Naval Exercise MILAN- 2024 to be Held at Visakhapatnam

  • The 12th edition of the Multilateral Naval Exercise - 2024 (MILAN) would be held at Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27, 2024 and likely witness the largest-ever participation by over 50 countries and nearly 20 ships from friendly nations.
  • The flagship event, MILAN is a biennial multilateral naval exercise, which was incepted by the Indian Navy in 1995. Originally conceived in consonance with India's 'Look East Policy, MILAN expanded in ensuing years with the Govt of India's 'Act East policy' and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative, to include participation from other Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs).

Cochin Shipyard, Defence Ministry Sign Rs. 488 cr Contract for Ship Repairs

  • Cochin Shipyard Limited signed a Rs. 488.25 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence for repair and maintenance of equipment and systems onboard naval vessels.
  • Cochin Shipyard, renowned as a premier shipyard in India for both commercial and defence shipbuilding and repairs, continues to play a pivotal role in bolstering the country's maritime capabilities.
  • The yard, with its pan-India presence is focusing on expanding its footprint and developing a larger ecosystem for shipbuilding and repairs across the nation.

INS Shivaji Gets Original 'Vir Chakra' Awarded To 1971 War Hero

  • The Indian Navy's premier technical training establishment, INS Shivaji, received the original 'Vir Chakra' awarded to late Vice-Admiral Benoy Roy Chowdhury for his gallant actions during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
  • Vice-Admiral Dinesh Prabhakar, Distinguished Chair-Marine Engineering, INS Shivaji, received the Vir Chakra from Padipta Bose and Gargi Bose, the family members of Vice-Admiral Chowdhury, on behalf of the Navy at a solemn ceremony organised at the training establishment in Lonavala, around 60km from Pune city.

Navy Chief Attends Maritime Conclave in Bangkok

  • Admiral Kumar led a three-member delegation at the eighth Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) conclave of chiefs hosted by Royal Thai Navy in Bangkok.
  • The IONS was conceived by the Indian Navy in 2008 as a forum to enhance maritime co-operation among navies of the littoral states of the Indian Ocean region.
  • The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) is a series of biennial meetings.
  • The IONS grouping consists of 25 member countries and 8 observers.

US-led Red Sea Patrol Force Formed in Response to Attacks by Houthis Backing Palestinians

  • Several countries agreed to jointly carry out patrols in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to try to safeguard commercial shipping against attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels, who say they are supporting Palestinians under siege by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
  • U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on a visit to Bahrain, identified several countries taking part in an international force. It was unclear whether those countries are willing to do what U.S. warships have done - shoot down Houthi missiles and drones and rush to the aid of commercial ships under attack.
  • As per Lloyd Austin, this is an international challenge that demands collective action. Therefore he announced the establishment of 'Operation Prosperity Guardian', an important new multinational security initiative.
  • It identified participating nations led by the United States as including among others the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain.

Indian Akash Air Defence Missile System Destroys 4 Targets Simultaneously

  • Looking to export its indigenous weapon systems, India strongly demonstrated the firepower of its Akash surface-to-air (SAM) weapon system, where a single firing unit simultaneously engaged and destroyed four unmanned targets during the recent Exercise Astrashakti 2023.
  • With this demonstration during the Air Force Exercise Astrashakti-2023, India became the first to demonstrate the capability of engaging four targets simultaneously at such ranges by command guidance using a single firing unit.

India, Philippines Hold Drill in South China Sea

  • Signalling their intent in the Indo-Pacific, the Indian Navy and the Philippines Navy carried out a maritime partnership exercise in the South China Sea.
  • INS Kadmatt on a long-range operation deployment to the 'West Philippine Sea' undertook the exercise with BRP Ramon Alcaraz of Philippine Navy.
  • Manoeuvres, replenishment at sea approaches, flying operations by the Indian Navy helicopter and communication drills were undertaken during the exercise.

Indian Navy & IIT Kanpur Join Forces to Drive Innovation through Research Partnership

  • Indian Navy and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi, symbolising their commitment to promote technology development, innovative solutions and joint R&D. Rear Admiral K. Srinivas, Asst Chief of Materiel (Dockyard & Refits) and Professor Subramaniam Ganesh, Officiating Director IIT Kanpur concluded this MoU.
  • The Indian Navy and IIT Kanpur share common interest in academic exchange of scientific research activities in the field of Engineering related to defence technologies. The MoU would serve as a broader framework and enable both sides to enhance capacity building, provide solutions to field level issues and enhance training effectiveness through exchange of faculty/ guest lectures.
