The World University Rankings 2022

The Times Higher Education (THE) announced the results of The World University Rankings 2022 with the UK's University of Oxford, which led the way in the global search for a Covid-19 vaccine – retaining top spot for an impressive sixth consecutive year. A record 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions appear in the table with Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji and Palestine all represented for the first time.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is India's best-ranked institution, maintaining its position in the 301-350 band for a third consecutive year. As a result, India is home to 35 of the world's top 1000 universities, its second-highest total ever in the rankings (36 in The World University Rankings 2020). IIT Ropar was ranked in the top 351-400 bracket, while IIT Indore was in the 401-450 bracket.

IIT Ropar Develop's World's First 'Plant Based' Smart Air Purifier

Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Ropar and Kanpur and Faculty of Management Studies of Delhi University have jointly launched a living-plant based air purifier named "Ubreathe Life". This air purifier will boost the air purification process in indoor spaces, such as hospitals, schools, offices and homes. It is the world's first, state-of-the-art 'Smart Bio-Filter' that can make breathing fresh.
The Ubreathe Life technology works through the air-purifying natural leafy plants. The room air interacts with leaves and goes to the soil-root zone where maximum pollutants are purified.
It has been developed by the IIT Ropar incubated startup, Urban Air Laboratory. The specific plants tested for air-purification include Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Spider plant etc. and all have given good results in purifying indoor-air, the company has claimed.
The purifier effectively improves indoor air quality by removing particulate, gaseous and biological contaminants while increasing the oxygen levels in the indoor space through specific plants, UV disinfection and a stack of Pre-filter, Charcoal filter and HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter fitted in a specially designed wooden box, the company has said about the air purifier's functioning mechanism.

IIT Madras Announces Online platform 'e-Source'

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is working on developing an innovative digital model to address the problem of e-waste (electronic wastes). The digital platform, named as 'e-Source,' will act as an exchange platform, to serve as an online marketplace for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
The e-Source platform will link various stakeholders (buyers and sellers) of used and waste electronic equipment and components, both in the formal and informal economy.
The initiative is being led by the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS), a centre set up at IIT Madras in 2010 at the initiative of the German and Indian governments.

IIM-Ahmedabad to Offer Customised Management Programme for Officials of DAE Organisations

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). As per this agreement, it will offer the custom-designed 'Sarabhai Management Development Programme for senior executives of DAE Organisations'.
The senior executives from DAE institutions such as the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) will be participating in this programme, which will conclude on September 4, 2021.
The programme will provide participants with an understanding of the latest business practices, management techniques and tools that will allow them to enhance efficiency and contribute to their respective organisations. Experts in the fields of management will be invited to facilitate cross-learning.

Special 'Advance' Fellowships for Afghanistan Students

The OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has launched special fellowships, the Advancement of Afghan Nationals in Comprehensive Education (ADVANCE), offering credible educational alternatives to Afghanistan students whose educational pursuits may have been disrupted due to the ongoing crisis in the country.
The pioneering and humanitarian educational initiative is in response to the complicated geopolitical situation in the region and the need for students to have credible educational alternatives to pursue their academic goals and aspirations.
ADVANCE will provide an exceptional opportunity to selected students to pursue PhD degrees at any of the schools or institutes offering doctoral programmes and to work closely with the global faculty of JGU.
The aim of the Fellowship is to support, strengthen and empower students from Afghanistan to develop their research capabilities and intellectual competencies and provide them a pathway for a career in academia.

IIT-Roorkee, IISc Bangalore, C-DAC Develop India's First Quantum Computer Simulator Toolkit

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India launched the country's first 'Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim) Toolkit'. QSim is a first-of-its-kind toolkit to be indigenously developed and is intended to be a vital tool in learning and understanding the practical aspects of programming using Quantum Computers.
It is the country's first collaborative initiative in this field, brought together by IISc Bangalore, IIT Roorkee and C-DAC to address the common challenge of advancing the Quantum Computing research frontiers in India. It will enable researchers and students to research Quantum Computing in a cost-effective manner.
QSim equips researchers to explore quantum algorithms under idealised conditions and assists them in making necessary arrangements for experiments to run on actual Quantum Hardware. QSim can serve as an essential educational/research tool providing an excellent way to attract students/researchers to the field of Quantum Technology. The toolkit creates a platform that helps students and users acquire the skills of 'programming' and 'designing' real Quantum Hardware.
