Major Reshuffle in Navy Top Brass, Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi to be New Vice Chief

  • A major reshuffle took place in the Indian Navy top brass as a series of new appointments were made. Western Naval Commander Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi was named as the new Vice Chief of the force.
  • The Vice Chief of Naval Staff is responsible for the modernisation of the force.
  • Vice Admiral Tripathi replaced Vice Admiral S. J. Singh who was moved to command the Western Navy headquartered in Mumbai.
  • Vice Admiral Srinivas was moved to the Southern Naval Command as the new chief as the incumbent Vice Admiral Admiral Hampiholi is retiring at the end of this month (December 2023).

GRSE Delivers India's Largest-ever Survey Vessel to Navy

  • Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. delivered the largest-ever survey vessel to be built in the country 'INS Sandhayak' to the Indian Navy.
  • INS Sandhayak, the first in a series of four survey vessels being made by GRSE for the navy, was launched on December 5, 2021, and was undergoing fitting out and trials thereafter.
  • INS Sandhayak is the reincarnation of another ship by the same name, which was also a survey vessel. That ship had been commissioned into the navy in 1981 and decommissioned in 2021.

Cochin Shipyard and Adani Group Sign MoU for Building Green Tugs

  • State-run Cochin Shipyard Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding with Adani Group for constructing green tugs after delivering the first of the two tugs ordered by Ocean Sparkle Ltd, now owned by Adani Harbour Services Ltd.
  • This is the first tug to be built in India under the Approved Standard Tug Design Specifications (ASTDS) issued by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) for promoting the shipbuilding industry under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Navy Appoints First Woman Commanding Officer in Naval Ship

  • The Navy appointed the first woman commanding officer in a naval ship in line with the Navy's philosophy of 'all roles-all ranks' to deploying women in the service.
  • As per reports, the officer, a Lieutenant Commander, would be commanding INS Trinkat, a fast attack craft based in the western seaboard. She is yet to take over the new role.
  • This is for the first time that a woman officer would assume command of a ship. The officer is a qualified navigation instructor and has been involved in training observers inducted into the Navy.

Lt Gen Manjinder Singh Takes Over as GOC-in-C, Army Training Command

  • Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh took over as the 24th General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Shimla-based Army Training Command.
  • Prior to this, he was serving as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Policy, Planning and Force Development). He succeeded Lt Gen Surinder Singh Mahal, who superannuated.
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Kapurthala, National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Lt Gen Manjinder Singh was commissioned into 19 Madras in December 1986.

  • Air Marshal Makarand Ranade took over the esteemed position of Director General (Inspection and Safety) at Air HQ New Delhi, succeeding the accomplished Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor, who retired after more than 38 years of distinguished service. An alumnus of National Defence College, New Delhi, and College Interarmée de Defense in Paris, France, Air Marshal Ranade's illustrious career in the Indian Air Force spans over 36 years.
  • Air Marshal Ranade's tenure at Air HQ has been marked by significant contributions in various capacities, including Director, Personnel Officers, Principal Director at the Directorate of Air Staff Inspection, and Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Space). His multifaceted experience underscores his versatility in handling key responsibilities.
  • In recognition of his gallantry, Air Marshal Makarand Ranade was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 2006. Additionally, he received the prestigious Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020, further affirming his exceptional service and dedication to the Indian Air Force.

The 59th Raising Day of Border Security Force

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) celebrated its 59th raising day on December 1. This significant organisation plays a pivotal role in ensuring the security of India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Established in the aftermath of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, the BSF's motto, 'Duty Unto Death', reflects its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation.
  • Initially formed with 25 battalions, the BSF has witnessed substantial growth and currently comprises 192 battalions and approximately 270,000 personnel.
  • Beyond its core battalions, the BSF houses specialised units, including air and naval wings, as well as an artillery regiment, enhancing its operational capabilities.
