Google Partners with Assam Government to Power Digital Learning

  • Google partnered with Assam Government, in order to help and expedite the Assam government's objective to foster digital growth and development in the State, Google inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). As part of this new initiative, Google will work with the Assam Government's Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship Department (SEED) to strengthen school digitization efforts with digital tools and solutions to support teaching and learning, as well as to promote the fundamentals of online safety and digital citizenship to schoolchildren through the "Be Internet Awesome" programme.
  • Using the collaborative technologies of Google for Education, provide digital education to public schools. With teacher preparation and certification, Google for Education will support digital learning in schools all over Assam and work with the State to digitise education. All teachers and students in the State will have access to Google Workspace for Education – Fundamentals, the company's digital learning platform. Primary school kids can safely and independently acquire and develop their reading abilities with the help of Google's "Read Along" programme.

IIT Madras Wins National Intellectual Property Awards for 2021, 2022

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) won the 'National Intellectual Property Awards 2021 and 2022' organised by the Government of India. The varsity was identified as the top Indian academic institution for patents filing, grants and commercialisation.
  • This award is given out by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The officials decide the winner on the basis of the patent applications, grants and commercialisation.

Centre Okays Lowering Cut-off marks by 25 Percentile for Admission to 2022-23 PG Medical Courses

  • The Centre approved lowering the cut-off marks for admission to PG medical courses for 2022-23 while taking into consideration that a large number of seats had gone vacant in the PG counselling held for the last academic session.
  • The reduction in cut-off marks will be by 25 percentile across all categories.
  • The decision has been taken based on recommendations by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Hyderabad-based CCMB Part of World's Largest Genomic Study

  • The Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) became part of the world's largest and most diverse genomic study covering 54 lakh individuals. It identified 12 thousand 222 places in the human genome that are associated with human height.
  • The study by name 'A saturated map of common genetic variants associated with human height' was published in Nature science journal. Researchers from across the world, including chief scientist Dr. G. R. Chandak from CCMB, came together to form a consortium to study genetic links to human height.
  • They analysed existing genetic data of over 53 individuals drawn from various parts of the world. In the course of the genomic study, the researchers identified over 1,200 spots in the human genome that literally dictate the height of humans.

Textbooks for Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy Planned for All Major Indian Languages within Three...

  • Within the next three years, India will offer textbooks for medicine, nursing, and pharmacy in all major Indian languages, confirmed Chamu Krishna Shastry, Chairperson of the high-powered Committee for Promotion of Indian Languages under the Ministry of Education. The committee is already in talks with the National Medical Commission and other specific boards for this new initiative.
  • "We are working at being able to offer education (courses in medicine/nursing/pharmacy, etc.) in regional languages across India. The central idea being that in 10 years time, all the students will have the option, infrastructural and staff support to study these subjects in their mother tongue. This is not to say that English will be done away with. That option will also be kept available,'' he said.
  • The confirmation came days after Madhya Pradesh released textbooks in Hindi for three subjects in the MBBS course as part of a project to impart medical education in Hindi.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches NEP in Higher Education Institutes in Uttarakhand

  • Union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan along with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Higher Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat launched the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in higher education for the session 2022-23 in the state.
  • National Education Policy 2020 was framed keeping in mind all the aspects. Along with education, special attention has been paid to the skill development of children, their personality development, linguistic development and moral values.
  • The Union Education Minister said that under the National Education Policy, children are being linked to formal education for three years initially.
  • Under this (policy) Bal Vatika has been started. After learning for three years under the Bal Vatika scheme the child will enter the first class.

ICC tie-up with UNICEF to Promote Gender Equality

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) and UNICEF launched a global partnership to empower women and girls and promote inclusion and gender equality through cricket. The initiatives to drive greater gender equity along with advocacy campaigns involving some of the world`s best players will form the basis of the partnership, which aims to mobilise the "power of cricket to driving positive social change".

Education Minister Inaugurates IInvenTiv at IIT Delhi

  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated IInvenTiv, the first ever all-IIT R&D Fair at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
  • He added that IITs today have become instruments of transformation. They are repositories of knowledge and experience and a bridge to the future.
  • He added that the Covid pandemic has shown us the impact of what happens when technology driven research commits itself to the service of human race. "Whether, it is development of Indian vaccines within a short span of time, it has all been possible because of brilliant minds like yours. These are the signs of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and we have to encourage the relationship of academic R&D – new age technology - industry- society more to take research and innovation to the zenith so that no one is left behind."
  • He said that IITs have to move beyond being just engineering colleges. "We have to stop benchmarking IITs on the basis of placement packages. They should redefine parameters and benchmark on number of innovations brought in the market, innovations monetized, and number of job creators created."
  • Pradhan said that IInvenTiv would be the start of a revolution and emerge as a key forum which will provide solutions to complex global problems.
  • The R&D Fair was organized in commemoration of the 75th year of India's Independence in line with the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' initiative. It brought over 300 representatives from industry. There were 75 projects and 6 Showcase projects on diverse themes being exhibited at the event. The projects are aligned with the vision of Make in India, Digital India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

IITs Madras, Delhi, KGP on Fast-track for Overseas Expansion

  • The plan to set up Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses in Abu Dhabi, Tanzania and Malaysia was put on the fast-track with a year as the time frame envisaged.
  • IIT Madras director Prof. V. Kamakoti said that a team led by the institute's Dean of Global Engagement was entrusted with the coordination work to set up the institute's proposed campus in Tanzania which would primarily offer courses in Mining, Metallurgy and Ddata science.
  • IIT Delhi, which will have a campus in Abu Dhabi, said that teams from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were in New Delhi recently to study the model followed by IIT-D while also holding talks with teachers and students here.
  • Apart from IIT-D and IIT-M, IIT Kharagpur is going to launch a campus in Malaysia.

President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates Tripura State Judicial Academy in Agartala

  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the newly-built Tripura State Judicial Academy and unveiled the model of National Law University's Tripura campus at Narsingarh in Agartala.
  • She later visited the Central Tea Processing Factory at Durgabari Tea Estate and interacted with the tea garden workers and authorities.
  • Later President Murmu inaugurated a new MLA hostel at New Capital Complex and launched a slew of projects virtually from the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, including a few roads, some schools and student hostels.
  • Speaking at the event at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, President Murmu said that the National Law University in Tripura would be the 25th law university in the country and hoped that it would play its role as a premier legal education centre in the country.

Uzbekistan Offers 2000 Medical Seats to Ukraine-returned Indian Students

  • At the request of the Indian government, Uzbekistan's Medical Higher Educational Institutes (MHEIs) of Ministry of Health of Ukraine is providing 2000 seats to relocate Indian medical students from Ukraine by accepting the Erstwhile MCI and NMC norms (Screening test regulations 2002) and (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate – FMGL Regulations 2021).
  • The education will be offered at an affordable budget by providing a study-and-stay-at-a-place with Indian food. Uzbekistan will offer two undergraduate medical programs to Indian students: 6 years MD Diploma and 5+1 years MBBS Degree with one year Internship.
