Tripura Govt .to Hand over Low Enrollment Schools to Coveted Private Organisations

  • According to Ratan Lal Nath, the Education Minister of Tripura, the Tripura government framed a new policy to invite prestigious institutions of the country to take over schools that have very low enrollment located in the rural areas of the state.
  • This policy was framed in the month of October and as of now, no private institution meeting the criteria set by the government showed interest in coming to Tripura.
  • As per Ratan Lal Nath, in Tripura, there are 4,200 schools in total, out of which the Tripura government directly controls, 2,600 schools and 1,630 schools come under the jurisdiction of TTAADC.

Delhi Govt Tells DU Colleges to Not Make Any Appointments till Formation of Governing Bodies

  • The Delhi government has written to 28 Delhi University colleges partially or fully funded by it to not make any appointments till the formation of governing bodies, in what could lead to a fresh tussle between the colleges and the ruling dispensation.
  • Out of these 28 colleges under the Delhi University, 12 are fully funded by the Delhi government, with the release of funds by the latter being a bone of contention between the two parties.

Print Question Papers in Only One Language, either English or Hindi

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed school heads and exam centre superintendents to ensure the question paper for classes 10 and 12 are printed only in one language — either English or Hindi.
  • The board has stated that the question papers need not be printed in both languages for each student. Only one language, that is either English or Hindi, has to be prioritised as per what the students of a particular school or exam centre require.
  • It has come to the notice that some of the examination centres are printing both English and Hindi versions of question papers and thereafter these are being distributed to the students. This is not as per the directions supplied by the CBSE.

Harvard University Adds Caste as Protected Category for Student Workers

  • Harvard University added caste as a protected category for all graduate and undergraduate student workers.
  • The historic addition marks Harvard as the first Ivy League school to have caste equity protection in its non-discrimination clause for unionised student workers. This decision would impact more than 4,900 student workers at Harvard and the surrounding Harvard community.
  • With this addition, Harvard joins UC Davis, Colby College, Brandeis University, and several other universities where students, faculty, and staff face caste-based discrimination.

Merriam-Webster Chooses 'Vaccine' as the 2021 Word of the Year

  • With an expanded definition to reflect the times, Merriam-Webster declared an omnipresent truth as its 2021 word of the year: vaccine.
  • This was a word that was extremely high in Merriam-Webster's data every single day in 2021.
  • At Merriam-Webster, lookups for "vaccine" increased 601% over 2020, when the first U.S. shot was administered in New York in December after quick development, and months of speculation and discussion over efficacy. The world's first jab occurred earlier that month in the UK.

IIT Mandi Signs MoU with AIIMS Bilaspur for Academics and Research

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) collaborated with All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Bilaspur on Research and Academic Activities. The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at conducting joint research activities and academic exchange activities.
  • The MoU was signed in a meeting between Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Mandi; Dr Vir Singh Negi, Director, AIIMS Bilaspur, and Dr Venkata Krishnan, Dean (SRIC), IIT Mandi.
  • The meeting was also attended by Dr Vikrant Kanwar, Dy. Medical Superintendent AIIMS Bilaspur and some faculty members from IIT Mandi.
  • Under this MoU, both the institutions plan to work on joint research projects and in short-term joint academic programs in the future, providing the researchers and students an opportunity to visit and work collaboratively with the other institution.

Lt Gen Manoj Kuma Mago to Head National Defence College

  • Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Mago took over as the Commandant of National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.
  • Lt Gen Mago, who hails from Ludhiana, was commanding the 10 Corps at Bathinda before being given the assignment at NDC that entails evolving a strategic culture among the country's senior-most officials of the military, the civilian bureaucracy and the Indian Police Service. Lt Gen Mago, who passed out of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, was commissioned into 7th Battalion of the Brigade of Guards in 1984. He later commanded 16 Guards.

NCC to be Introduced as General Elective Credit Course

  • Recognizing the importance of NCC in shaping the youth of the country, University of Jammu issued a notification to incorporate NCC as a "General Elective Credit Course" under the Choice Based Credit System. This is in line with NEP 2020 from the upcoming academic session 2021-2022 of the University, with the objective of harnessing the full potential of NCC's capacity in youth development.
  • The syllabus of NCC adopted by University of Jammu for Senior Division/ Wing will be covered in 300 lectures over a three-year duration, in addition to two camps of 10 days each for becoming eligible to appear in the NCC 'B' and 'C' certificate examinations.
