UGC Reforms: Ed-tech Firms can Tie-Up with Universities to Develop E-courses

  • ED-TECH companies will soon be allowed to "collaborate" with higher education institutes offering online undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to help develop course content and carry out evaluation of students under a set of sweeping reforms planned by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said that the proposed amendments are aimed at encouraging greater flexibility for colleges and universities and harnessing the technological tools available with the fast growing ed-tech sector.
  • Through amendments in the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, universities and colleges offering online UG and PG programmes will be allowed to collaborate with ed-tech platforms towards developing course content and Financial Rules.
  • The amended draft regulations are likely to be put out in public domain for suggestions and feedback in the first week of March.

Six African countries to Receive Revolutionary mRNA Technology to Set up Vaccine Production Centr...

  • The World Health Organization has announced that six African countries will be given the revolutionary mRNA technology to set up their own vaccine production centres helping the continent acquire self-reliance against the Covid pandemic.
  • Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia will get the technology used in the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna jabs developed in Europe.
  • The Senegalese president said the aim was to have 60% of vaccines administered in Africa produced in Africa as well.
  • In the future, the new African vaccine hub might also produce jabs for diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. A ceremony marking the mRNA technology transfer will be held later in Brussels at a summit between the European Union and the African Union.

Biological E. COVID Shot Gets India Emergency Approval for 12-18 age Group

  • Indian vaccine maker Biological E. Ltd said that its COVID-19 vaccine received an emergency use approval in the country for use in children aged 12 to 18.
  • The company's shot, called Corbevax, is the third vaccine approved for use in children aged 12 and above in India, joining Zydus Cadila's DNA shot ZyCoV-D and homegrown player Bharat Biotech's Covaxin.
  • The emergency use approval for restricted use in the 12-18 age group for Corbevax is based on interim results of an ongoing mid- to late-stage clinical study.

Vyapam Renamed as Karamchari Chayan Board

  • Madhya Pradesh state cabinet renamed Professional Examination Board (PEB) (Hindi acronym Vyapam) as Karamchari Chayan Board (Employees Selection Board) nine years after multilayered Vyapam Scam was busted by state Special Task Force of police.
  • Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that the cabinet renamed PEB and now it will be under General Administration Department (GAD).
  • PEB is the sole agency for conducting recruitment exams for the appointment of class 3 employees of all the government departments.
  • Vyapam earned a bad name in 2013 after multilayered scam came to light in which students cleared various entrance and recruitment exam by using unfair means.

Model Schools in 24 Jharkhand Districts to be Ready by December 2022

  • The Jharkhand government said that it will ensure that the construction of model schools across 24 districts of Jharkhand is completed by December 2022, aiming at imparting quality education on par with public schools.
  • Work on building 325 model schools at the block level will start thereafter.
  • The state government is planning to establish three model schools per district, throughout the state.
  • These include a district school, a girls' high school and a Kasturba Vidyalaya. Once the school building is ready, the government would start providing books and other resources in accordance with patterns followed by private schools.

Education Ministry Approves RUSA Scheme to Continue Till 2026

  • The Ministry of Education approved the scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for continuation till 2026.
  • RUSA is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for funding the state government universities and colleges to achieve the aims of equity, access and excellence.
  • The proposal entails an expenditure of Rs. 12,929.16 crore out of which the central share is Rs. 8,120.97 crore and the state share is of Rs. 4,808.19 crore. It has been envisaged to support around 1,600 projects under the new phase of the scheme.
  • The new phase of RUSA targets to reach out the unserved, underserved areas, remote and rural areas, difficult geographies, aspirational districts, tier-2 cities, areas with low GER, to benefit the most disadvantaged areas and SEDGs (Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups).

IIM-Calcutta Introduces Advanced Programme in Strategic Project Management

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta launched an Advanced Programme in Strategic Project Management (APSPM) with Eruditus.
  • The APSPM Programme is a nine-month long course with the aim to equip mid and senior executives with the ability to plan and effectively manage projects in their organisation. It is scheduled to begin from April 2022.
  • This programme by IIM Calcutta has been specifically designed for senior executives looking for formal training in project and portfolio management. The programme content introduces the participants to the concepts of project and portfolio management, and the advanced tools and techniques available for implementing them in different businesses.

Ministry of Education Approved NILP Scheme for Adults

  • In a major transformation, the Central government approved the New India Literacy Programme, (NILP). It would be implemented for financial years 2022-27 and would cover all aspects of Adult Education to align with National Education Policy, NEP 2020.
  • As a major transformation, the Ministry of Education has announced to rename the term "Adult education" that is for non-literates of 15 years and above to be called as "Education for all."
  • As per the information shared by the Education Ministry, the scheme would cover non-literates of the age of 15 years and above in all state and union territories in the country. The target for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for financial years 2022-27 is 5 crore learners that is 1 crore learners per year by using "Online Teaching, Learning and Assessment System (OTLAS)."
