Two-day Coastal Security Exercise Held to Evaluate Threats from Sea

  • A two-day coastal security exercise -- 'Sagar Kavach' -- was conducted off the coast of Kerala and Mahe to evaluate threats from the sea and validate the effectiveness of the security mechanisms. As part of the exercise, real time threats and contingencies were simulated to assess the preparedness level of the coastal security agencies.
  • "Enhanced security measures were instituted and the entire coastline was kept under strict surveillance and monitoring. Deployment of coastal security apparatus including ships, patrol crafts and aircraft of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other maritime security agencies were undertaken in the territorial waters and adjoining seas.
  • The exercise was carried out under the aegis of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, who is also designated as the Commander-in-Chief, Coastal Defence (South).
  • The exercise was conducted in coordination with all coastal security stakeholders such as Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Police, Customs, Fisheries, Minor Ports, Intelligence agencies, Cochin Port and also the fishing and coastal communities.

IAF to Get First C-295 Plane in September

  • Spain will deliver the first military transport aircraft C-295 to the IAF in September.
  • The first lot of IAF pilots will commence training in May at an Airbus facility in Seville, Spain.
  • The MoD had, in 2021, signed a contract with Airbus for 56 aircraft at a cost of Rs. 21,000 crore.
  • Airbus will deliver 16 planes in a flyaway condition within 48 months of signing of the contract.
  • The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India by Airbus-Tata consortium.
  • All 56 aircraft will be installed with indigenous electronic warfare suite.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan New Controller of Personnel Services

  • Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan assumed charge as Controller of Personnel Services.
  • As per reports, Swaminathan, who was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare.
  • A recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, the Admiral has held several key operational, staff and training appointments in his naval career. The charges held by him include the command of missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash; the missile corvette INS Kulish; the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore; and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence Inaugurated at IIT Hyderabad

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology -Hyderabad. This is the biggest such facility in the country. DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat inaugurated the facility at the campus of the IIT-Hyderabad at Sangareddy in Telangana. The centre will take up futuristic projects towards long-term directed research needed for DRDO. He said the DIA CoE IIT-H is the largest centre among all 15 CoEs in the country and DRDO team will work with IIT-H to identify the target projects in each of these domains and execute to complete in a period of 3-5 years.

ARMY COMMANDERS CONFERENCE TO BE ORGANISED IN HYBRID FORMAT FROM 17 APRIL 2023

  •  Army Commanders' Conference (ACC) is an apex-level biannual event which is an institutional platform for conceptual level deliberations, culminating in making important policy decisions for the Indian Army. The first ACC for the year 2023 is scheduled from 17 to 21 April 2023. For the first time, the ACC is being conducted in Hybrid format exploiting available technology for secure communication, wherein Army Commanders and other senior functionaries will meet virtually on the first day and then travel to Delhi for balance physical meetings on matters which require detailed deliberations.
  • On the first-day of the conference, agenda points sponsored by various Command Headquarters will be discussed, followed by an update from Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command and sessions by Principal Staff Officers of the Army Headquarters. The forum will also review the progress on the activities charted out as part of 'Year of Transformation-2023' along with progress on Agnipath Scheme, digitisation & automation initiatives, Combat Engineers tasks, work aspects and budget management.
  • The apex leadership will also brainstorm current / emerging security scenario and review operational preparedness of Indian Army.

IAF to Deploy Rafale Jets in First Overseas Exercise

  • India will deploy four Rafale jets, two C-17 aircraft and two IL-78 mid-air refuellers for a nearly three-week multinational air exercise 'Exercise Orion' at France's Mont-de-Marsan military base.
  • It will be the first overseas exercise for the Indian Air Force's Rafale jets.
  • The exercise will be conducted from April 17 to May 5.
  • Besides the IAF and the French Air and Space Force (FASF), the exercise will be participated by air forces from Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States.
