Army Launches Messaging Application

  • The Indian Army launched a new messaging application called ASIGMA for in-house communication. ASIGMA, which stands for Army Secure IndiGeneous Messaging Application, has been developed entirely in-house by a team of officers of the Corps of Signals.
  • The new application is being deployed on the Army's internal network as a replacement of Army Wide Area Network (AWAN) messaging application which has been in service for the past 15 years.
  • ASIGMA has been fielded on Army-owned hardware and lends itself to lifetime support with future upgrades.

Tri-service Exercise Carried Out in Nicobar Islands

  • A multi-domain tri-service exercise is currently in progress in the strategically important Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • As part of the exercise, troops of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force were mobilised for an amphibious landing, in close co-ordination with the para drop of airborne troops.
  • The rapid response capability of Shatrujeet Brigade was validated wherein the paratroopers, who had moved from the mainland, executed an airborne drop in the island territory of Andamans in a realistic tactical setting under the overall command and control of Andaman and Nicobar Command, the only joint-service operational command of the defence forces of the India.

India Ready to Assist Countries in Bay of Bengal Region

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India will assist countries in the Bay of Bengal region in all possible ways and develop measures for regional cooperation in disaster relief.
  • Singh was speaking at PANEX-21, a multi-agency exercise of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries. The exercise was conducted at the College of Military Engineering in Pune.
  • The multinational exercise aimed to foster jointness and develop capabilities in disaster management aspects for the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) nations.
  • The BIMSTEC regional organisation comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, besides India.

India Successfully Tests 'Pralay' Missile off Odisha Coast

  • India successfully test-fired short-range surface to surface-guided ballistic missile 'Pralay' off the Odisha coast.
  • The solid-fuel, battlefield missile developed by Defence Research Development Organisation is based on Prithvi Defence Vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme.
  • The missile, launched from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island, met all the mission objectives.
  • 'Pralay' is a 350-500 km short-range, surface-to-surface missile with a payload capacity of 500-1,000 kg.

Atul Dinkar Rane Appointed as BrahMos Aerospace Chief

  • Atul Dinkar Rane was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the BrahMos Aerospace Limited that manufactures the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.
  • Rane is renowned for his decades of sustained R&D contributions in the indigenous design and development of mission critical Onboard Computers (OBC), hardware in loop simulation studies, systems analysis, development of mission software and avionics technologies for defence applications.
  • His pioneering contributions and techno-managerial leadership has been transformative for the successful development and induction of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile into Armed Forces.
  • He joined DRDO in the year 1987 and started his initial career at Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) as System Manager and carried out simulation studies and established modular real-time simulation test mechanisms for the indigenously developed Surface to Air Akash Missile System.

India Deploys First S-400 air Defence System in Punjab Sector

  • In a major boost to the country's air defence capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is deploying the first squadron of the S-400 air defence missile system in the Punjab sector.
  • The first squadron is being deployed in the Punjab sector. The batteries of the first squadron would be capable of taking care of aerial threats from both Pakistan and China.
  • Parts of the Russian missile system had started reaching India earlier this month and the unit is expected to be operationalized in the next few weeks.
  • The S-400 air defence system was contracted for by India in a deal worth around Rs. 35,000 crore and five squadrons would be provided to India for tacking air threats from up to 400 km.

Rear Admiral Sanjay Bhalla is Eastern Fleet Chief

  • Rear Admiral Sanjay Bhalla took over the command of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy. The change of guard took place at a ceremony at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
  • With this, the top brass of the Eastern Command stands changed over the past three weeks.
  • Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta took over as the Eastern Naval Commander on December 1 and Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan had assumed charge as the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command on December 16.
  • Rear Admiral Bhalla was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 1989 and is a specialist in communication and electronic warfare. He is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai, and Royal College of Defence Studies, London.

'Agni P', New Generation Ballistic Missile, Successfully test-fired by DRDO

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested the new generation nuclear capable ballistic missile 'Agni P' from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
  • Various telemetry, radar, electro-optical stations and down range ships positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile trajectory and parameters.
  • This is noteworthy that the 'Agni P' is a two-stage canisterised solid-propellant ballistic missile with dual redundant navigation and guidance system.

Indian Navy Conducts First Sea trials for Mormugao

  • The Indian Navy conducted the first sea trials for Indian Navy's indigenously built stealth destroyer called Mormugao, in the Arabian Sea.
  • The maiden sea voyage of the warship has been built under the project P-15B.
  • Its development coincides with the 60th anniversary of liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule.
  • Mormugao is the second indigenous stealth destroyer that is being built under Project P-15B.
  • It is likely to be commissioned in mid-2022.
