BHU Researchers Discover a Micro RNA that can Specifically Kill Cancer Cells
BHU researchers discovered a Micro RNA that can specifically kill cancer cells and this can be developed into a harmless therapy to cure cervical cancer. The breakthrough came from a team led by Dr. Samarendra Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Biotechnology, Institute of Science.
The BHU research team was conducting a study which found that the viral E6 gene could be suppressed by a human micro-RNA - miR-34a. This killed off only cervical cancerous cells by switching off an onogenic cell cycle factor.
This finding is important as it paves the way for a therapy that will target only cervical cancerous cells – normal or non-cancerous cells did not deteriorate in any way in the study.
