IAF, Navy Tie Up with DRDO to Acquire CHAFF to Shield Warships, Fighter Aircraft
The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy tied up with the Defence Research Development Organisation to get the CHAFF technology, which protects the warship from an anti-ship missile during hostilities. India is now the second country after the United States to develop this ability, a major Aatmanirbhar push in the field of defence.
CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircrafts or naval ships from enemy radar-guided missile during war. The significance of this technology lies in the fact that very less quantity of CHAFF material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy's missiles to ensure safety of the fighter aircraft or naval ships.
Developed by the DRDO, the technology includes all three variants of CHAFF rockets namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR), and have been inducted in the Indian Navy after successful user trials.

The MoU aims to engage M/s L&T as a Knowledge Partner for nurturing technologies in various domains, for induction into the Indian Navy. Further, the MoU aims to bring together IN and L&T to collaborate on innovative and pioneering projects related to contemporary and emerging technologies of mutual interest.
The MoU encompasses all the aspects related to Electrical, Weapon, Engineering, Machinery and Control, and Hull of a Naval Warship.

Russia Successfully Test-fires Sarmat Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
Russia successfully test-launched a Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile at a time when Moscow-West tensions have sharply escalated over Ukraine. The missile was fired from a silo at 15:12 Moscow Time at the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome in northwest Russia's Arkhangelsk region.
After the test, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the new missile complex has "the highest tactical and technical characteristics and is able to overcome all modern means of anti-missile defense".
Vagsheer, the Lst of Six Submarines under Project 75, Launched
The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders launched INS Vagsheer, the last of the six submarines under Project 75. The submarine was launched by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar. Post-launch, the submarine will undergo a comprehensive and rigorous set of tests and trials for more than a year to ensure that it is fully combat-worthy.
The new submarine is the latest incarnation of its earlier version, as according to naval parlance a ship never ceases to exist. Even after a ship/submarine is decommissioned, a new ship/submarine replaces the old one with the same name.

National Level Pollution Response Exercise 'NATPOLREX-VIII' of Indian Coast Guard
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) kicked off the 8th edition of the two-day National Level Pollution Response Exercise, 'NATPOLREX-VIII', on April 19, 2022, off Mormugao harbour, Goa. The marine spill preparedness exercise was inaugurated by Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar. The exercise is being attended by more than 85 participants from 50 agencies, including 29 observers from 22 friendly foreign countries and international organisations and two Coast Guard ships from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The objective of NATPOLREX-VIII is to enhance the preparedness and response capability of all the stakeholders in combating marine spills.
IAF Successfully Test-fires BrahMos Missile from Su30-MkI Fighter Jet
The Indian Air Force, in coordination with the Indian Navy successfully tested a BrahMos missile from a Su30-MkI aircraft on the Eastern seaboard. The BrahMos missile provides the IAF with a much-desired capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target at sea or land with pinpoint accuracy by day or night and in all weather conditions.
The capability of the missile coupled with the high performance of the Su-30MKI aircraft gives the IAF a strategic reach and allows it to dominate the battlefields over land and sea.

Israel Becomes the First Country to Successfully Shoot Down Drones With 'Iron Beam' Laser Interce...
Israel successfully tested a new laser missile-defence system 'Iron Beam' which can destroy any airborne object including drones. Iron Beam is the world's first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser beam to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets, mortars, long-range missiles, anti-tank missiles etc. The Iron Beam which is developed by the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is using a directed-energy weapon system and can go a long way in providing aerial defence.
Iron Beam works on a fibre laser system to destroy any airborne object. Iron Dome defense system was a great success, with a 90% interception rate against incoming rocket fire.
Army Commanders' Conference Begins in New Delhi
The conference is an institutional platform for conceptual-level deliberations, culminating in making important policy decisions for the Indian Army. During the five-day conference, the senior leadership of the Indian Army will review the operational situation along the active borders, assess threats in the entire spectrum of conflict and undertake analysis of capability voids to further focus on capability development and operational preparedness plans.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to interact with the senior commanders and address the Conference on 21st April.
Various agenda points sponsored by regional commands will be deliberated upon by the senior commanders apart from proposals concerning improving works, financial management, introducing e-vehicles, and digitisation in the Indian Army.
Lt. Gen Manoj Pande Appointed Next Army Chief
Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Manoj Pande was appointed as the 29th Chief of Army Staff, becoming the first officer from the Corps of Engineers and also the first from combat support arms - the combat arms being infantry, artillery and armoured - to head the 1.3 million Army. He will take over on April 30 when the incumbent Gen Manoj Naravane is set to retire.
Lt Gen Pande was commissioned in December 1982 into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers).
Appointment is still awaited for the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) which has fallen vacant following the untimely demise of the country's first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat in a chopper crash in December 2021. Gen Naravane is presently the seniormost and front runner for the post.
The tenure of Service Chiefs is 62 years of age or three years whichever is earlier while the age limit for the CDS is 65 years of age with no fixed tenure defined.
