Ramesh Pokhriyal Inaugurates Buildings of Central University of Punjab

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal virtually inaugurated the ultramodern new university campus and newly constructed buildings of the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB) situated in village Ghudda, Dist. Bathinda, in the illustrious presence of Harsdimrat Kaur Badal, Member of Parliament, Bathinda Lok Sabha Parliamentary Constituency.
A total of 10 buildings and the University Insignia Monument (dedicated to 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan and Jai Anusandhan)' at CUPB New Campus, built at the cost of Rs. 203.78 Crore was inaugurated by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.
Pokhriyal appreciated that the Central University of Punjab is doing remarkable work in the field of education & research. He praised CUPB for implementing the best administrative and teaching practices; the University Grants Commission is considering implementing them in other universities.

Kerala First State to Become Digital in Public Education

The State of Kerala is the first state in the country to make public education completely digital. The state government achieved it at a cost of Rs. 42.36 crores. The initiative was launched in 2018.
The project of making public education completely digital in Kerala was implemented by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education.
Around 3,74,274 digital services were distributed in 16,027 schools in Kerala. The project also set up high-tech labs in more than 11,275 schools at primary and secondary levels.

Microsoft and AICTE Collaborate to Skill Students, Educators in Next-gen Tech

Tech-giant Microsoft partnered with All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE) to empower learners and educators in new-age technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), data science, and cloud computing.
As part of the partnership, over 1,500-course modules from Microsoft will be made available to students and educators free of cost through AICTE's e-learning portal ELIS.
Microsoft's learning resource centre Microsoft Learn has been integrated with the ELIS platform to provide access to personalised learning paths and resources for students, covering a broad range of technologies including AI, IoT, data science, and cloud computing, among others.

Flipkart Introduces 45-day Paid Festive Internship for Students

E-commerce marketplace Flipkart brought back its paid internship programme Launch pad for undergraduate students from tier-II cities and beyond to work in its supply chain ahead of the festive season and the Big Billion Days sale.
The company said that the 45-day internship is aimed at helping students gain critical skills in supply chain management and create an ecosystem of trained professionals for the e-commerce industry.
Over 2,000 students participated in the internship programme last year.
Flipkart is working with educational institutes across 21 locations, including Binola (Haryana), Bhiwandi (Maharashtra), Uluberia and Dankuni (West Bengal) and Malur (Karnataka), Medchal (Telangana) and several more, to identify meritorious students and engage the selected ones at its fulfilment centres.

India is Fourth Lowest Spender on Health

Afghanistan and India set aside the same share for health in their budgets, 4%, just above a quarter of the recommended spending and one-third of what the second poorest country in the world, Burundi, did. And that may have affected how far people were shielded from the Covid-19 outbreak, the latest 'Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index 2020' by international charity Oxfam says.
Globally, the report found, only 26 of the 158 countries surveyed were spending the recommended 15% of their budgets on health. Nigeria, Bahrain and India, (the last of) currently experiencing the world's fastest-growing outbreak of Covid-19, were among the world's worst performing countries in tackling inequality going into the pandemic.
The survey data shows India spent less than 4% of its budget on health and ranked 155th on the health spending index.
According to the World Bank database, India was the 13th lowest (among 206 for which data was available) in terms of the percentage of total government expenditure that went to health in 2017.

Maine Island Witnesses First Childbirth in more than 90 Years

A woman has given birth to a baby on Maine Island for the first time in more than nine decades.
Azalea Belle Gray is the sixth child for Aaron Gray and Erin Fernald Gray on Islesford, which is also known as Little Cranberry Island.
Ellen Fernald Gray said she didn't set out to be the first woman to have a home birth in Islesford since Calvin Coolidge was president.
She said she didn't realise how long it'd been since the last island birth: her own grandfather, Warren Fernald, in 1927.
It was only after Azalea's birth that she learned that the lifelong lobsterman who died in 2005 had previously been the most recent birth on Islesford.

Assam to Shut down All Government-aided Madrasas, Sanskrit Schools

In a significant development, Assam Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government has decided to shut down all state-run madrasas and Sanskrit tols (schools) as it is not possible for Assam government to use public funds to teach religious scriptures.
A formal notification in this regard will be issued by the state government in November.
As per Sarma, after the closing down of the madrasas, 48 contractual teachers would be shifted to schools under the Education Department.

Gujarat Government Awards Supercomputer 'Param Shavak' to Marwadi University

In an effort to boost the education infrastructure in the state and the country, the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) of Gujarat Government, has conferred Marwadi University with supercomputer 'Param'.
With this Marwadi University is amongst only a handful of universities in the state to have the facility of a supercomputer.
The indigenously developed Param Shavak supercomputing system will facilitate high-end computations and research work in the field of AI, CE/IT, ICT, ML.

IISc Bangalore Offers Online Course in Computational Data Science

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore will soon offer an advanced programme in computational data science. The 10-month executive programme is for current and aspiring data engineers, data analysts, data architects, and data scientists. The course is being offered online in partnership TalentSprint — an online learning platform.
The first cohort of the programme will start in January 2021 and is open to 50 professionals from India, APAC, and the Middle East. Students will undergo live and interactive online classes and mentor participants to solve data science problems.
Interested can visit iisc.talentsprint.com/cds/ and apply. Applicants should have a bachelors' degree and at least one year of work experience and programming knowledge.

IIT-Madras Launches Online Course in Business Accounting Process

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras has launched a new online course on the business accounting process. The institute's Digital Skills Academy partnered with Bengaluru-based ArthaVidhya to offer this programme aims to upskill students and professionals looking for a career in finance and accounting.
The course is completely online, interactive and job-oriented. The candidates will get a concept of a virtual office, embedded in Artificial Intelligence-based 'Interactive Learning Management System' (iLMS).
According to K Mangala Sunder, Head, Digital Skills Academy the course is designed to provide students with a simulated environment (virtual office), giving the students a real-life simulation of actual work environment throughout the programme.

UGC Declares Twenty-four Universities as Fake

The University Grants Commission announced a list of 24 unrecognised universities. These Universities have been termed as fake. This has been done by UGC to maintain the standards of higher education in the country.
The maximum number of these universities are operating from the states of Uttar Pradesh followed by Delhi. They have been termed fake based on the provisions of UGC act.
Of the list announced eight of these universities were from UP, two from West Bengal, two from Odisha and seven from Delhi. The states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry have one fake university each. UGC has also notified that the word "University" shall not be used by any institutions other than those established and recognised by UGC.
