Cambridge University Names Chemistry Department after Indian Scientist Yusuf Hamied

Yusuf Hamied, Polish-born Indian scientist and the chairman of Cipla, was honoured as 'generous benefaction' by the University of Cambridge. The Chemistry department of the university will be named after him until 2050.
Dr. Hamied is a former alumnus of Cambridge University and made a transformational gift to his alma mater and ensured that the chemistry of the university will continue to be world-leading in both teaching and research.
In 2018, he endowed one of the world's oldest academic Chairs in Chemistry, now known as the Yusuf Hamied 1702 Chair. His academic mentor and supervisor, Nobel Laureate Lord Alexander Todd, held the Chair during Hamied's time at Cambridge as an undergraduate and PhD student.

Kalpathi Group Launches ed-tech Firm to Capture Test Prep Market

The Kalpathi Group, a Chennai-based business group with interests ranging from software services to entertainment, announced its foray into the crowded Ed-tech space by launching Veranda Learning Solution, a comprehensive online education platform to bring together the academic rigour and discipline of offline education and the best of the online technology.
Education is nothing new to Kalpathi or the Rs. 4,000-crore Kalpathi Group. In the early 1990s, Kalpathi along with his two brothers Kalpathi S Aghoram and Kalpathi S Ganesh set up SSI as an IT training provider in Chennai which went on to become one of the world's largest education networks for vocational training in the private sector.
SSI later acquired Aptech and grew into a global provider of education, consultancy and software services.

India Records Largest Reduction in Malaria Cases in South-East Asia

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), India made strong progress in the fight against malaria, recording the largest reduction in cases in South-East Asia from 20 million in 2000 to about 5.6 million last year (2019).
As per the World Malaria Report 2020, in 2019, malaria cases globally numbered about 229 million, an annual estimate that has remained virtually unchanged over the last four years.
Last year, the disease claimed about 409,000 lives, compared to 411,000 in 2018.
Countries in South-East Asia made particularly strong progress, with reductions in cases and deaths of 73 per cent and 74 per cent, respectively. India contributed to the largest drop in cases region-wide – from approximately 20 million to about 6 million.

Digital Learning to be Implemented in Karnataka's Government Colleges

Karnataka government has decided to implement learning management system (LMS)-based digital learning in government higher educational institutions from the academic year 2020-21. 'Karnataka LMS' would be implemented in 430 government first grade colleges, 87 government polytechnics and 14 government engineering colleges.
Karnataka LMS' was launched by Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister C. N. Ashwath Narayan, who is also in-charge of the Higher Education Department. LMS-based digital learning is said to be a novel and a first of its kind initiative of the state government, a boon to the students of Government Higher Education Institutions, especially those from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society. It is a platform to revolutionise the teaching and learning process by effecting changes in delivery of content, access and assessment.
Multilingual e-content in the form of PPTs, videos, quizzes, assignments and e-study materials congruous with both self-learning and classroom teaching is being developed as per the university-prescribed syllabi of 14 affiliating varsities by the faculty of the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education.

Tamil Nadu Ranks on the Top in Organ Donation Yet Again

Tamil Nadu has been adjudged the best in organ donation in the country for the sixth consecutive year.
The 11th Indian Organ Donation Day was celebrated on Friday, and the virtual event was organised by the Union Health Ministry in New Delhi. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey participated.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar participated in the event from Pudukottai, and Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan from the Directorate of Medical Services in Chennai.

National Conference on 'Empowering Through Zero-'Shunya Se Sashaktikaran'

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' addressed a virtual National Conference on 'Empowering through Zero- Shunya Se Sashaktikaran' organised by Sri Aurobindo Society.
In the presence of education officers and teachers connected through digital platforms across the country, Pokhriyal honoured more than 40 education officers for their leadership role and 26 teachers for their innovative practices during Covid-19 pandemic.
The Minister also launched 'Innovation and Leadership Casebook – Covid Edition', the e-books consist of the innovative efforts and work of the education officers and teachers.

IBM, MeitY collaborate to Build Future-Ready Skills, Enhance Employability

Tech giant IBM said it has collaborated with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to create a robust education and skilling ecosystem through the Common Services Centre Academy.
CSC Academy, part of the Common Services Centre (CSC), and IBM, along with implementation partners CSR Box, Uva Jagriti Sansthan and Jeevitam will foster the capability and development of learners with diverse backgrounds and educational needs.
They will extensively use technology, teaching and delivering of specialised courses/training programmes in areas including Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to train learners such as village-level entrepreneurs, functionaries and stakeholders of the CSC programme.

Shri Narendra Singh Tomar Unveiled Sahakar Pragya

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, Panchayat Raj and Food Processing Industries, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar unveiled Sahakar Pragya.
The 45 new training modules of Sahakar Pragya of the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) will impart training to primary cooperative societies in rural areas of the country along with Lakshmanrao Inamdar National Cooperative Research and Development Academy (Linac).
Sahakar Pragya embodies enhancing NCDC's training capacity by 18-fold through an elaborate network of 18 Regional Training Centres across the country by the dedicated, Laxmanrao Inamdar National Academy for Cooperative Research and Development (LINAC) set up and fully funded by NCDC.

IIT Guwahati Signs MOU with IIT (BHU) Varanasi to Offer Joint Doctoral Programmes

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
Under this MoU, IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU), Varanasi will start a Joint Doctoral Programme in July 2021. Directors of both the Institutes, Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, and Prof. Pramod Kumar Jain, Director, IIT (BHU) said that this is the first time in the country that two IITs have come together to offer a joint degree programme.
The idea of a joint PhD programme was originally proposed by Prof. T. G. Sitharam in 53rd IIT Council Meeting held in September 2019. The vision behind this is to build a "Network of Excellence" of all IITs rather than each one striving to become a "Tower of Excellence". The IIT Council accepted the proposal to start Joint Degree Programs. Through this academic collaboration, both the institutes are expecting significant boost in high quality research and foundation for further academic collaborations.
