Panel Formed for UGC, AICTE to Work Together on Higher Education Policies

  • In a development that sets the stage for establishment of the proposed Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), a committee was set up to prepare a roadmap for University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to work together as a single regulatory entity.
  • The committee, set up by UGC chairperson Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar, would initially identify areas where the two regulators can work with a common approach towards drawing up policies and regulations.
  • The development came at a time when the government is planning to introduce the Bill to set up HECI in the winter session of Parliament.
  • Members of the committee include vice-chairpersons of UGC and AICTE, as well as the UGC secretary and AICTE member-secretary.

IIT Jodhpur Launches Two New 4-year BS Programmes

  • To cater for the growing need and demand for modern technologies, the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur would launch a new engineering-linked four-year BS programme in Chemistry and Physics with specialisation.
  • The Institute has designed the new programs aligned with global needs. The programs will impart fundamental knowledge in basic science and engineering in the first year. In the second and third years, the students will undergo comprehensive theoretical and experimental courses in advanced concepts of Chemistry and Physics in the respective programmes, and in the final year, these programmes will enable the students to specialise in a focused area in the forefront of science.

India among Top 10 Countries with Highest Type 1 Diabetes: Lancet

  • According to a modelling study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal, an estimated 8.4 million people were living with Type 1 Diabetes across the globe in 2021, and India was among the top ten countries with highest prevalence of the disease.
  • This number is predicted to increase to 13.5-17.4 million people living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) by 2040.
  • The top 10 countries with the highest estimated T1D prevalence are US, India, Brazil, China, Germany, UK, Russia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Spain which account for 5.08 million (60 per cent) of global cases of T1D.

PM Narendra Modi Receives Copy of Braille Version of Assamese Dictionary Hemkosh

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a copy of the Braille version of the Assamese Dictionary 'Hemkosh' from Jayanta Baruah.
  • Hemkosh was among the earliest Assamese dictionaries dating back to the 19th century.
  • PM Modi complimented Jayanta Baruah and his team for his efforts leading to the publication of the Braille version.

A&N Becomes India's First State/UT to Achieve 100 per cent Coverage of Precautionary Dose

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands became the first Indian state/UT to achieve 100 per cent coverage of precautionary dose. More than 2,87,216 beneficiaries aged 18 were vaccinated with a precautionary dose. After July 15, the rate of vaccination saw a spike when the government decided to provide free-of-cost precautionary doses on the occasion of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

Azim Premji University Launches Open Access Digital Repository of Academic Resources in Indian La...

  • Azim Premji University (APU) unveiled an open access digital repository of academic resources translated from English to Indian languages to make them widely available to students, teachers, teacher educators, etc., across the country for free. The repository named 'Anuvada Sampada' with close to 2,000 academic resources is currently available in Hindi and Kannada.
  • Launched by APU Vice Chancellor Indu Prasad, the repository, seeks to address the paucity of high-quality academic resources in Indian languages at the graduate and post-graduate level. It includes select academic resources for postgraduate programmes in education and development, and undergraduate programmes in arts, sciences, and diploma courses.

IIT Gandhinagar Appoints Rajat Moona as New Director

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN) appointed Prof Rajat Moona as the new director of the varsity. Professor Moona is expected to take his new office within a couple of weeks. His appointment was approved by the President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of IITGN.
  • Professor Moona has been heading IIT Bhilai as Director for more than five years, prior to which he served as Director General of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). In addition to his leadership roles, Professor Moona has also been serving as a faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kanpur since 1991.

Top 10 US Universities 2022-23: Princeton, MIT top in US News and World Report Best College Ranking

  • According to the US News and World Report, Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) secured the top two positions for 2022-23, with Harvard University, Stanford University, and Yale University tied at the third position in the national university list.
  • Princeton led the national university list for the 12th straight year.
  • The University of Chicago ranked sixth, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania were tied for the seventh position. California Institute of Technology, best known for its research and engineering programmes, ranked ninth and Northwestern University and Duke University were tied for the tenth position.
  • The US News and World Report's 38th annual report ranking the best colleges in the United States assessed 1500 US institutions granting undergraduate degrees.

President Murmu Approves Appointment of New Directors at 8 IITs

  • President Droupadi Murmu approved the appointment of new directors to eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
  • Seshadri Sekhar and Shreepad Karmalkar, both professors at IIT Madras, were appointed as Directors of IIT Palakkad and IIT Bhubaneshwar, respectively.
  • While Venkayappaya R. Desai from IIT Kharagpur's Department of Civil Engineering was appointed as the Director of IIT Dhardwad, the institute's current director Pasumarthy Seshu was chosen as Director of IIT Goa. Others appointed for the top posts included – K.N. Satyanarayana (IIT Tirupati), Rajiv Prakash (IIT Bhilai), Rajat Moona (IIT Gandhinagar) and Manoj Singh Gaur (IIT Jammu).
