INS Vikrant Receives Original Bell as Gift

  •  India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant received a unique gift in form of its original bell, which was installed on the first carrier of the same name commissioned in 1961.
  • The original bell was gifted by retired Vice Chief of Navy Staff Vice Admiral S.N. Ghormade to the commanding officer of the INS Vikrant.
  • The bell was placed on the first INS Vikrant in 1961 after India bought a British-origin aircraft carrier HMS Hercules and gave it an Indian name.

Tri-service Drill in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

  • The 50th Parachute Brigade (Shatrujeet Brigade) of the Army participated in a major multi-domain exercise with the Andaman Nicobar Command (ANC) rehearsed its rapid reaction capabilities on the strategically located Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The high-voltage exercise, carried out in conjunction with the Indian Air Force and Navy, tested the jointmanship and interoperability among special forces of the tri-services while reacting to different plans and contingencies in realistic tactical settings.

TVS SCS Wins UK Defence Ministry Contract for Supplying Land Rover Spares

  • TVS Supply Chain Solutions (TVS SCS), an integrated supply chain solutions provider, won a UK government contract for providing spares and accessories for the Land Rover Wolf, a military vehicle.
  • The contract is from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), acting through its agent, Babcock Land Defence. This two-plus one-year agreement will see TVS SCS use its accredited inventory management, procurement and supply chain expertise to ensure the optimum availability of spares for the legacy vehicle platform.
  • This business win is a testament to TVS SCS' strong position in providing supply chain capability to support several of the UK MOD's vehicle platforms.

India US to Sign Deal for Missiles, Torpedoes for Indian Navy

  • India is going to sign a weapons deal with the United States soon to buy American weapons, including the Hellfire missiles and Mark 54 anti-submarine torpedoes, in a step towards strengthening their military hardware cooperation. These weapons are going to be fitted on the 24 MH-60 helicopters that are going to be fully inducted into the Navy in the near future.
  • The proposal for buying the weapons package for the MH-60 Romeo choppers is being moved forward briskly and the deal is expected to be signed sooner. As per reports, the deal would be inked under the Foreign Military Sales route.

Army to Induct Women in Artillery Regiment

  • The Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande announced that the Army is going to commission women officers in the Regiment of Artillery. The Army chief talked about the move during the Chief of Army Staff Annual Press Conference 2023 in January.
  • Artillery is a combat support arm of the Army and is the largest in size after the Infantry. The Artillery Regiments comprise various calibres of guns, surface to surface missiles, tracked guns, mortars and unmanned aerial platforms.
  • The regiments and Corps of the Army are divided into Arms and Services. The Arms include Infantry, Armoured Corps, Artillery, Engineers, Signals, Army Air Defence, Army Aviation Corps and Military Intelligence. With the latest government decision, women will now serve in all arms barring Infantry and Armoured Corps, which are considered to be fighting arms.
  • In addition, woman officers also serve in Services which include Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), Army Education Corps (AEC), Judge Advocate General Branch (JAG Br), Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC). They also serve as nursing officers in Military Nursing Service.

India, US to Begin Major Air Combat Exercise in Kalaikunda, West Bengal

  • The Indian Air Force is all set to kick off exercises with the US Air Force. The exercise will be conducted at the Kalaikunda air base in West Bengal. The exercise is known as the 'Cope India' exercise.
  • The exercise will be conducted from April 10 - April 21. It will further enhance the operational capability and interoperability between the two forces. Tokyo will significantly act as an observer in this exercise, it will witness "air combat and mobility elements" operating from multiple airbases like Kalaikunda, Panagarh, Agra and Hindon.
  • The Indian Air Force will be fielding the French-Origin Rafel fighter jets, Russian Sukhoi-Su 30 MKI and indigenous Tejas fighter jets as well as AEW&C (Airborne warning and control systems), C17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft and IL-78 mid-air refuellers for the exercise. The US will deploy its F15 Strike Eagle jets.
