Taiwan Scraps Deal to Buy US Anti-submarine Helicopters

  • Taiwan opted out of purchasing anti-submarine helicopters from the United States because they are too expensive.
  • The island was planning to buy up to 12 Seahawk choppers but the deal has been scrapped as Taipei prioritises lower cost, more mobile weaponry to counter any threat from China.

Coast Guard's Second Air Squadron

  • The second air squadron of the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned. This squadron is equipped with the indigenously designed as well as developed advanced light helicopter (ALH) MK-III.
  • The squadron was commissioned at the Coast Guard Air Enclave, Nedumbassery, Kochi. Director-General V. S. Pathania commissioned the 845 squadron (CG) in Kochi.
  • Commandant Kunal Naik is leading this squadron comprising 35 men and 9 officers.
  • The squadron was commissioned to improve the country's self-reliance in the area of long-range maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations. This commission is in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" plan. So far 12 ALH MK-III helicopters have been inducted into the Indian Coast Guard with the latest four helicopters being positioned in Kochi with the aim of covering the entire coast of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.

HM Amit Shah Inaugurates BSF's Floating Border Outposts at Hingalganj in West Bengal

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated floating border outposts (BOP) of BSF at Hingalganj in West Bengal.He also flagged off a boat ambulance to provide medical assistance in this inaccessible areas. Three floating BOPs Sutlej, Kaveri, and Narmada were dedicated to the nation. These BOPs are equipped with all modern facilities.
  • During the visit to Haridaspur BOP at the Indo-Bangladesh border, Amit Shah had lunch with BSF troops at Haridaspur BOP at the Indo-Bangladesh border. He also interacted with senior BSF officials during the occasion.

Successful Trials of India-Made Advanced Artillery Gun System Carried Out

  • The trials of the 155mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) were completed at the Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR) by DRDO in May 2022. The ATAGS is an indigenous towed artillery gun system project undertaken in mission mode by the DRDO as a part of the artillery modernisation programme of the Indian Army.
  • Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, DPSUs and private industries on the successful conduction of trials of the ATAGS and called it a shining example of AatmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.

Indian Coast Guard Commissions its Second ALH Mk III Squadron in Kochi

  • Coast Guard commissioned its second Air Squadron, 845 Squadron (CG), at the Coast Guard Air Enclave at Nedumbassery in Kochi.
  • The new Air Squadron, commissioned by Coast Guard Director General V S Pathania, is equipped with the indigenously developed Advanced Mark III (ALH Mark III) helicopters.
  • The commissioning marks a tremendous leap towards self-reliance in the field of search and rescue operations and long-range maritime surveillance. Four helicopters have been positioned in Kochi to cover the entire coast of Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. The Squadron, led by Commandant Kunal Naik has nine officers and 35 men.

France's Naval Group Pulls Out of India's P-75I Submarine Project ahead of PM Modi's visit

  • French company Naval Group decided to pull out of India's P-75I project, under which six conventional submarines are to be domestically built for the Indian Navy, due to conditions mentioned in the request for proposal (RFP) related to air independent propulsion (AIP) system. AIP system allows a conventional submarine to stay submerged in water at higher speeds for a longer period of time.
  • Naval Group was ready to offer the best in class and adapted solution for Indian Navy's P-75I project, being fully in line with Aatma Nirbhar Bharat principle. However, the present RFP requires that the fuel cell AIP (air independent propulsion) be sea proven but the French Navy does not use such propulsion system.

NATO Exercises along its Eastern Flank

  • Military exercises involving thousands of NATO soldiers is being held. They were regular exercises aimed at improving the security of the alliance's eastern flank but come this year with Russia's war against Ukraine raging nearby. Due to those circumstances, Poland's military appealed to the public not to publish information or photos of the columns of military vehicles MOVING through the country. It warned that "ill-considered activity" could harm the alliance's security.
  • 18,000 soldiers from over 20 countries were taking part in the Defender Europe 2022 and Swift Response 2022 exercises that are taking place in Poland and eight other countries.
