India Hosts SCO Joint Anti-terror Exercise to Combat Use of Internet for Terrorism & Separatism

  • India hosted the competent authorities of the SCO member states, with the support of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), joint anti-terrorist exercise to identify and control the use of the internet for terrorist, separatist and extremist purposes.
  • The exercise aimed to exchange positive experiences between the competent authorities of the SCO member states in countering the use of digital assets to finance terrorist, separatist and extremist activities.
  • Moreover, another objective of the exercise was to improve the mechanisms of interaction between the competent authorities of the SCO member states to identify and suppress the use of the Internet for terrorist, separatist and extremist purposes.
  • The practical seminar is one of India's initiatives started in 2019 under the framework of the SCO's Regional Anti-Terrorists Structure (RATS).
  • SCO RATS Member States include India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

India Successfully Flight Tests Indigenous High-speed Flying-wing UAV

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out a flight trial of Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator, an indigenous high-speed flying-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from the Aeronautical Test Range, Chitradurga in Karnataka.
  • The successful flying demonstration of this autonomous stealth UAV is a testimony to maturity in the technology readiness levels in the country. With this flight in the tailless configuration, India joined the elite club of countries to have mastered the controls for the flying wing technology.

MDL Submits Bid for Project to Build 3 New Kalvari Class Submarines

  • State-owned Mazagon Dockyards Limited submitted its response to the Defence Ministry tender for building three new Kalvari class submarines for the Indian Navy.
  • The MDL has already constructed six Scorpene submarines, five of which are already in service. The sixth one is likely to be commissioned in early 2024. The Indian Navy's fifth stealth Scorpene class submarine, INS Vagir, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 2023.
  • The Kalvari class submarines are extremely potent platforms, they have advanced stealth features and are also equipped with both long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles.

Britain, Japan and Italy Sign Advanced Fighter Jet Programme Treaty

  • Britain, Japan and Italy signed an international treaty to establish a programme aimed at developing an advanced fighter jets.
  • The agreement came a year after the three countries established their first major defence industry collaboration by merging the separate next-generation fighter efforts of London and Tokyo.
  • The parliaments of each country must ratify the agreement, which aims to see the combat aircraft in flight by 2035. The joint development phase of the programme will begin in 2025.

Indian Coast Guard Ship Sajag Strengthens Maritime Ties with UAE

  • The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sajag, an offshore patrol vessel, visited the UAE as part of its strategic overseas deployment to West Asia.
  • This visit marked a crucial milestone in the continuous diplomatic maritime engagement between India and the UAE. The primary objective of the visit is to strengthen professional relationships through joint exercises and interactions, contributing to collaborative efforts in the maritime sector. In alignment with India's strategic vision of "SAGAR – Security and Growth for all in the Region," this symbolic visit emphasised the commitment to fostering understanding and interoperability between the maritime forces of both nations.

Indian Navy Re-inducts Ship Gifted & Decommissioned by Maldives

  • The Indian Navy re-inducted a refurbished 22-year-old fast attack craft, INS Tarmugli, in a ceremonial commissioning ceremony at the naval dockyard, Visakhapatnam, more than seventeen years after she was gifted to Maldives which used it for years and returned to India in May 2023.
  • The ship has a unique distinction of having served under the flag of two nations with three names during her distinguished service till date. Commissioned in the Indian Navy as INS Tillanchang, a Trinkat Class ship, she was in active service till 2006, and thereafter gifted to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) by the Govt of India, as part of diplomatic outreach in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The ship, according to the Indian Navy, was commissioned into MNDF as MCGS Huravee in April 2006, and served there till its decommissioning in May 2023.

Armies of India, Vietnam Begin 11-day Military Exercise in Hanoi

  • The Indian and Vietnamese armies began an 11-day military exercise in Vietnam, in sync with the expanding strategic engagement between the two countries against the backdrop of common concerns over China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the South China Sea. The aim of the exercise is to foster a collaborative partnership and promote interoperability between the two forces.
  • The military exercise, 'VINBAX-23', between the two armies is taking place from December 11 to 21 in Hanoi.

Indian Navy Conducts Bi-annual Exercise 'Prasthan' off Mumbai Coast

  • Exercise 'Prasthan', which is conducted every six months, was held on the R12A (Ratna) Platform of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) around 83 km away from Mumbai harbour.
  • The 'Prasthan' is conducted to validate measures and procedures to address various contingencies that may arise in the oil production platforms and was held in two phases.
  • The first phase saw security emergencies such as attack by terrorists and bomb threat from IEDs, and upon receiving the 'threat', Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Mumbai, who is also the Commander-in-Chief (Coastal Defence), West activated the requisite contingency plan.
  • The Crisis Management Committee (CMC), comprising senior officials from various defence, State and civilian agencies, assembled at the Indian Navy's Operation Centre to facilitate a coordinated response to all emergencies involved.
  • The CMC assessed various aspects of the emergencies and initiated coordinated actions by concerned agencies as per established Standard Operating Procedures.
  • The Indian Navy, in conjunction with the Indian Air Force, deployed its anti-sabotage teams to neutralise security threats in the affected oil platform.
  • It also saw actions to counter contingencies such as terrorist intrusion, bomb threat, man overboard, medical evacuation of platform crew and oil spill in the area.
  • This was followed by the second phase which witnessed action against contingencies such as fire in the oil platform and assisting a disabled vessel in the offshore development area.

Indian Navy Looking to Acquire Indigenously-made Underwater Chariots

  • The Indian Navy is reportedly mulling to acquire domestically manufactured swimmer delivery vehicles, also known as underwater chariots and midget submarines, in a bid to modernise and bolster the capabilities of its Marine Commandos (MARCOS)—a special force of the Navy modelled on the US Navy Seals.
  • These so-called chariots are used by almost all advanced navies in the world. These are self-propelled vehicles which can be launched from ships or submarines, depending on their size and the roles they are to perform.
