30 Delhi Govt. Schools will Come under New Education Board from 2021-22

  • Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that the newly formed Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) will affiliate 30 government schools from the 2021-22 academic session.
  • Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, said the government will launch 20 Schools of Specialised Excellence (SoSE) by August 15. The decisions were taken at the second General Body meeting of DBSE and SoSE, chaired by Sisodia.

Online Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science by IGNOU

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched a postgraduate diploma in sustainable science. The online post graduate diploma in sustainability science (PGDSS) will be offered by the varsity's School of Inter-Disciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies (SOITS).
  • The PGDSS programme mainly focuses on the genesis and principles of sustainable development, its tools, implementation and assessment strategies in a holistic way.
  • The basics of natural resource management, ecological economics, global and local efforts for sustainable development through good governance, law and policy are integrated into an academic framework so that students are able to understand the tools and techniques in developing and implementing sustainable development projects.

No Proposal to Rename IIT Madras as IIT Chennai

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan ruled out any proposal to rename the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras as IIT Chennai.
  • Pradhan made the statement in response to a written question in Lok Sabha.
  • "Any such proposal for amending the name of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is not under consideration of the government," he said.
  • Madras city was renamed as Chennai in 1996 by the Tamil Nadu government.

  • Tata Steel Foundation has inked pacts with non-profit bodies - KMCO and CIF in a bid to boost education among underprivileged children and youth in Jamshedpur.
  • All three organisations have been engaged in running high impact projects in the education and technical training sectors.
  • Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with Kudy Mahanty Chirens' Opportunities (KMCO) Trust and Cummins India Foundation (CIF) in an attempt to garner opportunities in the education sector.

IIT-K Launches Innovation Hub to Find Solutions for Anti-drone Technologies

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) launched technology innovation hub to find cyber security solutions for intrusion detection system, anti-drones technologies, cyber physical system and block-chain.
  • After a rigorous application process, 25 research and development principal investigators and 13 start-ups were selected.
  • Cutting-edge technology in cyber security is in increasing need to protect the digital assets of the common public as well as the industry and government.
  • C3i hub of IIT Kanpur will focus on safeguarding the cyberspace which will also include critical infrastructure.
  • Make-in India cyber security solutions are being promoted by the government to counter the rising threats from India's neighbouring countries, like China.
  • The government is also trying to promote make in India equipment for all the critical sectors of the nations like railways, banking, power and telecom.

IITs, IISc to Offer New Courses on Electric Vehicles, IoT, Sustainable Development

  • The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), a joint initiative of IITs and IISc, has launched new courses on electric vehicles and renewable energy, design for IoT, business and sustainable development, for July 2021 semester through the Swayam platform.
  • NPTEL offers certification courses through the MOOCs format. Learners need to watch videos online, submit assignments on a weekly/monthly basis and can register for an optional proctored final exam. There is a nominal fee charged towards the in-person proctored exam for the certification. Students can request for transfer of credits once they clear the NPTEL certification exam if it is approved by the educational institute they are affiliated with.

Kerala Removes Age Limit for Transgenders in University Admissions

  • The authorities of the state of Kerala have removed the upper age limit for transgender college students of the state who are seeking admission to numerous educational programs available in the State universities and its affiliated schools.
  • The resolution to remove the upper age limit has been done to encourage the transgender students in the State to pursue various postgraduate and undergraduate educational programs.
  • In the year 2018 the state authorities had sanctioned two seats reserved only for transpersons in all programs that are run by universities and affiliated schools in the State. This decision was taken to empower the transgender population of Kerala.
  • The authorities of Kerala had directed the state universities to undertake transgender coverage to deal with the differences faced by the college students who are transgender.
  • Views of the Kerala State Higher Education Council and the various universities of the state had been sought by the authorities before formulating the points on the basis of which the upper age limit for transgender candidates has been removed.
