-national military contingents.
  • The sixth edition of the military exercise 'Peaceful Mission-2021' is being hosted by Russia in the Orenburg region.
  • The SCO is an economic and security bloc in which India and Pakistan were admitted as full members in 2017. Its founding members included China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Australia to Buy U.S. Nuclear Submarines

  • As per report, Australia decided to invest in U.S. nuclear-powered submarines and dump its contract with France to build diesel-electric submarines because of a changed strategic environment.
  • President Joe Biden announced a new U.S. security alliance with Australia and Britain that would develop an Australian nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
  • As a result, Australia notified France that it would end its contract with state majority-owned DCNS to build 12 of the world's largest conventional submarines. Australia has spent 2.4 billion Australian dollars ($1.8 billion) on the project since the French won the contract in 2016.

India to Test Agni-V with Tech to Deliver Multiple Nukes to Different Targets

  • India is set to conduct the first user trial of nuke capable intercontinental-range ballistic missile (ICBM) Agni-V signalling its early induction in the armed forces. Elaborate preparation has started at a defence facility off Odisha coast for the mission by the Strategic Forces Command of Indian Army. As per the schedule the 5,000 km range missile is likely to be flight-tested on September 23.
  • Developed by DRDO, the missile is capable of hitting targets in all Asian countries and parts of Africa and Europe. With a wiring of around seven-km, the 17-metre long, 2-metre wide, three-stage, solid-fuelled missile can carry a payload of 1.5 tonne and weighs around 50 tonne. India is the eighth country to have intercontinental ballistic missiles after the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Israel and North Korea.
