Indian Navy Gets Two more Poseidon 8I Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft

  • The Indian Navy inducted two more Poseidon 8I maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, in a boost to its surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean in the face of China's increasing forays into the region.
  • The two aircraft were manufactured by US aerospace major Boeing.
  • The P-8I, based on the Boeing next-generation 737 commercial airplanes, is a variant of the P-8A Poseidon used by the US Navy.

Five World Powers Issue Pledge to Prevent Nuclear War

  • Five of the world's nuclear powers pledged to prevent the proliferation of nuclear arms and have also said that nuclear war is not an option.
  • In a rare statement issued jointly, China, France, Russia, the UK and the US said: "We believe strongly that the further spread of such weapons must be prevented."
  • There was also affirmation that nuclear weapons — for as long as they continue to exist — should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war.
  • The permanent five members of the United Nations Security Council (P5) agreed "to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control."
  • The joint pledge was issued ahead of what was to be the latest review of the Treaty of the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

  • Director General VS Pathania took over as the 24th Chief of the Indian Coast Guard. A qualified helicopter pilot, the top official of India's Coast Guard has held several key roles afloat and ashore in a career spanning 36 years.
  • The Flag Officer has commanded all classes of Coast Guard ships such as Inshore Patrol Vessel 'Ranijindan', Offshore Patrol Vessel 'Vigraha' and Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel 'Sarang'.

China Transfers Secondhand Submarine to Myanmar

  • China has transferred a former People's Liberation Army Navy diesel-electric attack submarine to Myanmar, marking the first transfer of such equipment between the two countries.
  • The commissioning of the Type 035 or Ming-class submarine, which is named the UMS Minye Kyaw Htin, brings the Southeast Asian nation's fleet to two boats. In March 2020, Myanmar took delivery of a Russian-built Project 877 Kilo-class boat from India.
  • The date coincided with the 74th anniversary of the navy and, in addition to the submarine, also saw the induction of the Inlay-class Offshore Patrol Vessel UMS Inwa, two 18-meter riverine fast attack craft and four 20m riverine patrol boats.

ITBP DG Sanjay Arora to Hold SSB Additional Charge

  • ITBP director general Sanjay Arora will hold the additional charge of another border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) as the latter's chief Kumar Rajesh Chandra is set to retire on December 31. Arora, a 1988-batch officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, was appointed the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) DG in August and he took charge of the India-China LAC guarding force on September 1. The SSB is primarily tasked to guard unfenced Indian borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

India, Philippines Set to Conclude BrahMos Missile Deal

  • As per reports, India and the Philippines are set to formally seal a government-to-government BrahMos deal soon, capping years of negotiations for the supply of a batch of the supersonic cruise missiles for the Philippine navy.
  • The procurement is expected to signal a major upswing in India's strategic ties with the Philippines which has been focusing on ramping up its naval prowess in the face of its lingering friction with China in the South China Sea.
