QS Asia University Rankings 2021

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), global higher education think-tank and compilers of the world's most-consulted university rankings portfolio, have released the QS Asia University Rankings 2021 for the continent's best higher education institutions. The National University of Singapore has come up as Asia's best university for the third consecutive year.
No Indian university featured in the top 10 in the list. The top three Indian universities to feature on the Asia Rankings are IIT Bombay (Rank 47), IIT Delhi (Rank 50), and IIT Madras (Rank 56). A total of 107 Indian institutes made it to the overall QS Asia Rankings. Of them, 7 bagged a spot in the top 100.
For the Asia-specific version released in November 2020, QS compared the top 650 universities in Asia across eleven key indicators of university performance, which capture academic standing, graduate employability, research quality, web presence, internationalization on campus, and the diversity of each institution's international collaborations.

University of Auckland Announces Micro-internship Programme

The University of Auckland launched a virtual micro-internship programme for international students both in New Zealand and those studying with University from overseas.
The micro-internship is a three-week programme involving around 20 hours of work per week. Interns will work in small teams to tackle a business challenge for an Auckland-based employer. The programme includes an online induction and briefing to get to know the team and project.
The university had held a pilot micro-internship programme for 100 students with Auckland business KPMG and Deloitte, among others. After the pilot batch got good response, it is now being offered to international students.
It is now being delivered in partnership with Global Talent Solution and the number of internship will be extended to 500 students over two new rounds of the programme.

Engineering Courses in Mother Tongue from Next Year

As per reports, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) will start offering engineering courses in mother tongue from next academic year.
The decision was taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal .
A seminal decision was made to start technical education, especially engineering courses, imparting education in mother tongue (and this) will be opened from next academic year. A few IITs and NITs are being shortlisted for the same.
The NTA had last month announced its decision to conduct the JEE (Main) in nine regional languages, apart from Hindi and English from 2021.
However, the IITs are yet to take up the matter on whether the JEE (Advanced) will also be offered in regional language.

SPPU, US Embassy Officials Discuss Joint Cooperation in Education

Senior officials of the US Embassy in Mumbai, including Consul General David J. Ranz, met representatives of the Savitri Phule University (SPPU) to discuss strengthening of ties between higher education institutions in the US and the university.
As per Ranz, the US is keen on partnering with universities across western India, supporting curriculum development and new technology.
US Embassy official have expressed interest in The Centre for Molecular Diagnostic, set up SPPU during the pandemic, which has conducted research on communicable and con-communicable diseases.

First Woman in South Sudan to Head South Sudan University

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir for the first time appointed a woman to chair the governing body of a university.
Awut Deng Achuil, currently the Minister of General Education and Instructions, will chair the council of the University of Bahr El-Ghazal.
The university was established in 1991, when South Sudan was still part of Sudan. The country gained its independence in 2011.
Ms. Achuil was also the first woman to serve as South Sudan's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
She relinquished the post following the appointment of a unity government in February to end conflict between rival groups in South Sudan.

Kenyan University Beats Oxford in Law Competition

Kenya's Kenyatta University has beaten the UK's Oxford University in the semi-finals of a competition for aspiring lawyers.
Oxford - one of the most prestigious universities in the world - was the defending champions in the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition.
It sees students being given a hypothetical human rights case to argue, with teams from around the world participating in the annual event. It was held virtually this year.
Kenyatta University was represented by third-year and second-year students Sidney Tambasi Netya and Martin Kioko Munyoto respectively, who are both studying law.

Airtel Partners with Vedantu to Provide Classes via DTH Channels

Airtel Digital TV, the DTH arm of Bharti Airtel and Vedantu, the pioneer in LIVE online learning, announced an innovative partnership to make quality education accessible to students across India by leveraging the deep reach of Airtel.
Under the partnership, two dedicated DTH channels -Vedantu Materclasses — will be available exclusively to the 17 Mn Airtel Digital TV customers at the highly affordable price of Rs. 4 per day. The channels will cater to students from Classes 6 to 10 and Classes 11 to 12 respectively, and will cover Maths and Science.
The learning will be delivered by best-in-class faculty including graduates from IIT and AIIMS with proven track records in teaching. The medium of teaching will be a mix of English and Hindi with plans underway to add regional language content, where possible.

PM Modi to Address 100th Foundation Day of University of Lucknow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the celebration of the centennial foundation day of the University of Lucknow on November 25. The PM will address the students via a video conference. The university was established in 1920 and is celebrating its 100th year.
Prime Minister will unveil the university's centennial commemorative coin. He will also release a special commemorative postal stamp issued by India Post and its special cover during the event.
The varsity is dedicating an entire week to the celebrations which started from November 19 and will conclude on November 25.

IIT Guwahati Develops Error Free Data Transmission System

A research team led by IIT Guwahati faculty, Dr. Bosanta Ranjan Boruah, Department of Physics, IIT Guwahati, and Dr. Santanu Konwar, presently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, Abhayapuri College, Assam, has developed a novel free-space optical communication system for information transfer.
In free-space communication, data in the form of voice, text or image is transmitted using light wirelessly rather than through optical fibres and it represents the next generation of communications technology.
