Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates 13th FICCI Global Skills Summit 2022

  • The 13th FICCI Global Skills Summit 2022, with the theme "Education to Employability – Making It Happen," was inaugurated and addressed by the Union Minister of Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi.
  • The subject of the 13th Global Skills Summit, 'Education to Employability – Making it Happen,' would focus on facilitating the transition from education to employability for our country's youth. After 34 years since the National Policy of Education was launched in 1986, the new National Education Policy-2020 envisions a learning ecosystem that is second to none. Our country is currently on the verge of capitalizing on the demographic dividend, disruptive technology, and a changing world of work. The Summit would look through the NEP lens and focus on how India can become the "Skill Capital of the World," using the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) as an underlying theme.

IIT Roorkee Bags Eat Right Campus Award 2022 from FSSAI

  • The high quality of food served by IIT Roorkee bagged it the Eat Right Campus award 2022 from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) which conducted a third-party audit of all 12 messes of the institute in August 2022.
  • The audit was conducted on the basis of international standards and protocols, which assessed the preparation of food, the food served, the quality and sustainability of the food, cleanliness in the mess, and the health of the mess workers.
  • The audit is done through a checklist based on five parameters. On the basis of the final audit score, the institute is certified as 'Eat Right Campus' with a five-star rating by securing 90 out of 100 marks under this rigorous quality audit.

IIM Ahmedabad, Nykaa Team up to form Research Chair in Consumer Technology

  • The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) signed an agreement with Nykaa, to set up the Nykaa Chair in Consumer Technology.
  • This partnership was established with the aim of promoting scientific practice of marketing. The focus would be on research and education that would present insights on the impact of digital, social, and mobile technologies on business models, customer behavior, and social changes at large and would facilitate incorporation of AI and machine learning insights in a disrupted marketplace.

India Achieves Significant Landmarks in Reduction of Child Mortality

  • In a significant milestone, India achieved landmark achievement in further reduction of child mortality rates.
  • As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2020 released by Registrar General of India (RGI), the country has been witnessing a progressive reduction in IMR, U5MR and NMR since 2014 towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets by 2030.
  • Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the nation on this achievement and thanked all health workers, caregivers and community members for relentlessly working towards reducing child mortality.

Himachal Pradesh Government Approves Tutor Scheme for 3 to 6 Age Group

  • The cabinet of Himachal Pradesh gave its nod to the 'Himachal Pradesh early childhood care and education tutor scheme-2022' for children in the age group of 3 to 6, in government primary schools under the National Education Policy.
  • The scheme envisages appropriate care and stimulation of the brain in early years to ensure healthy development and growth. Special attention and priority would be given to socio-economically disadvantaged districts and areas.
  • The cabinet also approved the policy to hire pre-primary teachers. The education department will frame recruitment and promotion (R&P) rules and till these are finalised, the department shall engage outsourced tutors.

IIT-Guwahati Develops Chemo Strategy for Cancer Patients that Reduces Side Effects

  • Researchers at IIT-Guwahati developed a new strategy to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs directly to the infected cells of a cancer patient, thereby significantly reducing side effects.
  • The research team was led by Prof. Debasis Manna, Department of Chemistry, IIT-Guwahati. He along with his research scholars Subhasis Dey, Anjali Patel, and Biswa Mohan Prusty, among others co-authored the paper.
  • Explaining it, professor Debasis Manna of the Department of Chemistry said the researchers had two needs in the development of chemotherapy drugs—it must be targeted at the cancer cells and must be released by an external trigger whenever it is required.
  • The molecules developed by the IIT-Guwahati researchers self-assemble as capsules to hold the drug, which then attaches only to cancer cells.

In a First, All IITs to Collaborate for a Mega R&D Event

  • In a first of its kind in India, the 23 IITs came together for a mega Research and Development (R&D) fair to be held from October 14-15, 2022 at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The fair, called IInvenTive, will showcase 75 projects to mark the 75th year of India's Independence in accordance with Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The event will be attended by Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan.
  • These 75 projects were shortlisted based on their future potential and Technology readiness level (TRL), a measure which can ascertain the commerciality of the projects.
  • The event will cover ten broad themes focussed on Defence and aerospace, Healthcare (including devices and digital health), Environment and Sustainability (including air, water, rivers), Clean Energy & Renewables (including Hydrogen and EV), Manufacturing (including smart, advanced and industry 4.0), AI/ML/Blockchain technologies (including quantum computing),Smart Cities & Infrastructure (including smart mobility),Communication Technologies (including education and 5G) ,Robotics, Sensors & Actuators and finally, Semiconductors, Flexible electronics & Nanotechnology.

Govt. Launches Indian Sign Language Mobile App 'Sign Learn' with 1,000 Words

  • The Centre launched an Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary mobile application called 'Sign Learn' containing 10,000 words.
  • The app was launched by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik.
  • Sign Learn is based on the Indian sign language dictionary of the Indian Sign Language Research And Training Centre (ISLRTC) which contains 10,000 words.
  • The app is available in Android as well as iOS versions, and all the words in the ISL dictionary can be searched through Hindi or English medium.

Nirmala Sitharaman Launch e-learning Platform Bharat Vidya

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman launched the Bharat Vidya, which is an online learning platform for Oriental and South Asian Studies. The Bharat Vidya is designed and developed by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI).
  • Bharat Vidya is a first-of-its-kind online platform, which will offer both free and paid courses covering various aspects of Indology about art, architecture, philosophy, language, and science. The Bharat Vidya will have six courses at the beginning including Veda Vidya, Bharatiya Darshanshastra, Sanskrit learning, 18 Parvas of Mahabharata, Fundamentals of Archaeology, and Kalidasa and Bhasha. BORI will collaborate with Indian and Foreign universities for awarding credits for its courses. During the inaugural event, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman announced that the courses offered complied with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

M. Srinivas Appointed Director of AIIMS-Delhi

  • The dean of Employees' State Insurance Company (ESIC) Hospital and Medical College, Hyderabad, M. Srinivas was appointed the director of New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), nearly six months after the tenure of the previous director, Randeep Guleria, formally ended. The appointment is for a period of five years.
  • Srinivas was on deputation at the ESIC Hospital and continues to be a professor of pediatric surgery at AIIMS. Including Guleria, AIIMS has had 15 directors so far since its foundation in 1956. All former directors have been employees at the institute at the time of their appointment.
  • Srinivas has been a faculty at AIIMS-Delhi in the past. He was a professor in the department of paediatric surgery at the premier institute before joining ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad in 2016.

Rajiv Bahl Appointed New Director General of ICMR

  • Rajiv Bahl was appointed as the new Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-cum-secretary of the department of health Research for a period of three years.
  • Bahl currently heads the research on maternal, newborn child and adolescent health cum-newborn unit on maternal, Department of Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing, at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva.
  • His predecessor, Balram Bhargava's extended tenure as Director General of ICMR and secretary of the Department of Health Research ended in July. Bhargava was appointed to the post in April 2018 for four years.

Maharashtra Village School Becomes a Finalist at World's Best School Prizes

  • A village school in Maharashtra was unveiled as one of the three finalists for the inaugural USD 250,000 World's Best School Prizes, launched in the UK to celebrate schools worldwide for their contribution to society's progress. The school created a cultural dynamic centred on close ties within the community.
  • PCMC English Medium School, Bopkhel, in Pune, would now progress to the public advisory vote round of the prize in the Community Collaboration category, with the winner to be awarded during World Education Week in October.
  • The school, in a remote village in Pune district, is run as a public private partnership between NGO Akanksha Foundation and local government, with most of its students from low-income families.
 

MICA Appoints Dr. Githa Heggde its New Dean

  • Ahmedabad-based institute of strategic marketing and communication, MICA, appointed Dr. Githa Heggde as its new Dean from October 17.
  • The appointment came after Dr Preeti Shroff stepped down from the post. Dr Shroff, however, would continue to serve as the senior adviser to the President and the Director of MICA.
  • Dr. Heggde has more than 30 years of experience in academic, consulting and industry. Prior to the new role, she was the Dean of School of Business at UPES and also held additional interim charges as the Dean of School of Modern Media and School of Law, Head of the Innovation Centre and its MDP initiatives. She was also part of the task force of start-up initiatives of the Uttarakhand government.
