DU Signs MoU with University of Ladakh

  • The Delhi University (DU) signed an MoU with the University of Ladakh for a period of five years with the aim of a collaboration between the two varsities in terms of exchange programmes, sports and cultural activities and sharing of library resources and other resources.
  • The MoU was signed by DU Vice-Chancellor P.C. Joshi and C. Phunsog, V-C of the University of Ladakh, with other senior officials present as well.

University of Dundee Launches Global Excellence Scholarship

  • The UK-based University of Dundee has announced its Global Excellence Scholarship for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses up to £25,000.
  • For the undergraduate courses, the scholarship will be awarded at two levels. To be considered in the level one of £5,000 per year (up to £25,000) and level two £2,000 per year (up to £10,000), scholarship applicants need to hold their academic offer letter for the undergraduate programme beginning in September 2021.
  • The scholarship waiver of £5,000 for PG programmes will be awarded based on excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student needs to hold an academic offer entry for the postgraduate programmes either in September 2021 or January 2022.

IIT Kanpur Forms Students Entrepreneurship Policy to Foster Innovation, Entrepreneurship

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, that its Academic Senate has approved a comprehensive Students' Entrepreneurship Policy. The policy recognizes the importance of fostering innovation and entrepreneurial spirit amongst the students in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) and National Innovation and Start-up Policy (NISP).
  • The policy introduces the path-breaking concept of "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Credit", which will enable students to pursue their innovation and entrepreneurial aspirations as part of their academic journey while pursuing their degrees.
  • The policy allows undergraduate students in 3rd year and postgraduate students immediately after completion of the minimum course work to gain academic credit while pursuing entrepreneurial activities.

Jamia Hamdard Launches New MSc Course

  • Jamia Hamdard University has introduced a new MSc programme this year. The MSc in Computational and Systems Biology and Bioinformatics will be offered from the academic session 2021-22. The programme will be jointly offered by Schools of Computer Science and Engineering, Life sciences and Pharmacy.
  • The MSc (CSB) is a multidisciplinary program that combines the application of Computer technology to the management and analyses of biological data, develop new algorithms and software and use the software for the interpretation and analysis of the data into meaningful biological and biomedical information.

Cabinet Approves Continuation of Samagra Shiksha Scheme for Next 5 Years

  • The Union Cabinet approved continuation of the Samagra Shiksha Scheme for school education for another five years.
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the scheme would continue from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026.
  • Under 'Samagra Shiksha Scheme 2', financial outlay of Rs. 2.94 trillion, which includes central share of Rs. 1.85 trillion, has been made to implement the scheme. It will cover 1.16 million schools, over 156 million students and 5.7 million teachers of government and and aided schools.
  • Samagra Shiksha is an overarching programme for the school education sector extending from pre-school to class 12. The scheme has been prepared with the broader goal of improving school effectiveness measured in terms of equal opportunities for schooling and equitable learning outcomes. It subsumes the three Schemes of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE) and was launched in 2018.

Khallikote Autonomous College Gets Unitary University Status

  • The Khallikote Autonomous College, one of the oldest colleges in Odisha, was given the status of a unitary university.
  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced in May 2021 that unitary university status would be granted to the 165-year-old college, located in Berhampur town in Ganjam district.
  • The institution was started as a school in 1856 in Berhampur and became an intermediate college in 1878. The autonomy was conferred to it in 1990.
  • A unitary university is a varsity that acts as a single unit without any affiliated college under it.

UGC Declares 24 Universities Fake

  • In response to the question asked in the Lok Sabha whether the government has taken note that many fake/non-recognised universities are running in the country, the Education Minister informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 24 self-styled institutes fake and found two more in violation of norms.
  • Based on the complaints received from the students, parents, general public, and also through electronic print media, University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 24 self-styled institutes as fake universities.
  • Uttar Pradesh has the highest eight such fake universities and Delhi has seven such fake universities.

IIT Mandi Launches Start-up Exploration Programme

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi Catalyst started its 2nd Start-up Exploration programme of 2021 with Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, Director, Dept. of Industries, H.P., virtually flagging off the programme. Along with the chief guest, the virtual event was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Mandi; Samir Shah, Managing Partner, Peak Ventures, and faculty members of IIT Mandi.
  • As many as 23 start-up teams including 11 from Himachal Pradesh working in sectors including Waste Management, Agrotech, Healthtech, Enterprise Management, and Cleantech participated in the inaugural session.
  • The 23 startups selected by IIT Mandi Catalyst will go through a rigorous training and mentoring process over the next three months after which they will present their refined ideas on a demo-day. Most suitable ideas will be further supported by IIT Mandi Catalyst through a one-year program under various funding schemes.

IIT Roorkee Launches Seven New Academic Programmes in Technology

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee launched seven new academic programmes to cater to the rising demand for new-age technologies.
  • The seven new programmes are in select areas of engineering, architecture, economics and management along with specialisation in data science and artificial intelligence.
  • The new programmes involve the transmission of relevant knowledge and using the knowledge we produce. They are interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary, and also in line with National Education Policy 2020.
  • The programmes, which include six postgraduate degree programmes and one five-year integrated programme, would be offered to students from the next autumn session (2021-2022).

UAE Launches Covid Vaccine for Children Aged 3-17

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched Covid-19 vaccines for children aged 3 to 17.
  • UAE will administer China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 3-17.
  • This decision was taken after clinical trials and extensive evaluations. As per authorities, trial was monitored for immune response of 900 children.
  • UAE is among world's highest immunisation rates. It was already providing Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 12-15.
  • UAE has started manufacturing this covid-19 vaccine for Children under a joint venture between Sinopharm and Abu Dhabi-based technology company Group 42.
  • As per health ministry of UAE, 78.95% of population of 9 million have received one vaccine dose while 70.57% have been fully vaccinated.
